Title: Lucy Post by: Evildrider on April 02, 2014, 12:48:08 PM Luc Besson brings us ScarJo as Lucy.
Trailer. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVt32qoyhi0) Looks pretty good. I'll see it. Title: Re: Lucy. Post by: HaemishM on April 02, 2014, 01:15:54 PM YES.
Title: Re: Lucy. Post by: schild on April 02, 2014, 01:23:59 PM Sweet, it's Limitless with the female version of Bradley Cooper and uh, jedi bullshit.
Title: Re: Lucy. Post by: Threash on April 02, 2014, 01:26:57 PM I was about to say Limitless and the Matrix.
Title: Re: Lucy. Post by: Nevermore on April 02, 2014, 01:29:05 PM TETSUOOOOOOOO!!
Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Raguel on April 02, 2014, 02:04:18 PM I was thinking this was about Lucille Ball (or at least the behind the scenes of "I Love Lucy"). I'm disappointed.
Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Rendakor on April 02, 2014, 03:01:04 PM My first thought was Scarlet playing that chimp that learned sign language.
Title: Re: Lucy. Post by: Ingmar on April 02, 2014, 03:09:06 PM TETSUOOOOOOOO!! Yeah this was the first thing I thought of too. Which doesn't really bode well, I pretty much hated that movie. Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Velorath on April 02, 2014, 03:43:59 PM Besson's track record has been pretty has been pretty spotty the last 10-15 years or so.

Which doesn't really bode well, I pretty much hated that movie. I liked the soundtrack! Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Nevermore on April 02, 2014, 06:17:46 PM It's a good soundtrack. I was just listening to Kaneda's Theme the other night for some reason. Maybe that's why my mind went so quickly to Akira when I saw that trailer.
Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Viin on April 02, 2014, 07:06:58 PM Is this based on a book or just random stuff thrown into a movie?
Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Pennilenko on April 02, 2014, 07:47:16 PM I will like it, but I don't think about movies like this too deeply.
Title: Re: Lucy Post by: MediumHigh on April 03, 2014, 07:20:30 AM So I'm watching this with my gf and we go
"Is that what I think it is.." "She is basically a smart phone" "Yep glad you was thinking that too" I think I'll pass. Title: Re: Lucy Post by: shiznitz on April 03, 2014, 07:34:58 AM Is this based on a book or just random stuff thrown into a movie? Wondering the same thing. Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Khaldun on April 03, 2014, 07:37:57 AM Looks good on the whole, but jesus wept I wish that "Humans only use 10 % of their brain" thing would go away. It's a dumb old trope and wildly, insanely incorrect.

Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Nebu on April 03, 2014, 08:25:02 AM You mean it's a movie with a bunch of explody bullshit non-science? That's novel. :why_so_serious:
Hell, 100 minutes of ScarJo is almost worth the price of admission on its own. It's a dumb old trope and wildly, insanely incorrect. I believe it's that conscious thought takes up 10% but the other 90% is used too, just by shit like, breathing. That's also wrong--for one, it's not as simple as "conscious" and "autonomic", but even stuff that's conscious by a pretty precise definition can light up a whole bunch of the brain. Doesn't really matter, it's just that I'd love someone to come up with some nice shiny new 21st Century tropes for "I can haz superpowers" besides "I use 90% of my brain" and "I fell into radioactive water". Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Bunk on April 03, 2014, 02:20:22 PM I've always loved Beson's action schlock, even the shitty ones like Crank 2, so I'll be all over this.

Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Lakov_Sanite on April 05, 2014, 12:39:56 PM It's looking a bit too much like transcendence except with a female lead. It could be a better movie but two of these coming out in a relatively short time frame can't be a good thing for the second one released. That and there are only a couple ways "rapid human evolution" can turn out. One they ascend to a sort of godhood and leave humanity to it's petty squabbles, leaving us with an important lesson or someshit. Two is flowers for algernon where they return to their original state and the third is that mankind is not prepared for such wonder and destroys it before it can fully mature, thus proving we are small minded animals still.
It's just a plot that seems to have been done so many times it's no longer interesting or novel. Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Father mike on April 05, 2014, 02:23:31 PM To me, Transcendent looks like an update of Lawnmower Man, and Lucy looks (as noted) Akira-ish ... kinda. This is one of those false equivalents, like saying Bagger Vance got overlooked because it came out at the same time as Green Mile, and there were too many "magic black man" movies. Bagger Vance was overlooked because it had a weak story.
Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Venkman on April 05, 2014, 04:07:47 PM Looks awesome. Like some others, I'm wondering if this based on some source material, or new. Don't care since I'll see it either way, just curious.
Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Tannhauser on April 06, 2014, 04:09:00 PM I'm actually interested in this. Might be another superhero movie, but preview looks great.
Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Maven on April 07, 2014, 05:04:03 PM It looks interesting, but once I got over my initial reaction that this wasn't Under The Skin (I honestly this was the one where she was an alien), I started making Limitless comparisons. It looks like it was created as a competitor to Transcendence. Limitless is one of my, if not my most, favorite films.
Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Soulflame on April 07, 2014, 06:36:10 PM Transcendence looks like Lawnmower Man with Johnny Depp. Not really a compelling setup for a movie.
Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Venkman on April 08, 2014, 07:04:35 PM I think it's interesting some of you channel Transcendence. I didn't get that vibe at all. I got more of a mix between Phenomenon (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117333/) and The Matrix.
Transcendence really feels more like Skynet in that short period between activation and the anthropromorphic robots showing up. Title: Re: Lucy Post by: SurfD on July 24, 2014, 11:09:01 PM So, yeah. Lucy.
Avoid avoid avoid avoid avoid. Holy helll that was bad. Story seemed to have almost no real direction, kind of just wobbling all over the place. Direction was bad. Very bad. Like, the film starts off with these artsy cuts to reinforcive imagery spliced into the narritive, and then the director just completely drops that gimmic and never touches it again for the rest of the film. There is a very small bit where you think the film is trying to channel Limitless with a bit more of a leaning to soft sci-fi abilities other then just "I am really fucking smart" (like telekenesis / telepathy etc), but then it just takes a nosedive off into super hardcore meta-physic stuff. The science of it (what little there is) will go completely over almost everybody's heads, and the Sci-Fi elements just never seem relateable (The Matrix was easy to relate to, this movie is just a giant mass of jumbled confusion). Sooo many problems with this thing I really dont know where to begin. Part of it, at least for me as a fan of Sci-Fi and this kind of shit, is that the last half of the movie would never have happened the way it did if she had powers even remotely close to what she was displaying near the middle. They had a nice premice, and the opening act started somewhat ok (other then one really stupid and out of place scene), but by the middle of the movie, you could tell they had no real idea where this thing was going, and the end was just a colossal clusterfuck that is guaranteed to leave a bad taste in the mouth of 90% of the joe public type people who are going to go to watch the movie expecting some kind of Limitless / Matrix hybrid. If you have the chance to see this thing for free, do something more productive with your time, like watch grass grow.... Edit: For those makeing the Transcendence comparison, this movie is nowhere near that deep. Like, not even a scratch in the dirt with a spoon deep in comparison. Warning: Major Spoiler Alert!! Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Merusk on July 25, 2014, 10:30:21 AM That explains the Reddit headline about this being the dumbest movie about brain use ever. Glad I spent this week's movie money going to Monty Python instead.
Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Tale on August 10, 2014, 06:48:12 PM I went to see this and I kind of enjoyed it. It's a new Luc Besson movie, so it has Nikita-style quirky violence and a Fifth Element-style dumb story, but I like his better stuff (The Big Blue, Nikita, Jeanne d'Arc, etc) so even though it's bad, I enjoyed Besson filming Scarlett Johansson. Plus there's a cameo from an actor from the amazing Danish series Borgen at the start.
I can sum up the dumbness faster though: Title: Re: Lucy Post by: MrHat on August 11, 2014, 09:22:26 AM Quote I can sum up the dumbness faster though: Dead on. That being said, I really did enjoy it. Wish there was a bit more of it at like 80 mins, but its fun. Title: Re: Lucy Post by: Bunk on November 24, 2014, 07:53:39 AM Yea, just watched this. Pretty much agree with the reviews above - the story is just plain dumb. Nothing makes sense, it doesn't even stay consistent within itself in what powers she has. That being said, and note I am a major Besson fanboi so feel free to take with a grain of salt - I enjoyed it.
Some cool graphics and effects, a cool villain from Old Boy, a quality over the top Besson car chase scene (for no logical reason at all), and some creative use of footage of animals fucking. Plus Scarlet Johannson. And yes, there's definitely some stuff that makes one think of Akira. Title: Re: Lucy Post by: satael on November 24, 2014, 09:40:24 AM It was bad but the beginning until the scene with Morgan Freeman was the good kind (Nikita, Leon etc.) of Besson.
