Title: The Age of FRAPS
Post by: schild on March 16, 2014, 12:16:11 PM
Is it over? What's the new hotness for screengrabs? Thanks.

Most of the streamers/casters I follow seem to use Xsplit (https://www.xsplit.com/). I can't comment on how good it is since I haven't ever used it myself.

Xsplit can do local recording, but it can take a lot of twiddling knobs in the features to get real high quality video.  It can be done.  But I don't know beyond that.

I'm mostly sticking with low/no budget stuff.  For streaming, Open Broadcaster Software seems to be popular.  It can stream games as well as record them and it's free.

I grabbed liteCam off of Steam just for convenience, and it seems to work fine.  It's designed specifically record Steam games and seems to do that well (for me, at least, the forums are full of wailing).  Doesn't do streaming, though.

Launch whatever game (Hex, I'm guessing?) through steam and mash F12 to your heart's content?

 :headscratch:

I'm confused by this thread. FRAPS still works just fine and dandy for screenshots, like it has for years. I still use it all the time.

I use Lightscreen (http://lightscreen.sourceforge.net/) for the rare occasions where I need to take screenshots of stuff. Not sure if it's better than FRAPS though... probably not.

I'm confused by this thread. All the games that I play have a screenshot key. For those that don't, my PRT SCRN key continues to function.

I've gotten my answer pretty clearly which is, "keep using FRAPS." As such, I'll do that.

FRAPS hasn't been updated in a year but it still works fine.

GameClaw, DXtory, and some other tools are what some people have switched over to but they aren't really all that different from FRAPS.

If you have the dropbox client installed & running, hitting Print Screen (or alt+print scn for window) will save a screen shot to your dropbox screenshots directly.  Hit ctrl while you do this also copies the dropbox public link to your clipboard.

That's what I use, saves me the trouble of uploading them afterwards anyways.

Just went to test this and realized I couldn't do so at work because I have snagit installed. derp.

But cool if it works.
