Title: 2014 Resolutions
Post by: Paelos on December 31, 2013, 06:28:00 AM
Can be gaming, can be life, what it can't be is getting in shape because it's obvious at this point.

Mine is to spend more on gaming in 2014. I was very tight on purchases this year because I didn't really like much, but with the new computer, it's time to expand.

I'm tired of people saying "what?" to me all the time so I resolve not to ramble on and on and on until I lose my train of thought and become twitchy and confused and end up sounding like a bloody mental patient what has no gorm.

Going to make an attempt to actually get up in the morning and go exercise before work, at least a few times a week. Gained a bunch of weight when I got back from Benin and now I'm at my heaviest, so some of my pants are a noticeably tight fit. Went and bought jeans yesterday and had to up the waist size for the first time...ever.

Welcome to middle-age, good luck in your battle against entropy.  I'm resolving not to act my age.

Finish painting this house.
Do something with the arduino gear I've picked up from various kickstarters.
Paint at least more than one Bones mini before my Bones 2 shipment arrives.

Funny, I'm resolving to do the opposite.  Some of the time.

Game less, read more. Seriously.

I used to read a hundred books a year. These days I'm lucky to finish one.

I'm resolving not to act my age.

Funny, I'm resolving to do the opposite.  Some of the time.
I'm with Phildo on this one (mostly). I embrace aging gracefully and living each phase of your life appropriately. This is why my 20s were such a wonderful mess.

But I still ride the shopping cart in the parking lot. Fun, it's faster and it brings a smile to people to see a guy in a suit doing it.

And with Storm, game less. Paint more. I did game a lot less in 2013 and painted a lot more, won a couple contests, so going good on that front. Everyone here with minis I want to see submitting things this year!

Hike more.
Work on my basement now that it's dry.
Win a Sophie (though my chance is very slim!).
Improve my painting in general.
Record my damned CD finally.

Shit, there are too many resolutions in my case this year since last year I completely flipped my life upside-down.  For me, becoming dangerous enough in systems engineering to do some entrepreneurial damage is my main goal; but godammit, it's hard and my mind isnt what it was in my 20's... which leads to my next resolution, which is to focus much more on mind-body-soul rejuvenation.  I'm full of useful info. to maximize the cortex, but I have yet to use it; this needs to change.

I'm with Mahrin.  I've been called a big kid most of my life.  Kids love me (I'm the fav. uncle).  Most people think I'm still in my early 20's.  Physically and creatively I am.  My resolution in this case is to tell the stinkface (women and those married-people typically) asstards that insist I "grow up" to go fuck themselves.

Appropriate segue: Gaming-wise my resolution is to pwn the hell out of Wildstar when it releases.  Originally I was going to re-establish my guild, but that's non-realistic.  Just will have to find a good one, ideally bringing the old-hats from vanilla-WoW back into the fray (I miss those guys/gals).

Other things; I need to learn to freehand draw, spend more time w/CAD, become a pythonista, design a boardgame, start another business, fix my dad's business, engage in a good bachelor's degree program, and populate my lab with more equipment.   :why_so_serious:

Not as much resolutions as specific goals for things I want to do in the coming year (yes, I know that is what resolutions are to most people but these are things I decided I wanted to do a while back):

Pay off my Credit Card debt.
Run a 10k.
Bike a century.

I want to make it through a tax season without neglecting all my relationships.
Also I want to decide in 2014 if this is going to be my career for the next five years.

I resolve to:

1.  Drink no booze
2.  Eat a very low carb diet
3.  Get to 175 pounds
4.  Read to the kids every night a kids book, not the typical Hobbit type book I read them for night time
5.  Limit computer/internet to 30 minutes per day

Addendum-  6.  To fuck with Paelos as much as humanly possible about Mark Richt

Finish degree, get a stable enough job to be able to afford a more permanent place to live.  Try to do more drawing.  Exercise more.  Try to learn to cook more than just spaghetti and rice.

Gaming wise, I hope I'll finally be able to replace this laptop, but financially, who knows.  Getting an XBox style controller would be good, too, for those games that require it.  I keep meaning to do a radicalthon or walkthrough or review series or something but I never get around to it, so maybe I'll finally move on that.

I'm going to try and be less of a crank this year, people being stupid has gotten me to the point where I blow up and yell more than I should.

Find a job that challenges me and gives me something to look forward to (we'll see...)

Losing weight is obviously a given, but mine is more endocrine related now and I've just got to make major changes and stop screwing up my knee\back to keep my regimen going so I wouldn't call it a resolution.

As far as gaming goes... I haven't really liked anything that has come out in a long time so I'm afraid my days of playing games are over besides my nostalgia trips I take periodically.

1)  Replace this house with an even better one that has one or two minor projects for me to dink around with.  (We close on this one on the 15th, move in to an apt. on the 8th)

2) Establish a paint/ hobby area in said new house for the minis sitting in my closet.

3) Get back to the gym.  Career transition and the insane workload of the prior position made that hell this year. I'm breathing heavy going up 2 flights of stairs again.

4) Compute less, read/ hobby more.

5) Continue to work on learning guitar.  Maybe take a pro lesson on top of the self-teaching stuff.

2.  Lose weight and exercise more in a slow careful way.
3.  Be more tolerant of my Tea Party co-workers.
4.  Say 'No' more often.
5.  Rent my house out so I can move back to civilization.  Tired of hearing cows make sweet midnight love.

Ski. I dropped 90lbs to my ideal weight (first time in 20 years) and still discovering what it's like to be physically active again. Skiing is next on my how-far-can-I-push-this-shit list.

Martial Arts. Comes after skiing. Something I've never lived anywhere long enough to get serious about and there's a great dojo with multiple styles being taught that I literally pass to and from work. No more excuses.

Get my grass to grow. I suck at it. For all the landscaping equipment I've inherited from folks and inlaws downsizing, I owe it to them toi not pay someone else to do it for me. I need to learn this shit.

I have two. The second rather depends on the first.

1. Find a career I actually care about.
2. Get married.

Protip: don't corrolate those. Your spouse is someone who's gonna be through all your careers ideally, picking up the slack when you're between, providing your inspiration during, and evolving alongside you when you change them. You can (and I personally think should) have multiple careers in your life. Multiple spouses though, that gets expensive

Welcome to middle-age, good luck in your battle against entropy.  I'm resolving not to act my age.

I've lost like 30+ pounds in the last year or so. I haven't been this light since before college. My goal is actually to gain about 10 pounds. Previous to that I had put on about 20 pounds, so I lost all that then another 10.

Edit: The jeans that I'm wearing now at one point I couldn't fit into without really squeezing, and I couldn't put my wallet or keys in my pockets without struggling. Now they are falling off and I had to poke a hole in my belt past the furthest hole. At the airport when I had to take my belt off my pants and my underwear started to fall off.

1. Finish More and Worry Less
2. 1 full marathon and 2 half's (finished 1 in 2013)

1. Find a career I actually care about.

This.  It's a challenging one.  No comment on the getting married, except find a partner who can independently support themselves.

And Ghost, are you emigrating or going back to school?  Good luck everyone in 2014.

I made two this year: find a family doctor and get my eyes checked/glasses updated (its been four or five years).

Already did number two. Yay getting old! Went from a simple prescription in just one eye for my astigmatism, to full on progressives. I'm sure glad those Boxing Week sales brought them down to just $484.00.

Sigh.

I am looking forward to being able to see again though. It was looking at the detail on a mini recently that made me realize just how much up close vision I'd lost in the last couple years.

As Ing points out, the missus and I have been together for 9.5 years. It's mostly the wedding part. And yes, we know about Vegas and Courthouses, we want a party.

As for the career, I have a couple things in mind with a hopeful look towards the craft beer industry in some capacity. Still, going back to school is likely to have something to fall back on.

it's also very likely that we move in the calendar 2014 year.

That works well for actual distance, but I generally just google maps for distance and log it that way.

I've kinda gone full reductionist on tracking. To be honest, I find most apps and tech devices to be fine momentarily, but not good for the long haul. Either they get bought out, crash, something goes wonky at the wrong time during a data sync event, whatever. Things go quirky and you generally don't have a clean way to override the automated data.

So instead, I rely mostly on a simple Notes app to track everything I eat and whatever exercise I did that day (treadmill lately, but sometimes my bike set up on a stationary rig, road jogging or actual biking). I don't even use Evernote anymore. I'll use a Note app and then transpose it to my Google Spreadsheet each week. Nothing fancy. On purpose.

Runkeeper does more than just tracks distance. I am confused as to what you are looking for in a "fitness or walking app" as pretty much all of them are similar.

I have a Fitbit  (http://www.fitbit.com/)that I wear to track steps + activity + sleeping pattern. Seems to work well, but doesn't capture distance via GPS (if that's what you are looking for) - it does calculate a distance by stride length and does an approximate calorie burn based on activity. It can be synced with other apps for tracking calorie intake too (such as My Fitness Pal).

I was exhausted at number three.  I can help you with number nine, though.  I am the anti-collector.  I hate collecting things.  Especially things that get dusty.  If I see something lying around for too long, I want to throw it out.  In fact, I'm in the process of making a Good Will box of clothing I haven't worn for more than a couple of years.  What you do is hire some thug to rob your house when you're not there and take all the crap you've collected.  Then you have a clean house and get some  insurance money which will help you with number five.

I thought that up myself.

And my resolution has folded.  Finally saw the waitress I had my eye on again, even got seated in her section, but she was sporting a lovely engagement ring this time.  Ce la vie.

Bah, that sucks.

Mine is still alive, I'm spending more on gaming with my winter purchases. I have to have stuff in tax season to keep me sane.

I just really need to get myself to exercise more during the week, but I'm just so tired...I can literally hit that snooze button repeatedly for about 2 hours each day before dragging (DRAGGING) myself out of bed.

Really need to get the weight back down - coming back from Benin, and then more or less gorging my way through the end of 2013 was not helpful.

I've been doing 30m on the bike every day for the last 2 weeks for at least 5 miles a day.

It's done wonders for my energy. It SUUUUUUUCKED getting started, but if you go slow and get used to doing it, even on days when you feel like garbage, you realize how much better you feel afterwards.

Seriously, I've biked on days where I thought I'd pass out if I did anything, and you know what? You don't.

That just means there's still time to change her mind :awesome_for_real:

1. Get Promoted.
2. Move closer to work.
3. Get enough in the bank to pay off my student loans, then do so.

Kind of had a real introspective night last night. Doubling down on guitar playing this year, need to break a personal wall or two that I've been to lazy to knock down.

1. Learn proper theory, hell or high water. It's really holding me back from being scary good.
2. Build out my repertoire. Tired of only having two or three songs memorized.
3. At least an hour a day practicing.

Let me know if you have any questions related to #1, I might as well use this degree for *something*.
