Title: Crowdsourced Big Brother
Post by: MahrinSkel on July 28, 2013, 01:30:24 PM
This is simultaneously cool, and deeply disturbing (http://www.thetileapp.com/).  Essentially, it's a little Bluetooth widget that you can attach to anything, and your phone will tell you where it is, or where it last detected it if it is out of range.  Very cool.

The disturbing part?  It will do the same if any Tile user brings their phone within range.  So, you want to know where your girlfriend is going but you don't want to shell out hundreds of dollars for a GPS/Cellular tracking device, or that's too big and noticeable?  Just tuck one of these $25 units into the corner of her purse, and you're golden.

Then again imagine how much less of a pain the Clinton presidency would have been if Hillary could have tagged Clinton and all his interns.

I don't think she would have found out much by knowing that interns who were supposed to be in the White House were nearby.  Not that I think any of that ever came as a surprise to her anyway.

It seems like this relies on all the users having their bluetooth on all the time, which seems unrealistic. I can see the potential use for this for finding your keys or something in your house, but out and about in the wider world, how often does anyone keep their bluetooth on unless they need it? I prefer having battery life personally.

Your mental model of users is very different from most actual users.   :awesome_for_real:  The average user doesn't even know there's an option to turn Bluetooth off.

I think to most people "bluetooth" means exactly those headset things.

I keep bluetooth on on my iphone because I hate fumbling through to disable it every time. iOS7 makes it much easier to toggle off. Then again, I use bluetooth to connect to the car's radio.

I don't think I've ever owned a phone where it was on by default.
