After growing up in California I will say 4th of July in Texas rocks.

Yup. The other 364 days of the year we want to be our own country.

Grilled a couple of steaks on my balcony in defiance of my condo board, had a couple of ears of locally sourced corn and washed it all down with a nice Napa cab.

Fuck. Yeah.

I stayed in my room all day.

Now I'm going to play Saints Row III.

Made detroit style pizza with the fiancee and marathonned the first season of Rome, which she hadnt seen. Good 4th.

What is Detroit Style pizza?

Inch thick crust. 65-75% water content. Toppings below cheese. Cheese is 50/50 cheddar and mozz. Sauce above cheese. Cheese has total coveragee to every edge and corner. 15-18 minutes at 475f. Inch deep 10x14 seasoned steel pan.

Edit: Authentic Buddy's pizza uses Wisconsin Brick Cheese which I can't buy here.

Fixes the  "a ahh, I scalded my mouth" problem though.  I'll have to give that a shot sometime.

We drove down to mammoth cave, because why not.  Sitting in the hotel room tired as fuck because the bed is too soft to sleep on.

Worked at the offical 4th of July party at the ambassadors house in Warsaw.  Got to pretend I was cool by drinking with their foreign minister and several ambassadors.  Was more excited by the fact that I got the number of one of the cute Starbucks girls catering the event.   :awesome_for_real:

Long day though, so glad its all over.  Got stuck on the planning committee for it as one of those things they make new hires do, and had to suffer through months of meetinsg and planning.

It's like a regular pizza, but on fire.

My buddy came in from Chicago for the 4th. So we did the American thing of going to a baseball game and eating fried food then getting blasted while watching the fireworks off in the distance.

It keeps the sauce from making the thick crust soggy. Same principle as Chicago deep dish pizza which also has the sauce above the cheese.

Did some writing early in the day, went grocery shopping because fuck it, at least I don't have to do it tonight and then settled in to watch the Cubs lose a pitcher's duel because of a passed ball. Fuck you, Cubs. Fuck you, Theo Epstein. Then won a game of LOL and played Football Manager until it was time to go to sleep. It was a good day.

Then I had to come to work today. Fuck you, Friday where half the office and 3/4 of the clients aren't working.

The cheese being directly around the edge of the crust is how Detroit pizza gets a flavor Chicago can't even touch.

Bann, I've heard Buddy's has gone downhill a bit. Apparently they use conveyer ovens at a number of their locations now. I haven't been to confirm/deny yet.

Had a great dad moment.  I lit a blossom, threw it onto the pavement, and turned to look at my 3 year old son's reaction.  This was his first experience with fireworks of any kind.  His body was all scrunched up, fists held tightly next to his head in anticipation, eyes wide, mouth pursed.  Then it goes off, and a huge smile breaks open on his face.  When it stops, he breathes, 'that was aaaaawesoooome!'

Yeah, what the shit is that about? They've always given us a long weekend here in the past, but not this year. Totally came out of nowhere too, until the beginning of this week I thought I was off today.

We had to work today too, but we have production issues and a big workload. It's okay though, because it wouldn't have been a paid day off if we had gotten it off. :(

Sadly, production issues/big workload do not mean we have a bunch of orders... most of the workload/production issues are our own fault.

All that crap, matched up with slacking workers and a killer hangover this morning really make me thing this Friday can go fuck itself.


My Fourth, spent with some good friends, involved playing Legendary (Marvel Deckbuilding Game), drinking some REALLY GOOD BEER (Kern River Coffee Stout, Brouwerij West's "Dog Ate My Homework", HaandBrygeriet's "Sur Megge" and some others), setting off some fireworks, eating some steak, and helping make sure my fiancee didn't give herself a conclusion concussion after hitting herself with a lead pipe in the forehead.

Edit: Did mention I had a hangover?

We had to work it, too. And the boss out on vacation. We can't really slack as the public is here and still has needs...

The assistant director is in and not happy to be here, so I pitched the idea of closing on friday for thursday holidays...we used to be mostly salaried so it didn't matter, monetarily. But now we're mostly part-time so it would actually save a chunk of change.

Enjoy it man. My boy turned 4 in May, and I can remember last year him running around yelling how "Byootiful" every firework was. This year he just wanted to stab people with sparklers.

Went to my parent's place, most of my extended family came, along with several family friends, neighbors, and people we didn't even know before the night was out. Had a fish fry since most of my family fishes; Crappie, Catfish, Bluegill.

I didn't drink since I had to work today (I'm still here, literally ignoring all my items out of spite), but it was drunken row. One of my uncles is a multimillionaire and brought hundreds of dollars in high end fireworks which my older brother (visiting from Maryland) and some of my other cousins spent an hour setting off in massive batches when they weren't drinking whiskey and moonshine. Was a good night outside of nearly being carried off by mosquitoes.

Still here at work myself, when most of the office is out.  The boss came in though, but he's gone now that it's past 3pm.  I just got to spend 2.5 hours working with the financial analyst for our group (I actually do most of the paperwork, he's just the employee) and trying to understand why he's doing accruals for some items.  "Well, because" seemed to be the most common answer.   :uhrr:  Especially when I pointed out that he'd been doing accruals for something that we are invoiced internally for monthly, in the same month the work is done. Oh, and all the leftover accruals from last year are finally gone now (he figured out they'd been paid) and there are a bunch that he doesn't know if they've been paid/should be dropped or not.

I told my boss he owes me a bottle of Moscato after these past two days (Wednesday and today) of dealing with this.

People were shooting fireworks starting at 10AM yesterday until well past midnight.  Not the small variety, professional variety from at least 4-5 different houses in the neighborhood (and in the middle of the street).  Then I had to come to work this morning since our users were actually running during the holiday.  It was nice to have a quiet day at work vs. craziness with everyone on site.

Anyone else watch the Capitol 4th show?  I got chills a few times, but when John Williams conducted that rendition of his Lincoln piece I was seriously moved.

I had off the 4th (and 5th!) for the first time since graduating HS, which was nice. Friday was up in the air until Wednesday afternoon when the boss decided he wanted the day off, so all jobs got pushed to Monday. :drill:

Went down to my parent's mom's river house.  Met the neighbors.  Drank.  (TGI Friday's Orange Dream is awesome.)  Watched a gorgeous sunset and sunrise.

Pretty much settled on it being time to get the fuck out of the big city.

I've been off work since Wednesday. It then proceeded to do nothing but dump rain on Georgia for the entire weekend.

It was a shitty 4th, despite people trying to put a smiley face on it. Most fireworks got cancelled, most of the weekend was indoors. The highlight was the show went on with the food, so we had pork tenderloin and did ribs on the pit, rain or not.

Either you were feeding a ton of people or the perspective on that photo is all weird.

We marinated them in a deer cooler.

Speedboat racing off the north coast of Majorca followed by hanging out in a garden party, eating local chorizo off a barbeque and picking oranges off the tree overhead to squeeze into my glass of vodka. Best screwdriver I've ever had.

Wasn't even for the 4th, but there were enough Americans around to pretend.
