Title: Hemlock Grove Post by: Bunk on April 24, 2013, 09:35:46 AM New Netflix show, whole first season popped up a few days ago. All I knew going in was that it was "horror" in genre, so I didn't know what to expect.
Basically, it's broody Gypsy lad and his mom move in to old Uncle's trailer in small town Directed by by Eli Roth, which scared me because I hate some of the torture porn shit he puts out, but this show doesn't seem to be going there - its more traditional Gothic horror. First little bit has some characters that made me think it might be a Twilight rip-off, but it never actually goes there. Alex Skarsgard's little brother might need a few more acting lessons. Boobs, some gore (not excessive), creepy makeup, and generally some good special effects. Famke Jansen is still crazy hot even at nearly 50. I'm three episodes in and still intrigued. Takes a bit of a right turn in episode two that caught me by surprise. Title: Re: Hemlock Grove Post by: satael on April 24, 2013, 10:40:06 AM The show had some good moments and the fact it was on Netflix meant that there was no need to censor it too much. My biggest gripe with the show turned out to be the last episode which was more about trying to justify a second season than wrapping up the story properly. All in all a mediocre show (but one I actually watched all episodes for)
Title: Re: Hemlock Grove Post by: dd0029 on April 24, 2013, 10:44:01 AM I'm three episodes in and still I can't decide about it. The tonal shifts are really strange and jarring. One minute it's grim noir, the next it's a CW teen drama. Then there's the really odd relationships from :awesome_for_real: to :pedobear: to :ye_gods: to :drill: to :why_so_serious:.
It is fun to see the Battlestar b-team actors show up. There are enough bits and pieces to keep my interest, but good lord those tone shifts. Among the great number of wtf moments in the show, one of the best so far is when gypsy werewolf is told he's rather hirsute, then define the word. All the while he's standing there shirtless with his four chest hairs. Title: Re: Hemlock Grove Post by: Signe on April 27, 2013, 09:53:46 AM I agree with dd0029. I don't know how long I'll bother with this show if they go down the usual CW teenie route. I'm so tired of high school kids. Couldn't they at least make them 20 or 30 something? Oh well. The wolf transformation was pretty good except it was a bit too long and only his tummy is slightly hirsute. The teen drama stuff totally turns me off.
Title: Re: Hemlock Grove Post by: Signe on April 28, 2013, 09:59:45 AM This show stinks at the moment. It got a little Twin Peak-ish but they can't seem to keep it up. I've only seen a few episodes and one of them out of order, and my take is: The Swede boy is secretly in love with the Gypsy boy, I want a Jag roadster from the 50s or 60s... not sure which, and this has GOT to get better because I adore Lili Taylor and the giant Swede boy is Eric from True Blood's brother? You wouldn't know it. Eric from True Blood is MUCH better at hiding his accent. His dad is an actor I like too but not in the same pervy way I like Eric. Wait. I wandered, didn't I? I like the atmosphere and sets, and the look of the supernatural bits... like the werewolf change. If they tried to concentrate a little more on the plot, they could make it a Twin Peaks sort of series. I'd like that.

Title: Re: Hemlock Grove Post by: Hayduke on May 03, 2013, 03:13:30 PM This show is intoxicatingly stupid. It's like an homage to pop culture from the minds of aliens millions of light years away.
Title: Re: Hemlock Grove Post by: Bunk on May 06, 2013, 09:43:30 PM And now that I'm done watching the series, I feel kind of bad for bringing it up. It takes a right hand turn in to fucked-up-ville about half way through.
