Just cought this on the trailers with Oblivion on the sneak peak early show at my theatre. Totally pulling a MiB vibe from this in a big way. Looks fun as hell too, which is a big plus. Title: Re: R.I.P.D, the spiritual successor to men in black? Post by: Evildrider on April 18, 2013, 10:45:58 PM Jeff Bridges + Ryan Reynolds = win. Looks great, kind of like Hellboy and MiB smashed together.
Oh and Mary-Louise Parker is still hot. Title: Re: R.I.P.D, the spiritual successor to men in black? Post by: Ironwood on April 19, 2013, 01:50:41 AM Um, yeah. This looks like a remake for Christs sake.
Title: Re: R.I.P.D, the spiritual successor to men in black? Post by: K9 on April 19, 2013, 02:06:05 AM I'm pretty sure they're even using the same set for the HQ as MiB. Still looks like good fun though.
Title: Re: R.I.P.D, the spiritual successor to men in black? Post by: schild on April 19, 2013, 02:09:42 AM The way things fleshthings blow up is like the median between hellnoy and mib also.
Whatever, James Hong. Day 1. Title: Re: R.I.P.D, the spiritual successor to men in black? Post by: HaemishM on April 19, 2013, 08:10:23 AM Yeah, I'm all over this. Trailer made me laugh a number of times. Total popcorn fun fest.
Title: Re: R.I.P.D, the spiritual successor to men in black? Post by: Hammond on April 19, 2013, 10:03:34 AM Nice I thought this one looked familiar. Its based of a comic from 2003 which was pretty damn good. Definitely going to be a day 1 for me.

Unless they're going to rip-off the neuralizer as well. Title: Re: R.I.P.D, the spiritual successor to men in black? Post by: HaemishM on April 19, 2013, 11:16:26 AM God did it? :why_so_serious:

Title: Re: R.I.P.D, the spiritual successor to men in black? Post by: Merusk on July 21, 2013, 06:45:02 PM So based on the box office, I'm guessing nobody saw this, eh?
Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: SurfD on July 21, 2013, 09:31:57 PM I managed to catch abot 60% of it in small chunks while checking theatres at work over the weekend. It is OK. Not great, but probably worth a rental / discount matinee day viewing. Definately leaning more towards Wild Wild West instead of MIB 1. Just seemed like it was trying too hard. Honestly, I dont think any movie of the same formula is going to match up with MiB, which pretty much had perfect chemistry between Tommy and Will as the leading actors.
And from what I saw, they never did explain how they cover up an exposure (which is kind of a major event in the movie, considering they have scores of deados roaming the streets and wreck half a city by the end of the movie.) Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Abagadro on July 22, 2013, 12:10:32 AM D'Nofirio is actually the MiB,

I have seen a grand total of zero promotion for this film so far. EDIT: UK release date isn't for another month :uhrr: Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Ironwood on July 22, 2013, 05:33:07 AM Ditto.
Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Merusk on July 22, 2013, 08:50:13 AM Yeah came out this weekend in the US. Was hyped to hell-and-back, with ads on every channel and they got Adult Swim to do some tags between shows.
Didn't help it. Opened 3.2 million below Pacific Rim's 2nd week, with a dismal 12.7mil, 7th for the week. (Though, opening the same week as RED2 has to have hurt them both. RED opened in 5th place with only 18.5 mil) I'm amazed the Conjuring did as well as it did. But then I'm not a fan of Horror so that's personal bias. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. There's been quite some good horror coming out the last few years. The only reason RED2 hurt RIPD is because RIPD is apparently terrible. And I don't know if I would say RIPD was "hyped to hell and back". Ads are common place for any movie, especially at that budget. Beyond that, there was no tie ins with any products that I saw. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Ironwood on July 22, 2013, 08:59:43 AM Over here, we ain't heard SHIT about this one. I mean, not a fucking peep.
Conjuring, however, is getting rave reviews all over the shop. It's also been quite heavily advertised. Edit : And Rubik said that too. Cool. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Merusk on July 22, 2013, 09:09:43 AM Ads are normal, but I saw one every half hour during my Thursday/ Friday TV watching and, as I said, there were evidently tie-ins with male-centric places like Adult Swim.
Yeah the reviews are saying yawner so I'm glad I didn't go see it. Particularly as SurfD indicates they never answered my question - why do people not ask wtf is going on as women are hit by busses and cars go tumbling about. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Yes, they concentrating their efforts in the one place they knew they could get some headway. That does not translate to "hyped to hell and back" to me. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: MahrinSkel on July 22, 2013, 01:31:52 PM Ryan Reynolds poisons everything he touches and while I love Jeff Bridges, he's got Nic Cage levels of decision making when it comes to movies. Meaning he likes to get paid, and unlike Cage can't count on having a full schedule regardless of what he appears in? Cage makes a lot of bad movies, but he also has two or three every year and enough are good that he keeps getting more work. Bridges hasn't had a full dance card in a long time.--Dave Title: Re: R.I.P.D, the spiritual successor to men in black? Post by: Velorath on July 22, 2013, 01:43:32 PM So based on the box office, I'm guessing nobody saw this, eh? Including critics. There was no screenings for this one, and all the reviews came out a day or two after the movie's release. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Paelos on July 22, 2013, 01:46:53 PM Ugh, when they withhold the screenings, that means only one thing.
I saw this and RED 2 and thought, if they don't do really stupid things this might be a couple of fun romp movies. But alas. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Ingmar on July 22, 2013, 01:49:18 PM Yeah the no screenings is probably why it tanked. People know about that rule, by and large.

Post by: Paelos on July 22, 2013, 03:40:39 PM Bridges doesn't make a lot of good decisions, then he makes like a REALLY FUCKING EXCELLENT ONE, then like 5 in a row that suck just to prove that he doesn't make good decisions.
True Grit remake is the last good thing he's done. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Surlyboi on July 22, 2013, 08:41:48 PM Bridges doesn't HAVE to make good decisions.
Seriously. He's the son of a well-known actor. Brother of another. Nominated for six oscars and winner of one. Fuck, the goodwill he got for Big Lebowski alone is enough to carry him over with fans and the money he's made off of the good and shitty movies, not to mention the voice work he does is enough to make sure he's not hurting for cash. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: MahrinSkel on July 22, 2013, 08:49:13 PM Granted, Bridges could get more work if he wanted. Who knows, maybe something about the project intrigued him, or he did it as a favor to somebody. Cage will make any movie that will pay his quote, which is low compared to how much his name alone means to box office receipts. He's made some stinkers, chewed a lot of scenery in some roles that he was grossly miscast, but I don't think many of his movies have actually lost money.

Of course he doesn't have to. He doesn't have to work again, period. You just would like a guy with that much talent, who can bring that much to a role, not to do something really dumb because he simply doesn't have to do it. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Lantyssa on July 23, 2013, 12:01:49 PM Maybe he likes doing those roles? If he's not hurting for money, maybe he just enjoys working and not having to do super-serious roles all the time.
Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Merusk on July 23, 2013, 12:12:24 PM Or he could take the same approach as Sam Jackson. "You're paying me? How much? Done." (At least I think it was Jackson that said it. It's someone big who was asked why he was in so many dumb roles.)
Hell, I would. Is is great to get the accolades and be good in stellar roles? Yes. Is it better to whore yourself out while you're a hot property because fame is fleeting and fickle? Yes. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Margalis on July 23, 2013, 12:39:02 PM Actors generally try to keep acting. If you read interviews even with big-name actors there is a sense of near desperation that comes from knowing that at any time your phone could just stop ringing and you're done.
If you look at the IMDB page of most well-known actors you'll see recent movies you've never heard of. Work is work. Most actors are not choosy. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: naum on July 23, 2013, 01:00:39 PM Jeff Bridges was on Colbert last week, ostensibly to promote this movie. But he didn't seem too enthusiastic, even as they played a clip. Then again, every time I see him on TDS or Colbert it seems like he's stoned or amped up something.
Clip was same short scene from the trailer and it didn't excite me much, and it looked like Bridges was still in True Grit character for this movie. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Is it better to whore yourself out while you're a hot property because fame is fleeting and fickle? Yes. Michael Caine is the first guy I always think of for this approach. Anthony Hopkins does the same thing too. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Merusk on July 23, 2013, 05:15:16 PM Yeah, I think both of them are on record as saying something similar, too.
Hell, Joan Rivers had a wonderful bit soliloquy about it on one of Louis C.K.'s shows. Never turn down work, because you never know when you might not find it again. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Lakov_Sanite on July 23, 2013, 05:21:01 PM Add Morgan Freeman to that list.
Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: UnSub on July 23, 2013, 11:48:57 PM Or Ben Kingsley.
Remember to add to the pay cheque the shooting dates - Uwe Boll's entire modus operandi in getting some of his larger names is to minimise the time they need to be on set. So an actor can perhaps pick up a role (and the pay) in between the shooting of another film. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Ironwood on July 24, 2013, 02:08:59 AM I can't believe we're having this converssation.
Acting's a job ? Really ? Like any other contracting gig, the actors who do best take the jobs they're offered. If they're good, they'll stand out. For every shite film and script they do, they're increasing the chances of a really good one happening because of the wide net they cast. All the actors mentioned in this thread have REAL stinkers attached to them. Do we remember them much ? We do not. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Tebonas on July 24, 2013, 02:38:00 AM Or as Alec Baldwin put it:
Quote People don’t realize actors are like plumbers. When you invite a plumber to your house and say, “I want you to put this sink in my bathroom,” the plumber doesn’t say, “I’m not going to install that sink, it’s hideous. You have the worst taste in sinks!” No, he just says, “OK,” and he puts it in. Title: Re: R.I.P.D. Post by: Ironwood on July 24, 2013, 02:41:31 AM Exactly.
