Title: So...anyone still playing?
Post by: luckton on February 06, 2013, 02:46:32 PM
(insert Slowmo meme here)

But seriously, I'm having more fun with this than I did with GW2.  Anyone still out there?

I am, Luckton but I've been a bit busy and am on the other side of the World so timezones don't match.

Most of my time is taken up doing endgame stuff but happy to chat or help out if needed! I think you've already added me to your friend's list

I'm just focused on getting outfits but that's my long term goal as well Surly

I still play but usually during the day EST.  I'm sure my brain will adjust to this time zone as soon as I move to another.  Oh well.  I also started a new char which is finishing up Blue Mountain.  I never see anyone chatting in f13 regardless of when I'm playing though.

I hop in every now and then. I love the setting and the stories, although I haven't really gotten far to be honest, because combat; I just don't care for it at all.

I also think this would have made one kick ass single player game with an online component instead of an MMO. That way when you're running through Kingsmouth, for instance, you can actually see progress from your work. While that's typical in MMOs, something about this game just makes me think that visual feedback is necessary. Skirting around the same pack of zombies gets old quick and takes away from the immersion. And this game could have incredible immersion if it weren't for the standard MMO stuff. Hell if it had been set up that way instead, I could have gotten past the combat.

They could probably make a lot of money if they simplified all the systems and resold it as a single player console game.  You could go online to do dungeons.  They would have to make the plot lines between Kingsmouth/Egypt/Transylvania tie in together and have a definitive ending though.

All they need is a slapped on cover system with tons of crates everywhere to hide behind!

That's mean.  You should get to keep it after a certain amount of time.  Though guess you can't give us details or opinions.  Stupid NDAs keeping us from learning all the juicy tidbits.

I picked this up for 10 bucks around the holidays and just started checking it out recently. Haven't really played enough to get myself out of the starting area yet. If I can find the time this weekend I intend to give it an honest effort playing around with some different skill sets, as nothing has really grabbed me right out of the gate for combat skills. I am finding the atmosphere and cut-scenes pretty neat.

I started with blades and ar then swapped ar for fists because the blades/fists deck is very survivable for all of New England. It requires a couple of tweaks, but is good. Most of those tweaks are earned on the way to blades/ar deck (slayer).

I am now working on Gunslinger (pistol/elemental) for the outfit. I would imagine that I will have it filled about halfway through Transylvania. I may go for the "fill the whole damn wheel" one at some point.

I am not because
1) its requires  sub  to even log in back
2) I have done everything in it (every quest and every dungeon achievement)

But I keep  thinking about TSW and how this was probably one of the best games I ever played
- Rich and detailed environment
- Memorable characters , stories  and plot arcs
- dynamic and fluid combat in dungeons , with  challenging nightmare mode which was fun to beat  (unlike others MMOs where its just grind for drops)

Really great game which sadly didnt succeed :(  .Reminds me of fallen earth - which was also good game (albeit not anywhere as good as TSW) no one knows about

I tried to get into the game but it was during the zombie madness or whatever and I ebded up shelving it. I went back to GW2 but keep wondering whether I should give TSW another shot. It's not that the game is bad, I liked the feel but the questing didn't feel fluid and that damn wheel - I think I prefer the PoE tree.

Evidently if you do subscribe, you get free cash store money every month and a free gift.  This months gift was some sort of Egyptian headdress, you know the cat one who's name I can't remember right now.  Dammit.  So now there's a bunch of people running about wearing an Egyptian cat who's name I can't remember headdress.  It's amusing!  I may not know what the hell I'm talking about, btw.

Probably Bastet since she's the one people are usually referring to when they talk about cat goddesses, though Sekhmet had the head of a lioness too.

I'm playing a bit again now, doing the issue quests atm (Tyler Freeborn one is amazing, pity abut the singing stones one being bugged though)
Not sure what to do afterwards, i'll have to look for a dungeon group which takes newbies i guess. Even though i have half-decent gear, i barely remember what the dungeon bosses were like when i played, let alone know what the new ones are like

I haven't done any dungeons either or killed any rare spawns.  I might at some point.  It's still good so far without those things, although I'd like to get better goodies.

As I just started I have much to do.  I Scoured Kingsmouth and about to do the same to the Savage Coast.  I like there are no "real" levels.  I feel no need to rush to that goal and I can take my time enjoying the side stories.

When I was just about done with Sun City, I decided to go back and do the baby quests I paused or missed.  There were quite a few.  I got a sweatshirt!  I also finally sorted out that stupid boat house quest.  Geez.  They really fucked that one up!  Anyway, I have crappy gear because I've never done any of the dungeons, but I got a chainsaw!!!

Title: Re: So...anyone still playing?
Post by: CmdrSlack on March 10, 2013, 09:26:39 AM
I have only done the first dungeon. It seems like I see the most dungeon spam in Agartha.  My big problem now is finding a build that helps me survive the mobs with a hojillion HP. I basically skipped the last few quests in the Shadowy Forest and jumped to Carpathian Fangs because I simply could not solo them by any means.

Title: Re: So...anyone still playing?
Post by: Signe on March 10, 2013, 10:31:39 AM
I ended up making my character a bit tanky because I was dying so much, too.  I never did Polaris but found recently that I can actually solo the mobs there.  Just.  There's not so much xp in it at this stage for me, either in Polaris or doing the old quests I missed, but the quests are fun.  I have two builds, both tank-ish and with penetration (not pervy penetration) but one is pretty much hateless (really, Spellchecker?  Dateless?  Fuck you.) for soloing.  Although I can survive most fights, even bosses, it takes about three times as long to kill something as it did with my dps guy.  Getting used to a new mouse is one of the reasons I backtracked to do old missions.  I need to learn to hop around without pressing dangerous thumb buttons.

Post by: Llyse on March 10, 2013, 09:21:19 PM
I had a lovely time on Sunday doing silly stuff like 3 manning early dungeons with me being an overgeared healer/dps/tank and slightly geared dps and undergeared Savage Coaster who picked up shiney blues.

Then two more friends joined and we did The Darkness War Elite for more gear fun.

With timezone difference being a major pain, I'm happy to try and meet up on the weekend to help people enjoy the fun that is random Dungeons with other f13 people and non serious businessness.

I've got a question on CD keys since been thinking about trying this out and didn't want to start a new thread for it. Saw a link to a Swedish site selling the game for what amounts to about $7.50. If I bought it there anyone know if I could apply the CD key to my NA Funcom account?

Edit: Nevermind, it's a boxed copy not digital download.

I logged back in for the first time in a few months and discovered I had over 12k Funcom points or whatever they're called.  I bought the last 2 DLC's and 2 potion things that give you ability points, one gives you 100 the other 50.  You can only use them once a week, though.  This must be something new as I never saw them before.  I also had 120 of some other kind of currency which I was able to buy some gear with.  That must be new, too.

Anyway, how and where do you get the auxiliary weapons?  Do you get them through quests or vendors?

TSW and Binding of Isaac are the only games that are still installed on my computer. Even though I don't play TSW that often, I (was one of the few who) purchased a lifetime subscription, so with a lifetime of free monthly Funcom points and some other little cosmetic perks now and again, it's really the only F2P worth playing for me. It's fun to log in and play the new updates when they're released, and I still haven't seen all of the content or unlocked all of the skills, so there's always something to do.

Title: Re: So...anyone still playing?
Post by: Surlyboi on July 05, 2013, 09:49:51 PM
I also bought a lifetime sub. Don't regret it for a second and just logged in yesterday for my free one-year t-shirt and the double AP bonuses. There's a bunch of free shit happening until the 8th when Issue 7 kicks off. Looks like I'll be playing this a lot over the next couple of weeks.

Yeah I'll be aiming to do all the guardians as well as the new flamethrower.

Edit: Did 4 of the guardian's last night and it's not bad exp and fun. Just go /chat join anniversary and friend whoever's advertising they're on a boss, meetup, get to the coordinates, hit a boss and get free exp/achievements.

I'm definitely thinking of doing this for my alt...  :why_so_serious:

I randomly started playing this again, never got out of the first island before I quit. Did some quests, now I'm supposed to head to Blue Ridge Mine. Some mobs were kicking my Chaos/Rifle ass, so I splurged my points on the Commando deck to see what's up. Got my ass kicked even more, but I guess that's cos all my gear is health focused.

Title: Re: So...anyone still playing?
Post by: Merusk on July 19, 2013, 06:00:12 AM
I picked this game up on Steam and it makes no sense to me, I can see why it tanked so quick.  They need at least a tutorial on the whys and wherefores of decks and powers AND a statement somewhere therein that you should be switching decks for certain encounters.

Expecting your players to figure that out or research enough to find that out is clownshoes. Only hardcore players do that sort of thing.  Great way to foster an elitist community, terrible way to try and run a game.

Still, as my white-clad Pistol/ Elemental character builds more starter decks I'm learning.  Still can't take on mobs in areas I should be able to at 60Ap, which is going to require redoing stupid zombie stuff, but meh.  At least the ring and xp-booster the anniversary event gave me makes point grinding go pretty quick.

Wish I knew why everything other than the starter zombies still con red, though.

I picked this up and its way more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

Just feels super unoptimized?

Also, shadows should be the first thing to lower/turn off.  That seems to have the biggest impact.

I think my system might finally be needing an upgrade.

Not just for this, but I've played enough games over the last year at low settings.

Title: Re: So...anyone still playing?
Post by: jakonovski on July 19, 2013, 05:13:13 PM
The Commando business really didn't suit me, so I decided the problem was Assault Rifles. Went with Enforcer (Shotgun/Chaos) and mobs are finally dying instead of me. Plus it feels extra manly to unload your shotgun at monsters and then finish them off by punching them with your green magic fist.

One thing that really weirds me out is that every quest in the Blue Mountain zone is marked as hard when I take it. I have level appropriate gear so it makes no sense. Maybe it's because the mobs have only just started dropping the next QL of gear?

Title: Re: So...anyone still playing?
Post by: Miasma on July 19, 2013, 05:36:33 PM
The conning system for both mobs and quests are odd, a by product of there not being one clear level to rank against.  IIRC the missions con against your skill levels in talismans and equipped weapons.  So if you've only been increasing your weapon skills but your talisman skills are still at QL1 it would con hard against a QL3 mission.  It's a good idea to keep all your talisman skills up but the early temptation is to blow all your points on weapons you want to try out.

Title: Re: So...anyone still playing?
Post by: Surlyboi on July 19, 2013, 07:38:58 PM
Talismans first, weapon shit will always get better as you progress, but your talismans will help you with more than just your damage output.

It's running smooth as glass on my machine, but then, most things do.

Abandoned my first character for now, because I'd spread-out too much and decided if i was going to regrind Kinsmouth it was going to be on a character that I could be focused from the start.

Holy shit is Sword/ Fists powerful. So magic is a dumb choice in the occult game.  Lesson learned.  I'll pick-up Rifle at some point  soon for ranged work since that's the 3rd most common thing I see obvious twinks/ replays running around with, but I'm certainly not going to mess with magic for a bit.  Even then it seems like go Blood or go home.

You shouldn't have to redo a character but funcom tutorial clownshoes. Are you sure some upgrades from Surlyboi/me won't make your original character fine?

Swords is godly as a starting point, and ranged/magic is underwhelming initially sadly. It's not that different from Wow other dikus.... is it?

I wasn't terribly attached to him and was going to start an illuminati at some point anyway so I can come back around to see the Dragon stuff in time.   Like I said, I know I could go back and farm Kingsmouth for points, but nah.  The new character is already on to QL5 swords and building for QL4 talismans and I'm only hitting the Orochi stuff whereas I was struggling to equip QL3 gear on the first character who's on the school in the 2nd zone.  I just really fucked-up point allocation with him.

Anything not in your storyline can get skipped and Moths are pretty high on the skip list.

Thanks, I will.  I'm typically only playing for an hour or so because of the +xp milkshake.  I might stretch in to a few hours on Saturday/ Sundays if I don't have anything else going on, but I'll keep an eye out.

Moths weren't that bad on the 1st character once I figured out what the effing problem was.  They call for help, the fuckers. Have to peel them off and kill all of the biggies in an area before you kill the workers.   After that it was pretty simple. Their charge is easily walked out of, not even requiring a dodge and was the biggest issue.

What got me to restart was doing the school quests. I couldn't handle those mobs at all, dying or being nearly-dead after every fight even after switching to Blood-Ele.  I simply didn't have the QL gear to be doing it and attempting the one where you go to the boathouse finally made me realize I had to go regrind SP in Kingsmouth, to which I said "makes more sense to start anew and focus."   (The Demons also kicked my ass because of their anti-healing hits and the Amusement Park has that awful graphic effect that gave me headaches.)

Fair enough, swords and blood lasted me until Translyvania pretty much personally and even there all I needed was a slight tweak.

Secret World definitely plays more like a single player which I enjoy more lately. There are still group things to do but it's definitely not as polished especially when the storyline is instanced for many parts of it.

Bumping just to add that after a year, I've returned to Secret World. As bold and interesting as games like GW2 are, ultimately for me SW wins just because:

 - best characters and storyline of any MMO bar none. Better than 99% of single player games to be honest.
 - interesting character development and skill system
 - really high quality 5 player content. cannot emphasise enough how good their dungeons are compared even to WoW.

Almost finished Egypt and then it's off to TRansylvania, yay!

My mini-map has disappeared and I can't make it come back and now the overworld map has gone, too. It's really, REALLY detrimental to game play.

Grr.

So after getting my ass kicked in Egypt for a little while, I moved back to Blue Mountains.  Now I'm doing OK but tired of the story. Yes, yes, yes, very tragic with the zombies and the fog, etc. I already beat-down the 4,000 year-old mystic, why do I care why your ghosts are upsetting your cats?

I'll note it's very odd how the choice of skills can make shit impossible to kill but there's no clues to let you know, "you should be using magic, not physical attacks here."  or "Oh, this guy will totally eat your shit if you try ranged attacks, but melee him like a pro."

Like all Funcom games the lack of documentation or ability to figure shit out without doing a lot of metagame research is really irritating.  I think that's really the most disappointing thing of the whole game, the rest is pretty enjoyable.

I've come back to the game after the disappointment of ...basically everything else. Am surprised you are having problems there - if a mob has a special defense of mode it's indicated by a buff on the mob that's permanently there. There's nothing I can think of in Blue Mountains which is that mjrderous though - that stuff only kicks in in Transylvania where the game expects you to have multiple builds and abilities.

I actually prefer the side stories to the main story personally. I loved the old lady in the house in blue mountains - thought she was a fantastic character in a cast of great characters.

Have you done any of the dungeons? The blue gear from there does make life easier

No dungeons at all.  No LFG means standing around spamming like it's 2004.  No thanks I'm over that shit and only have a few hours to play.  I'm not wasting AP-farming time doing that.

I suspect this has lead to some problems, in that my gear is lower level.  QL7 greens in Egypt was rough.  Another problem is most likely that I'm not leveling both lines of my weapons at the same time.  I've got a main damage (sword) and a support weapon (rifle) and I'll push the main line of those, to the QL of gear that's dropping then backfill.

I started doing the backfill after going back to BM and it's getting easier.  At 7/5 and 6/7 while at talisman 7 now.

Um, there is a group finder. Just sign up for the dungeon you want, or form a group from the people listed on it. I've used over the last two weeks to do Darkness War, The Ankh and Hell Fallen normal and Polaris, Hell raised, the ankh and hell fallen on elite as well.

(Being a tanking red for dungeons as per usual for mmo's).

There is?  Well fuck, how the hell was I supposed to know that?  Ugh, this company!

Thanks.

Got all excited by the promise of new progression in 1.8 and reactivated my account.

Everyone I used to play with back in the day has jumped ship at this point, so I'd love to piece together another friends list (or cabal on the freak chance that anyone else is a Dragon on Grim) of people to run nightmares with. I did Master Planner of Polaris, Hell Risen, Darkness War and Ankh back in the day. Hell Fallen was a complete mess then, and none of the other nightmares had been implemented yet. I run primarily as a healer, but can piece together a dps set, or if people are really, really desperate and don't mind a learning curve, I've probably got the gear and abilities to tank the first three at least.

I'm Ides on Grim. Feel free to friend me and pester me if you see me on.
