Title: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: 5150 on January 23, 2013, 04:18:50 AM I haven't seen this posted anywhere so just in case anyone cares.........
Flying Lab and Sony are parting company at the end of the month and you have ~1 week to migrate the PotBS element of your Sony account to the new people (http://portalusgames.com/) here https://www.burningsea.com/page/migration/soe The whole thing seems pretty rushed as the notification email went out on 19-12-12 and the migration went live yesterday and you have until 31-1-13 to do it. Hopefully this isn't an indication of how things will go once Sony are out of the picture Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: WayAbvPar on January 23, 2013, 10:03:30 AM Thanks for the heads up. I didn't see any mails, so this saved my account. Not that I play it, but it is nice to have in case I want to go back.

They need to set up a whole new infrastructure to support the game (which doesn't appear to be doing well enough for SOE to just keep it running as is) and didn't seem to have much time to do it. There may be a re-launch bounce, but it takes time to iron out glitches with the transfer, get your customer service staff up to date, set-up reliable payment systems, etc. Plus everything is going F2P, plus new titles launching this year...
I don't see POTBS lasting to the other side of 2013. Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: Rendakor on January 23, 2013, 09:04:42 PM At least this lets the game close without SOE taking the negative press from it.
Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: Falconeer on January 24, 2013, 12:39:45 AM I loved the idea, and hated the execution back when it was launched. Anyone can give us a very quick rundown on improvements and if it is fun now?

Anyone can give us a very quick rundown on improvements and if it is fun now? The only significant change I'm aware of (and it pre-dates free to play, as I refused to give SOE any money after the NGE so didn't play before F2P) was the removal of the ability to build first [and second?] rates as they were imbalanced. Those who already had them still got to use them until their deed ran out. There was a dev post relatively recently (read: in the last couple of years) talking about them coming back (in a new balanced state) but I don't think anything came of it. I think there are a few people hoping this may actually happen once SOE are out of the picture but I share UnSubs concerns. Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: 5150 on February 01, 2013, 09:28:14 AM So far so bad
Game is down with a message saying it is closed, presumably we'll all have to download/install the same client from the new owner. Burning Sea website is down (expected up bu 2nd) with a message saying to check the portalus website for updates but that site doesnt apear to have been updated since it went up last year  Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: Xanthippe on February 05, 2013, 08:35:55 AM I loved the sailing parts, hated the land parts.

I did have to laugh at the update that said they were having issues getting the server side to run on the latest version of Wndows - you'd have thought they'd have tested this shit beforehand? run into some issues "encountered with running the servers on the latest and greatest version of Windows.” I have a bad feeling about this....... Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: Lantyssa on February 06, 2013, 07:55:51 AM They didn't use the original OS? They're trying to port it now!?!
Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: Yegolev on February 06, 2013, 09:52:38 AM Do they mean Win8?
Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: Lantyssa on February 06, 2013, 10:32:05 AM I hope Sever 2012, but I wouldn't put it past them at this point.
Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: UnSub on February 06, 2013, 07:26:24 PM I don't think the POTBS devs had time to test anything.

I'd certainly hope so [over Win 8] I don't think the POTBS devs had time to test anything. That certainly seems to be the case but, even if you just work from the public announcement they had at least a month to get stuff organised (and presumably they knew about the split internally for longer). I really struggle with the fact that they decided on an [untested] OS upgrade at the same time as the migration though. Reading between the lines from the migration blog they might not even have the new launcher ready yet either! Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: 5150 on February 15, 2013, 05:04:35 AM The new launcher is now available http://www.burningsea.com/page/support/download but despite pointing it at my existing install it seems to want to download the whole thing again
Either that or the download servers are MASSIVELY busy/crap/all of the above Game servers are apparently still down to allow everyone to patch/install but the test server is online. Also blog says everyone will get 500 burning sea money (whatever the hell its called) when the dust settles. Thats been what? 2 weeks now since they went down? Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: UnSub on February 15, 2013, 06:35:13 PM And that's just to get the test server.
Yes, a lot of their players will be thinking, "I'll come back later" and then forget about it. Title: Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea migration now live Post by: 5150 on February 18, 2013, 06:12:06 AM Well it took a little over 24 hours for the launcher to do whatever the hell it was doing (no idea if it just downloaded the whole game again but at mostly 30kbps I doubt it) it crashed about 95% (no idea what time as I was asleep) and resumed from there at much better speeds (dont know if they sorted the back end out of if the load just decreased)
Two errors, one regarding a DLL which I just ignored and doesnt seem to cause issues and a second about PhysX missing (you actually have to download the PhysX legacy package and not the one the error message links to) All of my accounts appeared to be present and correct (certainly characters and levels were all there) so it looks like they got something right |
