I grant that there's almost nowhere to with Tonto besides making him a super-serious politically correct Native American uber-warrior but Capn Jack Sparrowing him doesn't seem a preferable alternative.

Because it took itself way too seriously, in fact. The second two are so plot-heavy--and so attentive to the thin, stupid mythology of the first--and so attentive to the least interesting characters. So do I think Verbinski et al have learned their lesson? No evidence that they have.

And I agree Lone Ranger will likely be the same. I'm ok with that as a general principal. But this movie does nothing for me. Just another vigilante in a mask, and there's more than enough of those to go around nowadays.
