Title: Ubisoft: What always-on DRM?
Post by: Minvaren on September 05, 2012, 03:29:40 PM
"You can stop blowing up our inboxes about it now" (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/09/05/ubisoft-scrapping-always-on-drm-for-pc-games/)

Quote
In an interview on RPS today, Ubisoft tells us that they will no longer use their controversial “always-on” DRM. In fact, they quietly scrapped it months ago, but haven’t made that official until now. In what is a really remarkable turnaround, the publisher pledges that from now on they will only require a single online activation after installing, with no activation limits, nor limits on how many PCs it may be activated.

Light filters through...  given sufficient application of the cluebat.   :awesome_for_real:

At least this helps me feel better about buying AC3 at release.

It still defaults to always-on (you have to explicitly turn it off), so the last time Uplay died in July lots of people were effectively still locked out of their games. We'll see if that's still the case with AC III or if in fact it defaults to not always-on.

In fact, they quietly scrapped it months ago, but haven’t made that official until now.

Does that mean that their older games have been de-fuck-up-ed? Or just that future games won't have it?

Either way, that's some good news.

With existing games there's a setting, like with Steam, that supposedly let's you play disconnected as long as you've connected at least once.

A quick count gives me a list of at least 5 games I'm interested in buying if they de-DRM certain games from the last 2 years.

I was interested in the new Ghost Recon game. If anyone can confirm the DRM is gone.

I've always wanted Settlers 7. If true, they may finally get my money.

It'd be nice to be able to buy the Assassin's Creed games for PC instead of PS3.

I just remembered that I bought that From Dust game cheap on Steam, but refused to install it when I saw it had Ubi-DRM

De-DRM Anno 2070 and I'll grab that.

Interesting. If true and for past titles.. there's a few I'd probably grab this coming Christmas sale on Steam.

I still don't much like even having to do a single online activation at all (and I don't know why, honestly, just bugs me, I guess?) but much like SC2 I can live with it.

They're still doing limited DRM activations and crappy PC ports that are late.   I don't think they get it yet really.

Supposedly new games will have unlimited activations. It's not clear yet if "always-on" will be the default but you can turn it off like it is now or if it'll be gone completely.
