Title: Red Dawn Post by: sickrubik on August 10, 2012, 12:04:35 PM I could have sworn there was a thread for this already, but couldn't turn one up.
Anyway, after being stuck in rights hell, it's finally getting released... the movie we were all waiting for... the Red Dawn remake. And now it has a trailer. http://io9.com/5933572/first-crazy-trailer-for-the-red-dawn-remake I'm really sorry. Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: 01101010 on August 10, 2012, 12:24:24 PM Replacing Chinese invaders with North Korean invaders :uhrr:

Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: sickrubik on August 10, 2012, 12:37:54 PM Replacing Chinese invaders with North Korean invaders :uhrr: What. The original movie was Soviets/Cubans/Nicaraguans. Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Evildrider on August 10, 2012, 12:42:48 PM Harry Dean Morgan is like the perfect replacement for Powers Boothe.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Rendakor on August 10, 2012, 12:43:36 PM Wasn't this already remade into a mediocre video game?
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: sickrubik on August 10, 2012, 12:47:30 PM Wasn't this already remade into a mediocre video game? Not really remade, but yeah, the John Milius wrote "Homefront". Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: HaemishM on August 10, 2012, 01:00:37 PM
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: 01101010 on August 10, 2012, 01:03:06 PM Replacing Chinese invaders with North Korean invaders :uhrr: What. The original movie was Soviets/Cubans/Nicaraguans. The original "remake" was about the Chinese invading - from what I read. Might have had something to do with the delay in releasing it. Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: sickrubik on August 10, 2012, 01:04:14 PM Replacing Chinese invaders with North Korean invaders :uhrr: What. The original movie was Soviets/Cubans/Nicaraguans. The original "remake" was about the Chinese invading - from what I read. Might have had something to do with the delay in releasing it. No the studio that it belonged to went away. It was stuck in limbo/dev hell. It wasn't reshot. Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: HaemishM on August 10, 2012, 01:04:31 PM Yes, its release was delayed because they had to change the villains from Chinese to North Koreans.
EDIT: I don't think they did any reshoots, mind you, but they did have to change the nationality. It isn't like Americans would know the difference anyway. Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: sickrubik on August 10, 2012, 01:09:24 PM It ws a mix. I completely forgot that they changed the chinese thing. I always assumed it was always "vaguely asian".
But MGM was the studio doing it, and they were.. having issues. But that may have been somewhat a smokescreen, but it was also part of what delayed Cabin in the Woods. via wikipedia, hilarity. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dawn_(2012_film)) Quote "In March 2011, the Los Angeles Times reported that MGM is changing the villains in its Red Dawn remake from Chinese to North Korean in order to maintain access to China's lucrative box office. The changes reportedly cost less than $1 million and involve changing an opening sequence summarizing the story's fictional backdrop, re-editing two scenes and using digital technology to transform many Chinese symbols to Korean. The changes will not eliminate all references to China though will give North Korea a much larger role in the coalition that invades the U.S. Producer Trip Vinson stated, "We were initially very reluctant to make any changes, but after careful consideration we constructed a way to make a scarier, smarter and more dangerous 'Red Dawn' that we believe improves the movie."[16]" So they went from "this might offend chinese" to "now we're just assuming they all look alike." Yeah, nothing offensive about that.So in a roundabout way the ended up making a remake of Homefront. Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Nevermore on August 10, 2012, 01:09:53 PM Population of North Korea: ~25 million
Population of US: ~313 million Yeah. Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: palmer_eldritch on August 10, 2012, 03:25:55 PM I am so looking forward to this.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Teleku on August 10, 2012, 05:38:31 PM Oh goody, China will complete it's take over of AMC theaters at the end of August. (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/china-wanda-group-buy-amc-entertainment-354476) To bad its still not China in the movie, but everybody knows who it actually is, so the Chinese public's responses to it playing at AMC theaters across the US should be rather comedic.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Chimpy on August 10, 2012, 05:43:16 PM Does it have a young Lea Thompson in it?

Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Lantyssa on August 18, 2012, 05:51:25 AM A lot of Bush's mannerisms were purposefully done to increase his Drinking Buddy appeal.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: UnSub on August 18, 2012, 09:08:02 AM The original is hilarious.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Teleku on November 21, 2012, 11:37:45 AM Hey, this is out! And currently trending 10% on rotten tomatoes for some reason....
:awesome_for_real: Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: WayAbvPar on November 21, 2012, 11:40:17 AM I really need to see this. I might wait for video release though, so I can properly adjust my blood alcohol level. And maybe offer my own running Rifftrax commentary.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Merusk on November 21, 2012, 11:40:39 AM An America, FUCK YA movie coming out after a bitter and divisive political campaign wherein half the country couldn't give a shit if the other half were nuked and it's not doing well? I can't imagine.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Teleku on November 21, 2012, 11:48:39 AM One of the reviews said the whole thing is a tea party fantasy as well. Apparently the president just doesn't react at all to the not-Chinese invasion, which is why it's up to the kids to take there 2nd amendment guns and drive out the chinks themselves.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Chimpy on November 21, 2012, 06:26:40 PM The whole premise of the original Red Dawn was an objectivist-with-a-gun-fetish-who-hates-mexican-people's wet dream. I wouldn't expect anything less hyperbolic in a remake.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: UnSub on November 21, 2012, 08:05:25 PM The whole premise of the original Red Dawn was an objectivist-with-a-gun-fetish-who-hates-mexican-people's wet dream. I wouldn't expect anything less hyperbolic in a remake. As I said, the original is hilarious. All these Communist troops parachuting into Nowheresville, USA, they shoot the black guy first for no real reason, the old man who sends his virgin 18-yo daughters (or granddaughters, can't remember) with the red blooded young US males so that the communists don't get their godless penises anywhere near them, the father who says something like, "what I did in raising you might have been considered abuse, but now I'm justifed!" and a host of other cliches. And Patrick Swayze can't act. At all. The only reason it is probably remembered is that it is a great teen boy power fantasy - that they'd be able to just pick up a gun and take on trained soldiers and win. Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Abagadro on November 21, 2012, 11:50:06 PM All you really need to know is that the original Red Dawn is 100% John Milius, the guy the Coen brothers based Walter on.

In the mid 80's there wasn't a lot of entertainment choices and it was potluck if you chose to rent Red Dawn or something like 976-EVIL (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094597/), which was fucking terrible. Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: angry.bob on November 24, 2012, 07:57:21 PM So, I have to ask what the "completely new type" of weapon that the NOT CHINESE North Koreans were able to develop that lets them successfully invade? The country has electricity in about a 10 block radius, it's version of NASA is literally a card table with a PC on it, and their citizenry knaws on pine bark to stave of starvation. I just really want to know what sort of macguffin allows this plot to happen.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: HaemishM on November 24, 2012, 09:08:15 PM Marketing. :awesome_for_real:
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Muffled on November 25, 2012, 12:33:03 AM Looked like it was a briefcase sized EMP or something similar, from the trailer I saw. Maybe it was supposed to be a Goldeneye style satellite system, which might be even sillier.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: SurfD on November 25, 2012, 05:51:50 AM Actually, from the bits of the movie i have seen while doing theatre checks, it is WAY worse.
The Briefcase is nothing more then a secure communication system, which they use to keep in touch with other groups of invaders. Their "weapon" was nothing more then a massive EMP pulse that appearently took out all the US Military hardware. The Macguffin seems to be that the Russians are backing them, which is where they managed to get huge quantities of weapons and equipment. Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Draegan on November 28, 2012, 07:47:17 AM Man, I had no idea EMP pulses could kill all of our soldiers.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Merusk on November 28, 2012, 07:58:31 AM Well of course it would!
1) Obesity epidemic means more heart attacks and soldiers with pace makers! 2) The heart DOES run on electrical impulses after all, so the EMP was strong enough to disrupt the healthy soldiers hearts, too! :awesome_for_real: Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: Ratman_tf on November 28, 2012, 08:36:02 AM Now I have an image of a plucky Korean pilot who gets a lucky shot on an American aircraft carrier and knocks out a big, comical sattelite TV dish, and without The Kardashians, and Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, the American military winds down like the battle droids in Phantom Menace.
Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: calapine on December 04, 2012, 09:14:31 AM Americans being unable to fight without their electronic gadgets sounds about right.
Got told stories about Apache pilots that landed to refuel in Hörsching on transit flights (think during Yugoslavia crisis) that marked their position on GPS to find back from the mess hall to the hangar. Title: Re: Red Dawn Post by: MahrinSkel on December 04, 2012, 12:54:57 PM Hell, I've done that with my phone in mall parking lots.

Tomorrow, When The War Began. Australian movie, very obviously Red Dawn with Aussie accents. Invaders are generic Asian with no specifics.
