Title: Source film maker

Quote
The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by us here at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.

To celebrate the announcement of the SFM, we've also released "Meet the Pyro", the ninth installment in the "Meet the Team" series. Like all of our animated shorts, we made it using the SFM.

If you're interested in making movies and games in parallel, sign up for an SFM beta key and start shooting your movie on location inside the world of TF2 today.

... Amazing. Playing the long game in terms of making tools not one-offs, looking at the behaviour of their user community and realising what they do which they would do better with a tool and then releasing that tool free with some top level material to start with. Valve are so impressive.

Most of the results will be terrible, but the potential for the occasional gem is created.

To me, Valve is pretty much the Pixar of the gaming industry.  It'll be great when they finally get swallowed by one of the big boys and everything turns to shit.

If they weren't privately held I'd be worried.... and it would have happened years ago.

Valve are one of the big boys. They're probably worth about as much as EA nowadays, except it's all privately held stock anyway.

I'm aware of all this, merely not an optimistic person.

I really liked that - I'd like to see it taken further and turned into a Dead-Island promo style, reverse action film.

Although I may have missed it, part of me thought it was.

Reminded me of the huge role that music plays in film.
