Title: Thottbot: Falling Down and Going Boom?
Post by: Toast on February 18, 2005, 02:03:48 PM
Something is going terribly wrong with Thottbot's data gathering.

http://www.thottbot.com/?f=n&name=&title=&minl=&maxl=&minloc=&maxloc=&zones=90

That link is what Thottbot sees as the NPCs in Scarlet Monastery. Much of thottbot is now beyond worthless with all the garbage info flowing in.

Conspiracy theory:  Blizzard put in a code tweak to intentionally break Thottbot.

DumbAss (http://www.thottbot.com/?n=243492) and IMwithSTUPID (http://www.thottbot.com/?n=234341) as monsters, that's pretty funny.

Conspiracy Theory #2: If you hacked their client you could send them garbage yourself. Virtual vigilantes.

Thottbot's days of being a good source of information are long behind it.  We've (my group on Shadowsong) have been noticing this for a while.  It's still good for looking up some information, but it's just not a reliable tool anymore.   I don't think it's been updated much in a while or the updating isn't working.

I don't mind though, I feel somewhat guilty for using spoiler sites, but sites like that are nice to use incase you get completely stuck in a quest or want to make sure you didn't miss any content you would have otherwise liked to try.

They added the ad banners today or it's just about me noticing them now?

Isn't it more impressive that they're for MxO? It seems WB/Monolith knows it's target consumerbase: people who just bought WoW. It'd be genius if the banners only showed up on pages for level 60 gear.

I think Thottbot's automatic data collection grabs shapeshifted druids and shaman and flags them as NPC's.

IMwithSTUPID sounds like a pet.

When I did a search for tin ore, and got incomprehensible shit such as this (http://www.thottbot.com/?s=tin+ore), I never used it again.

Tin Ore is in the backpack zone and has 1 kill.  Is this supposed to mean something?

Try searching for tin vein if you're looking for mines, not tin ore. Thottbot isn't Google, it doesn't try to read your mind and figure out what you mean. Personally I find it quite usable, just takes a little understanding of how it works. You could try Allakazam if you want a bit more hand holding and don't mind the popups.

What popups? Oh, you don't use Firefox. Allakhazam is faster, handles quest lines better and tracks auction house prices. Thottbot has taken to removing information on drops, presumably to assist their farmers. I'm looking at you Binda, Kong, Loly, Forever, Hzandy, Jayxing and a host of Chinese names I can't recall. May you soon end up with Pembaria.

You're absolutely right.  We don't yet have the technology for a website to correctly know that if somebody wants to mine ore, what they mean to find is a vein.

EDIT - I Guess it's not so bad, after all.

Click on the tin ore object at the top. It will then give you a list of what drops it. Scroll down (and go to other pages if needed) to find the OBJ you are looking for. In tin's case that would be a "Tin Vein", but I have discovered that iron comes from an OBJ "Iron Deposit" so it doesn't always fly to put in "<metal> Vein".

That's the very thing I'm having trouble with ATM.  Thanks for the heads-up.
