Post by: disKret on May 30, 2012, 10:54:38 PM
CDP announced their new RPG (targeting 2014) based on "paper" RPG Cyberpunk.

Woot.  Probably my second favorite RPG after Mechwarrior/Battletech.

Was Cyberpunk 2020 a follow-up to that ruleset? I had that book.

Yeah Cyberpunk originally came in a box set.  2020 was the 2nd edition, I guess you could say.

Shadowrun, Cyberpunk, Wasteland 2, and Mechwarrior Tactics in the works this year?  Someone pinch me.  I'm dreaming or dead.

If they fuck this up, I will skullfuck everyone of their corpses, their ancestors corpses, and their descendants corpses for all time.

THIS. I have been begging for a game like this for 20+ years.

The US President has also come out as vaguely pro-gay marriage as well.

You're obviously dead.

As for Cyberpunk 2020: my memories of how balanced the system was aren't good.

Balance/schmalance. That's what the GM was for. Got characters who can headshot an army to death with a pistol the minute they get in range? Armor the bad guys heads. Wake the characters up naked strapped to a table. Problem solved.

Goddamnit, I loved CPunk 2020 so fucking much. There is no way this game can live up to my expectations for it, but please just don't let it suck.

I'm commenting more on balance when thinking about how CD Projekt is creating the game.

Some short Gamasutra article - how CD Project wants to introduce Cyberpunk for new players and not fuck it up like in Witchers.

I love how Science-fiction has to constantly bump up the dates for Future to happen. At least Battletech went 31st century. That SHOULD be safe (although I doubt anyone will still be around, so that is more Fantasy than Sci-fi).

Are they going to have mercury bullets? I loved me some mercury bullets.

I used to worry about this with my novels. Then I read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" realized it was set in like the year 2000 or something and stopped giving a fuck. If the story is good, it doesn't matter if it's set in a past future that never happened.

I also spotted Dynalar, Militech, Kiroshi and News 54 logos.  Looks like they're actually pulling in a lot of the minutiae from the PnP fiction/lore.  Good times.

There is a "secret" message (2:14 minute)

"Do you like our latest creation? We certainly hope so :) Yo may remember that we sometimes send you guys secret messages like this. It's a great way for us to speak right to you instead of burying ourselves in corporate mumbo-jumbo so let's begin!

First of all - have you noticed all the details in our teaser (yes, it's a teaser. We'll make a proper trailer in the future)? If you know the Cyberpunk setting there are some things you can spot, like implants - look for the weapon hands and the real skin - corporate emblems that should look familiar and more. Happy hunting!

You're probably curious about the release date. It's currently scheduled a way off in 2015 but in truth the delivery date is more like "when it's done". We will release Cyberpunk to you when we're convinced it is nothing but pure, refined, unadulterated awesome. We want it to be the most kick ass futuristic RPG ever - OK, maybe this sounds pretty bully, but it is our actual goal! You judge if we deliver it!

Oh - and you may wonder why we announced our game so early before the release. The reason is that we're still building our dev team so if you are a talented dude or dudette willing to work in a really different company (gamers rule & boring corporate stuff drools!) on a super ambitious project, send us your application right now! [1] careers@cdprojektred.com

So you want to know what kind of game Cyberpunk 2077 will be? The short description is that it will be a story-heavy, nonlinear, open world RPG based on the well known Cyberpunk pen&paper system and setting. Building open world games is something we are mastering right now and we believe that properly joining nonlinear gameplay with an excellent story telling will bring a totally new quality. Mmm... We'll tell some more about it soon!

And that's not all that's new. We are about the reveal our other project which is much closer to being completed and yes, it will also be a fully open-world game with an intense story. You can probably guess the game we're talking about :-) On the 5th of February it will all be clear.

So stay tuned as we will have quite a lot to show and tell you soon!

We are waiting for you on our newly created forum called Afterlife - what other name could we have chosen for it?"

I find it odd they made a (cool) trailer for a game that's two years away and they don't even have the dev team in place. Is it a hiring tool? Seems like a waste of money.

What makes you say they don't have a dev team?  During the early stages you usually have a smaller dev team to get the prototypes and core pieces done and then expand as those pieces allow for more of the game's content to be developed.

I hate trailers like this. A bunch of overly-stylized nonsense that has almost nothing to do with the game or how it will play. It is meaningless, and probably cost a non-significant amount of money to produce. Like enough to pay a team of playtesters/QA people for a couple of months  :oh_i_see:

The worst part is that it's not even really a Cyberpunk trailer, since the game is at least two years away.

It's actually a secret Witcher 3 announcement.
