Title: Two Words: "New Coke"
Post by: SirBruce on February 17, 2005, 06:16:54 PM
Quote
NEW YORK Feb 17, 2005 — Bugs Bunny and his pals are being updated for the future way in the future. The WB network will take the famed Looney Tunes characters as models for a new children's series, "Loonatics," that will air on Saturday mornings starting this fall. The characters' descendants Buzz Bunny and the like will be superhero action figures for the cartoon set in the year 2772.

The network's animators have re-imagined Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Wile E. Coyote as sleek new figures for a modern age.

"We all flipped for it," David Janollari, president of the Kids' WB, said this week. "We just said, `Wow, what a great way to take the classic Looney Tunes franchise that has been huge with audiences for decades and bring it into the new millennium.'"

Janollari said both boys and girls enjoyed the new action figures in test runs of the show. Their parents may be a little surprised, however.

"I think the legacy is intact," he said. "If anything, it's an homage to the legacy instead of a destruction of the legacy."

Scared?  Well, take a look:

Here's another gratuitously large picture (http://pw1.netcom.com/~sirbruce2/loonatics.jpg) of the new characters.

I died a little inside when I looked at that picture.

I must hug my Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVDs even closer to my chest now. Heal me Mel Blanc!

I don't necessarily dislike the idea of a futuristic looney toons show, with the angle-drawn characters and bold colors.  After all, when I first heard about Tiny Toons, I was skeptical, but they made them work and even went on to make them babies.  It's tempting to think, therefor, that the media is just trying to unfairly spin this new Loonatics show as a "facelift" for the old looney toons characters, when it really isn't anything new.  The problem is, however, that it seems that Warner Brothers really is pushing that theme, rather than simply passing it off as another new show.

Also, the pink bunny is aparrently futuristic "Lola Bunny" from Space Jam, rather than Babs Bunny.

Actually I'm most annoyed at Buzz's color -- it's like that bad yellow you get from an old yellow marker which has picked up too much green or something.  I'd much rather he were the blue or green one.

I think they're kind of cool looking...  a bit evil-ish and metalic shiny.   Who knows about the shows... I don't really watch that sort of children's program..  I shouldn't think there would be plots that I would enjoy very much or anything.  Weren't Animaniacs messing with classics, too?  What's the difference?  Everyone seemed to pretty much like those.

Thing is, they don't breathe a word about comedy in that article.  He says they'll be superheroes.  Action figures.  If the show's just another goofy gimmick to keep with the same Looney Tunes sense of humor, great.  No problem.  If they're turning them into action heroes, the doom and gloom opinion stands.

I just took it for granted that it was for some new cartoon show, like animaniacs.  I don't have kids so I don't shop for things like dolls or action figures.  My nephews are a bit too old for it, too, although one kind of had a thing for a 'powderpuff girl' which worried me for awhile.

Sometimes it surprises me the sorts of things you guys are passionate about, but it's also very, very sweet and makes me smile.  I have a friend like that, but his is for Thunderbirds and Dexter's Laboratory.  It's cute.

FUCK YOU, WB.

The Animaniacs and Tiny Toons were funny, but they weren't trying to change the entire style and theme of the characters. This... this is a goddamn anime-inspired, pokemon-seizure inducing abortion of an idea, breaking the bones of my childhood and sucking the marrow out wholesale.

Check out the Blue Roadrunner.  IMO the best of looney toons was the roadrunner and coyote.

How about Speedy Gonzalez?

I too wanna know, when does it start?

That new show is great! I watch it daily with my son. Hell, I even bought the DVDs. The new show is so far superior to the old one that I don't know where to start listing its greatness.

I'd like to mention that the new Duck Dodgers show they have on Cartoon Network is worth a watch.  They recently did an episode with Cadet (Porky) introducing Daffy to an MMOG and all of his guildies.  Though they didn't use those words.  It was pretty damn funny.

Personally, though, I really have a soft spot for this guy:

See, that's what I have a problem with.  Why do these people feel the need to "bring something into the new millenium" at all?  Why the hell can't classic things just stay, uh, classic?  If we must have them remade, why not remake them truer to the spirit of the original?

I didn't think the new Looney Toones version was either bad or good.  In fact, I had little reaction at all.  I would have loved to have hated them, since that would have at least been something.  Instead I just thought, "Meh."  I hate the endless recycling of what were once the products of excellent creativity into ever more drab media to babysit the younger generation.

I think I'll don plaid pants and grab my walker now ...

Yes, I am cranky :)  I was seriously into Looney Tunes as a kid.  I suppose it's a little like having the church you got married in torn down to make way for a gas station.  Of course we still have the existing cartoons, so that's not a perfect analogy ...

Personally, I don't hate them.  I do hate that we have to have nonstop, mediocre retreads of existing entertainment properties.  Why couldn't they just have made a new bunch of characters in that same futuristic style without mention of Looney Tunes?  Or the contrapositive:  new, trendier characters with the same retro artstyle as the old cartoons?  Or (gasp!) a completely new cartoon altogether?

Originality is passe.  Long live the endless cloning of other people's imagination!

I see this shite as nothing more than Warner Bros. trying to protect the soon to be expiring copyrights on their flagship characters like Bugs Bunny by retreading them into the stupidest-looking piece of animated drivel since hentai. The fact that they've given Bugs Bunny the name "Buzz" and Dirty Harry's voice just completes the childhood raping.

We can all say "that's all folks" to the original vision for Loonatics, WB's futuristic, anime version of the beloved Looney Tunes characters, thanks to an 11-year-old boy. Fifth-grader Thomas Adams found the WB's concept art to be too dark and menacing, doing an injustice to the characters he had come to love. After starting a website and tallying 80,000 signatures in support of his endeavor, Adams got the WB's ears to perk up. Instead of the pointy-eared, dark anime-like characters WB envisioned, they're now dumbing them down to softer, less scary versions. All of this before the cartoon aired even one episode, scheduled to debut this fall among the Kids' WB! programs.

I don't know which I dislike more. The original anime-style looks like some network exec said "Make them look X-treme!!" but these new ones just look boring. Plus shouldn't the coyote be trying to eat the roadrunner instead of standing next to him like they're pals?
