So I'm trying to sort out my music and I have roughly 90gb worth. My main goal is to have an easy way to sort & play on my computer and then transfer playlists to my Galaxy note.

When I try to use windows media player it frequently freezes, crashes or does some other sort of tomfoolery that pisses me off.

I do not like iTunes. I have tried to use it, telling myself "millions of others get by just fine with it, maybe I just need to get used to it" That didn't work.

So I recently tried winamp. They have a simple, clean interface. They have an android app. It looks like it should cover all my bases. yeah no.

After sorting out my mess of music folders I added all of it to winamp. Started making playlists and then started getting random freezing, the occasional crash and trying to transfer to my phone just really didn't seem to want to work. At times it would freeze, sometimes it would lose connection. sometimes it would say transfer 100% and yet its not all there on my phone.

It really looks like a good solution but in practice it has just been frustrating.

Should I just be transferring files directly onto my sd card and then making playlistis within my phone. I kind of wanted to avoid this as samsung kies sucks and if I want to access my sd card directly I have to remove the case and battery to get at it any time I want to make a change. Also creating playlists on the phone is not as easy.

Anyone have any good recommendations?

Songbird has an android app too I think but ahahahah it's Songbird.

PowerAmp isn't bad for Android. I just copied all my music over to my phone (Galaxy S2) using Kies and then PowerAmp did a decent job of picking up the playlists. I use Windows Media Player on the PCs.

VLC plays music, too!

Can you set up playlists easily with vlc and then transfer/sync to your phone?
As far as kies goes, I've nerver had anything but problems with it. That being said the issue may be somewhere between the keyboard and the chair.  :why_so_serious:

Spotify has clients for both, I haven't messed with the Android one at all though.

I'm using Winamp to sync playlists between my phone, my PC at home and my work machine. It did go a bit weird when I started but I uninstalled it, purged the iTunes stuff that was still in my music folders, reinstalled and it worked like a charm after that.

I second this. You can test drive poweramp for free before it requires you to buy it. That said, I didn't even last the whole trial before I purchased it. Ton of options on it.

Same, going for the full version was a no-brainer after about 30 mins checking out the free version. I think it might be the most expensive app I've bought (£3.15!) but worth every penny twice over.

All the Android ones I got free from the Market eventually turned to shit with adds or bugs or both so I use the Amazon mp3 player now and it works like a champ with no crap attached to it. I can't say it has a lot of features but it finds songs and plays them and that's all I need.

I don't have an android device but I will +1 the Vlc recommendation. I love it for Windows. It works very well and does things I like by default that I can't be bothered trying to configure windows media player to do like volume on the mouse wheel. Actually just checked. Windows media player doesn't appear to have a key command configure menu.

For windows, I've been using xmplay (http://www.un4seen.com/xmplay.html) since forever. It supports a ton of music formats, is very lightweight, stable, and has a lot of neat functionality. It's especially nice if you have Amiga / PC tracker music in your library, obviously...

On my PC I use Songbird and on my phone (Samsung Captivate running CM7) I use Google Play Music.  My favorites playlists are sync'd on to the SD card through Songbird and the rest of my music I just pull down from Google whenever.  You could run a similar set-up with Spotify Premium and not need to hook the phone/card to the PC.

I used to use PowerAmp, but it's a bit more than I needed and I was never a fan of the library interface.  And Google Play Music works just fine with local files.

I use Doubletwist but it is similar to iTunes in being a bit of a pain to set up if you don't already have your music organised into playlists and can be a bit temperamental about things it does sync up with the WMP playlist library and then lets you sync with your phone. As a way of just keeping track of what you've got on the phone it works well and the player itself is nicely put together. Most of the time I'll just stick it on shuffle all songs but it's got a straightforward selection of whatever else you'd need.

Never bothered to use it as a player on the PC though, for that it sucks compared to Winamp or even WMP.
