Anchorman is one of my favorite movies. Comedy sequels pretty much never work nor are they needed. This does not bode well.

I agree that it was a good movie, but I it's schtick was getting thin by the end.  I can't help think about the Ace Venutra movies.

Somethings are best left to the imagination.

That said I expect it to make hundreds of millions.

The first grossed $85MM. I think "hundreds" of millions is a stretch, but it certainly has a good shot at outperforming the original.

It's probably made quite a bit of money on the disc/rental market as well.

Didn't Anchorman have a pseudo-sequel film that included the material they didn't use in the original movie?

Anchorman is one of my favorite movies, and so damned quotable.

On the other hand, Ferrell has flopped more than a fish on the shore, so we'll see.

Ferrell's flops have been the usual attempt by comedic actors to do serious stuff.  Anchorman 2 is clearly his realization that his career will die if he keeps trying shit like Everything Must Go (which was not a horrible movie, actually).

What's he ever done that was serious ?

He's only had two serious roles that I can think of, and one was eight years ago.  Also, The Other Guys made money in the same year that Everything Must Go was a flop.  I'd hardly say that his career is in trouble, no matter what he decides to do.

And can you tell me the names ?

I honestly don't know.

Didn't care for Ricky Bobby or the basketball and skating ones, leading to a house ban on Ferrell in sports-themed movies. Bewitched looked awful (didn't bother watching it). And Land of the Lost?

Old School was good, but he was set back in the ensemble a bit, for the better.

Elf is my favorite xmas movie. When he's on he's on. When he's not, it can just be shouting.

I liked Semi-Pro well enough and Ricky Bobby had some funny moments. I even liked Land of the Lost, but Danny McBride made that movie as much as anything. Ferrell is at his best when he's playing off someone else, IMO. And when he has a director who knows when to yell "CUT!" Anchorman had funny moments, but there were times they really should have cut the scene and moved on.

He was in a Woody Allen movie in the early '00s, but I can't remember the name of it.  Much like most of Allen's work for the past two three decades.  It was a comedic role, but he wasn't playing Will Farrell so it could be considered vaguely serious.

I'd agree with this, althought I haven't seen Elf. Anchorman is definitely the exception as far as movies where he is the lead go. As a secondary character he is brilliant, as he can be odd without stifling the whole film with his presence. I'd say that Vince Vaughan and Danny McBride are much the same, while Paul Rudd and Steve Carrelll are stronger leads. I'm on the fence about Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen, although I'd say they do better as leads, while Michael Cera is better as a secondary character. Michael Cera and Will Farrell play the same character in almost any role, while the others are (to varying degrees) more mixed in what they offer.

I agree overall, as I either love his movies or hate them.  My taste fall along your lines, though I thought Blades of Glory (the ice skating one) was pretty damn funny.

I think Fozzy Bear impregnated Miss Piggy and thus Seth Rogan.

Knocked Up gave Seth Rogen a lot of credit in my books.

It was fucking terrible.  Stay far away.  But honestly, it wasn't Will Ferrell's fault, the movie itself was just shit.

It's a cute film. Lots of classic sci-fi references. Rogen does the part of playing an indestructible idiot very well.

Oh, I like him well enough. It's just that I can't ever shake the image of a stoner Fozzy Bear when he's speaking, especially his chuckle.

Ferrel is hit or miss.

The Other Guys was awesome. So is Old School. And Elf. Ricky Bobby, not so much.

Stranger than Fiction, I did not expect much, yet was entertained and it was a quality flick IMV.

You can't blame him for Bewitched (unless he wrote the script/produced).

Talladega Nights is one of my favorite of his movies. 

Stranger than Fiction was rather good. Other than that...yeah, he's almost always better as a supporting character.

Will Ferrell just bombed horribly on SNL. If he can't be funny there, it's over.

I thought the most poignant moment was the sports skit with a cameo by Forte reprising his 'Greg Stink' commentator character, they literally just cut in Ferrell to have him do something.

Hits and misses are par for the course on SNL.

Several skits.  I didn't see it, however, so I can't tell you what was off.  All I recall hearing is lots of disappointment he didn't bring back any of his standard cast of characters.

The few bits I saw seemed pretty standard Ferrell, though. I've always found him hit-or-miss.  Maybe you folks tastes have changed since the days he was in every goddamn thing out there.
