Title: Bouts of health issue after 1 week holiday
Post by: rk47 on January 31, 2012, 07:50:27 PM
Ok so final day of my Jakarta trip got into vomitting incident at 3am .
Whole reddish tint - coated by my stomach acid no doubt, dinner came out.
Queasy as hell, but I went to bed again.
Woke up at 7 am Felt like utter crap.

Utter utter crap.
As I ate breakfast, I noticed I was sweating cold sweat. Then start feeling giddy and took some off the counter headache medicines. Didn't help much with nauseas.
5 hours later, boarded my flight, slept the whole way. Ate another paracetamol tablet when landed, felt much better.

Hit showers, next day is sunday, trying to get used to the usual routine.
Woke up with heavy flow of diarrhea. Five times in like 10 hours. Holy shit.

Took monday off. Seems okay.

Back at work on Tues, went off meds. Ate breakfast, lunch, no problem. Dinner, home. BAM . Three in fifteen minutes. What the fuck?

Now it's Wednesday, took my diarrhea meds, reach work in heavy sweat, cold, sneezing coughing, those stuff hurt the whole body. It's 12 pm I feel like taking half the day off already. Not looking good. At least diarrhea did not kick in. But what should I eat for lunch?

Eat something binding like cheese or oatmeal, or maybe some soup.

Proper thread title should be "I feel like shit"

Also TMI

I had something extremely similar in Mexico.  Recovered enough to mostly eat solid food and keep it down with no drugs, but still had major stomach issues for 2 weeks after I left.  Finally got some antibiotics and it went away within a day.

I assume your doctor has been made aware of this?

Doc did not prescribe anti-biotics cause I didn't complain of headaches on Monday morning, just constant liquid - shat.
I must've drank like 4 litres of water just sitting and going back n forth from desktop to toilet.

Now i'm at office...all fine, but no appetite. THe half glass soya milk i drank this morning  nearly vomit it our but kept it in at 11. I'm staring at this instant porridge now for lunch.

Yeehaw.

Oh yeah, I did not drink the water, hell no. I had all the water cooler water, thank you. And soft drinks. And coconuts.

Sounds like stomach flu. Your description pretty much matches what I get.  And I had it 3 times last year.

Well, to be entirely honest: without anything more to go on, he's right to not give you antibiotics.  That's probably not comforting.  Make sure he is aware of every symptom you just listed.  You were sort of in the land of horror show diseases, so scrutiny is warranted.

General advice for staying hydrated. (http://rehydrate.org/solutions/homemade.htm)

I was drinking bottled isotonic water, am I doing it wrong?  :why_so_serious:

You fool!  Tonic water, not isotonic water. :awesome_for_real:

You need to feel confident that your doctor is keeping track of some of the things it could be beyond a nasty if ordinary bug. Hate to be gross but is your diarrhea now yellowish, bubbly, frothy, etc.? If so, you might have giardia, and there is actually something that can be given for that (not an antibiotic, it's something that kills the protozoan that causes it). Giardia will go away eventually but it's nasty in the interim.

It's possible you have some other parasite and there are some pretty nasty ones you could pick up. I'd also worry a bit about cholera, which I don't think presents with a fever usually.

My brother and sister-in-law came to visit over Thanksgiving and managed to get me and my entire extended family sick with probably the worst virus I've had in years. I literally spent 3 days going to the bathroom every 30-45 minutes, and laying on my bed in agony with chills and muscle pain so bad it felt like I tore both my hamstrings. I had a similar illness when I visited my brother in California like 5 or so years ago.

I think my family literally makes me sick.

The only thing that probably kept me out of the hospital was forcing myself to drink poweraid/gatorade to keep hydrated.

Giardiasis (http://www.medicinenet.com/giardia_lamblia/article.htm) or stomach virus.

That's my contribution. Get to the doc and on some flagyl and you'll find out if it's the latter.

Doctor?  Who needs a doctor when the combined wisdom of F13 is at your disposal?

Golytely. Fast for a day then chug a gallon of this. Sure, it will do fuck all for a viral infection, but it will clean you out.  :awesome_for_real:

Lemme get this straight.  You got really ill in Jakarta and then hopped right on a plane?   :ye_gods:
No offense but that was bumfuck stupid.

If you were worried about the airfare being non-refundable they would've gladly rebooked your flight till after you'd gotten checked out.  No airline wants sickly people on their planes.  Aside from that, you could've easily had an episode midflight with nowhere to go.  That just sux.

Anyways, hope you feel better but next time don't fly after contracting an unknown possibly contagious illness in a 3rd world country.

Heh, you think that matters? How quaint - you're assuming someone has actually been checking the dispensers to make sure they're clean. One of the coolers in my client waiting room was out of commission for about 2 weeks while it got coliforms cleaned out.  :oh_i_see:

Be glad that once you got back to the US, you had access to decent toilet paper - I think I had something similar a few weeks ago, which basically knocked me out of operation for a full day, but felt aftereffects for at least a week.

Or read The Hot Zone with an airplane passenger carrying the Ebola virus.

Authors exaggerate the effects of Ebola.  For example, this is Mayinga N'Seka:

I understand that fresh fruit and veg can be risky to eat as well, since you don't know how they've been handled or what kind of water they have been washed in.

I think..I should be fine now. Just passed something solid before heading off to work. Ate a nice salad last night for dinner. Everything should be in order now. I did quit the isotonic water though. Can't stand the taste after 3 days.

Thanks for the support guys. That was a really bad episode.
