Title: Internet Slackers raise over $50,000 for a Kenyan Orphanage
Post by: K9 on January 27, 2012, 07:10:57 AM
This is Omari, he got hacked in the face by a machete defending an orphanage of 35 kids from attackers (http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/oye34/meet_omari_two_days_ago_he_returned_from_the/)

They wanted $2000 to build a concrete wall with a barbed wire fence, they got over $50,000.

Follow up thread (http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/oyukh/omari_would_like_to_say_thank_you/)

I found this story pretty uplifting. It's not the first time the hivemind has done good things, but it's nice to see some good in humanity, and be reminded that on occasion the internet can be about more than just cats and porn.

I've been watching it since this morning, pretty great.

The exchange about Machete Guys in the replies of the first post is superb.

This story just gets better and better.

NPR's Planet Money did something similar for a school in Haiti after the earthquake.

It pretty much turned out to be a failure because what the hell does a 3rd world school teacher or even orphanage administrator know about building and project management?

They have the teacher in Haiti something like 75k in donated funds after they talked about his plight on air.  2 years later what does he have?  No school and a well laid foundation and some building materials.  To him 75k was a fortune and he could just build the school of his dreams.  In reality, even in Haiti, 75k doesn't go very far in building a real facility.

The guy in this story is building a big wall to keep people with machetes away from killing the children and using $280 a month for food. He may improve the amount of fresh water available. I feel like these situations are mildly different.

Omari is also a civil engineer. I have faith that the wall will be built. Beyond that it's hard to predict what's going to happen with all that money.

There is also talk that they will try to buy the land the property is on so they can't be evicted.

There were quite a few engineers and such volunteering free consulting services and there is Engineers without Borders (and now Redditors without Borders of course). I think from what I read that the chap posting the updates is a volunteer from one of the big American State colleges, and the orphanage seems to have received other american volunteers before, so I suspect they'll have access to good advice. Buying the land the orphanage is on sounds like a good idea too.

On a side note, for future reference, what is the significant difference between Srs Bsnss and Gen Disc?

Whimsy.

Serious Business is meant for fluff topics though there is obviously overlap with General Discussion. I didn't think this topic was fluffy enough for Serious Business so I moved it.

The Serious Business subforum title should be in green.  :awesome_for_real:
