Post by: Ginaz on October 27, 2011, 12:35:44 PM

Even that fucking train game has zombies now?

OK, pop culture. That's it. NO MORE ZOMBIE STUFF. You're done. They were fucking played out beyond all belief, and that is the absolute bottom of the barrel that has just been scraped.

Thanks for saying what I've been thinking for over 2 years.

Zombies:  More played-out than vampires.

Yes, I am so unbelievably sick of zombies. There's a camera commercial on TV right now where some perky teen makes a zombie movie on her new Cannon or something with her family.  Makes me want to chuck the remote at the TV.

Not a whole lot in this sale that I want to buy.  The stuff that I would, I already own.

I'm skipping vast swaths of the EU book I'm reading because of repetitive OHNOES ZOMBIES HAPPENED scenes.. Enough.

That said, I'm going to have to ponder a few things on that list. Pretty sure I'll grab LFD2, our children's librarian and her man have been playing it like mad for a while now. Sherlock + Lovecraft and Penumbra will probably come my way. Bioshock 2...not sure it's worth bothering with, the original didn't do much for me.

edit Actually....I'll just keep reminding myself about what's coming out in two weeks, instead!

Amnesia for $4, Bloodlines for $5.  Might snag a few copies to use as stocking stuffers in a couple months.

I think we've only really started to tap the zombie theme.

You know that Titan project Blizzard has in the wings? Zombie survival MMOG.

I support this sentiment.

Zombie Driver ain't bad for the price it is at. You'll get your monies worth of fun out of it.

Bioshock 2 for 5 bucks is tempting.

If you liked Bioshock the First, you should get $5 out of #2.

Also,

Zombies:  More played-out than vampires.

I support this sentiment.

All in favor?

The Dead Space pack is tempting, among other things.

Maybe I don't play enough zombie games, but I find the stuff to be mildly amusing.

Are the following buys worth it,

Painkiller complete pack for $5?
Terraria for $5?

Definitely getting Amnesia and Bloodlines...

I kind of feel Terraia was FoTM in retrospective. You'll never play the Painkiller pack and you know it.

Terraria was FotM but it's still a really good Minecraftvania game. With sweet, sweet loot.

I got a good 40 hours out of it, and that was before a lot of the content was added. I had also not yet played minecraft. At this point, I'd say play minecraft if you're into buildy parts, but Terraria is a better game overall (there's not much 'game' in minecraft). I vastly prefer minecraft mostly because I was not a console gamer in the NES era, so the whole vania thing doesn't play well with me. Still...40+ hours.

I never played that, is it a good game for 5 bucks. Are the graphics going to be super dated?

Bloodlines is a great game, with awesome dialogue-writing. Encountered a few annoying bugs/show-stoppers the last time I played, about half-ways through the game, no idea if those ever got fixed.

As for GFX - here's a random HD-video from youtube: Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines Gameplay -HD Widescreen- (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYfsbSam5dM)

Is Amnesia the one that was scaring the shit out of everyone? Not a horror fan at all, but anything that creates that visceral of a reaction might be worth checking out.

Yah, that's the one.  Own it, but haven't played it myself for fear of screaming like a little girl and waking up everyone in the house.

For several years you had to use a community patch to get by those issues, but apparently Activision finally did an official patch to resolve it. The graphics are decent, it runs on HL2's engine. The gameplay can be a little hurky jerky, especially in melee, but the game is totally worth it for the story and atmosphere.

Play a Malkavian if you want the full experience.

To add non-smarmy content:

Bloodlines. If you haven't played it, it's probably worth trying. If you can get past some datedness, it's a really great game with lots of individuality between the different clans of vampires. A Malkavian playthrough is going to be completely different than a Nosferatu playthrough. I've always meant to go back and play through a couple more times, I played through once as Ventrue (business suits and you get a cool apartment) and halfway as a...ehhh..what were the blood mage guys...one of those.

Amnesia. I really like this game. It's a bit rough around the edges, but nothing has done atmosphere better. Back when people were talking about the Cradle in Thief 3, which I didn't find all that scary. Amnesia just nails it, and I give kudos to any game not centered on combat.

Play a Malkavian if you want the full experience.

For the full experience, play as something else first, THEN play as a Malkavian.  The Malk dialogue is full of subtle foreshadowing that is really fun to spot if you know what's going to happen.

Is Bloodlines just as easily moddable if you have the Steam version?

Title: Re: Steam Halloween Sale
Post by: trias_e on October 28, 2011, 03:10:33 PM
Yessir.

Bloodlines still has some issues even with the fan patches, but for the most part it ran stable and fairly bug free when I played through it a couple months ago.  Malk is still the most fun I've had, and I actually played through it as one first time.  I say play whatever you want first time through, just play it twice if you get malk or nosferatu so you get a more...normal experience.

Amnesia should be played in the dark, with headphones on, and in 30 minute segments.  (if you can handle more than 30 minutes, all power to you).  And once you finish it, you can go laugh at people on youtube getting scared at all the parts that freaked out out as well (this might actually be my favorite part!)

Much like Joey and The Shining, I got to the jail levels and then put this game in the freezer.

No, seriously, it's an awesome game.  Awesome.

It's utterly horrifying.

The one big level with the pillars and canals/bridges? Masterful use of sound and lighting, furtively running from hiding spot to hiding spot.

Actually, I'm tempted to get Penumbra.

Penumbra Overture and Amnesia are quite similar, you can see how they refined the gameplay from one game to the next.

Spent ~$10 and picked up -

Painkiller Complete Pack
Ghostbusters: The Video Game
Woody Two-Legs: Attack of the Zombie Pirates
Cthulhu Saves the World & Breath od Death VII Double Pack

Pretty happy with my haul and didn't spend too much.  Pretty rare for me to hit both of those in a big Steam sale.  :awesome_for_real:

I bought it a long time back before it was on steam.  It's a very odd take on diablo, since you're basically competing against npcs.  I liked it, but never got very far in it.

Not sure if this is the place to put this, but since we are talking about Amnesia.  If you've played through at least the beginning as to avoid spoilers, I'd recommend watching day[9] stream his playthrough.  He just started.  http://www.teamliquid.net/video/streams/Day%5B9%5D
