Title: John Dies at the End

Trailer

Paul Giamatti and the director give me hope....  the two leads seem a bit meh.

This was a book you could you read for free online I remember reading a few years ago, it wasn't bad.  If they can keep the quirky surreal feel of the novel it should be an interesting watch.

I hope they can, but the trailer didn't give that vibe at all. Made it seem way more actiony-thrillery than the book. Way more guns than I remember.

The book feels like Sam Rami does Cthulhu.  It was okay, but not stunning.  I hope the movie works out, but honestly would have prefered James Gunn over Coscarelli.  Mostly because I like the feel Gunn brings to a film.  If you have not seen Super, I think the movie is brilliant.  Easily better than Kick Ass in all ways.

I agree completely with this.

Book was all over the place. I loved it for the most part, it's like the craziest person you know telling you the craziest story you've ever heard. The narrative was all over the place, but it was laugh out loud funny in a LOT of places.

So this is out now on Amazon's movie streaming service (and iTunes as well, I believe); just watched it with some friends. As a fan of the book, I thought it was pretty good; the two leads did very well as Dave and John, and the film captured the crazy humor. I'm not sure how well it'd go over with someone who hadn't read the book (all 3 of us had), since the story moves pretty quickly and doesn't exactly make a lot of sense. It was pretty weird to see Mayor Royce playing a detective, too.

Major cuts/changes from the book:

Told the wife to stop dicking around and read this so we can watch it together one night.  It's a crazy book, so I'm definitely ready to watch this.

Finally watched this last night and it basically was terrible. The acting was fine, but the plot was so heavily abridged that the movie failed to have any type of cohesion and made even less sense than the book. Stick with the book, ignore the film.

Its true. Book is worth reading. Movie not so much.

Bump!!!!

This is on Netflix now, watched it, have no read the book. I heard it was a bit like Cronenberg stuff in some ways, sounded cool. (To be fair that is true in some ways but not the ways that matter)

Got bored about halfway through. The characters weren't awful but they weren't likable either and there was no coherent plot of any kind. Stuff just happens then the movie ends. In terms of tone this sort of "irreverent" humor is so commonplace that it didn't do much for me. There were elements of an interesting plot and I kept waiting for it to develop into something but it never did - instead the movie just ended.

Read the book, as I said.

I read the book as a result of this thread.  Loved it.  I will probably see the movie at some point, but the book would be very difficult to movie-ize,
