Title: Drive
Post by: stu on September 18, 2011, 09:49:23 PM

A criminal aims to protect a pair of innocents from other criminals. Using cars. To a synth beat. It's a slow neon burn with Cali plates font. And brutal violence.

Drive is a modern action film lit by the 80's. I went in to this cold (not even a trailer viewing) and was blown away but there were others in the audience who didn't fair as well. As soon as I heard the Chromatics, I was sold. Really, I think the less said about this the better. For a simple plot, it has a lot of attentive touches and oozes style.

I'm just gonna post a clip from the first half of the movie that does nothing to hint at how viscous things get, but displays the character bonds and the soundtrack.

NSFW trailer [but it really gives a lot away - like, the entire movie, just about]:

I left the theater feeling like I'd seen a modernization of Shane.

I didn't like it much. I left thinking I must have missed something.

Nah, it's loosely based on a neo-noir book by a guy named James Sallis.

I really liked it, but it is a little pretentious in places.

The violence shocked me a little with how gruesome it was, I wasn't expecting that. It's been a very long time since any sort of violence in a movie made me flinch.

You're thinking of Driver, which imo is the best action-driving game ever made.  And yah, they should've just done a movie about that particular game instead of this artsy thing.

Good movie...a little slow at times.

Few details and lots of guestion left unanswered make for a good story.

Enjoyed the movie.

Saw it tonight, thought it was really good. Slow at times yes but I thought that just added to the brutality of the action.

There's a lady in Michigan who's suing the movie's distributor for misleading her into thinking she was paying to see a Fast & Furious ripoff.  :awesome_for_real:

Yah make no mistake, this is NOT an action movie. Thriller/Crime drama is much more accurate.

Necroing cause I just watched this. May have been the most incorrectly marketed movie of all time. The lady from Michigan was right - it was marketed as a F&F ripoff. Everything about the trailers that I saw for this was completely opposite of what you got.

That said, thought it was great. I hate Albert Brooks with a burning passion. I think "the Scout" was the worst non Uwe movie ever made. I loved Albert Brooks in this.

Really solid, moody crime drama. Definitely slow moving other than the car sequences, but really well done. See it if you haven't.

This movie actually made me wonder what could have been if Albert Brooks had gone a different direction earlier in life.
