Title: Mission Impossible 4
Post by: K9 on September 16, 2011, 03:04:55 PM
Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0LQnQSrC-g&feature=relmfu)

Looks to be continuing the Michael Bay school of summer blockbusters. It is a shame really, the first move was really rather brilliant, in its understated way.

The second one was awful though.

Didn't bother with MI3.

MI3 was the only good one. The second was a goddamn Woo-wankfest and the first had the depth of a thimble but was at least entertaining if you didn't think too hard. This one looks decent, though watching the nostril flaring midget act the badass is getting old. Brad Bird's directing it, so don't know if that's going to be a good thing or bad.

The first one was fucking tiresome.

Second and third also terrible.

That trailer was better than any of the three actual movies and probably better than this movie as well.

Don't ignore this one.  I liked it.  The audience actually clapped (not roaring applause, but clapping nonetheless) as the credits started rolling.

I will also add that I found it interesting that the pre-10pm Sherlock showings were sold out when I bought my MI4 8:15 ticket at the counter.

This one was actually pretty good.

Cruise is still the Mary-Sue but the supporting cast brings the noise.

I will give tom cruise credit for his stunt work he was doing in dubai. Saw some of the making of MI4 stuff and holy shit you could not pay me to do some of the stuff he was doing himself. I imagine the insurance agencies were wetting themselves when they saw him sitting on top of one of the antenas of that huge ass building in dubai.

The movie itself was probably the best in the series very good action movie.

That's kind of his thing in these types of movies. He not only wants to do his own stunts as much as possible he wants the stunts to be a "realistic" as possible. E.g. that scene in MI 2 where that blade comes down close to his eye? That was a real blade coming down close to his eye.

Eh, I didnt really get a lot of the Mary-sue vibe in this one.  It really gave the impression that he was barely makeing it by the skin of his teeth in many of the scenes.  Like the return to the room in dubai, or at the end where his character practically OOZES desperation when he gets into the car to "chase" the case down below.

I never fully understand why someone whose job is to be in action movies but whose name is on the poster gets more credit for doing stunt work than a double.

It is not as if the guy is an actor.

It's because he's already getting paid a shitton of money whether he does the stunt or not, so he's going beyond what is necessary to ensure that the audience gets a more realistic experience which is something noteworthy.

I don't think the "audience experience" has much to do with Tom Cruise doing stunts. It is all about his ego.

Besides, Xenu will protect him from harm, yo!

I disagree. Real stuns done by the actors look real, your brain gets that. See Jackie Chan.

He could swalllow a shark, I don't care.  I'm unable to watch any scientologist doing anything that distracts from the fact they are a scientologist, something that remains way more fascinating than any blockbuster.

There are a lot of scientologists in Hollywood. I can enjoy the antics of Jason Lee or Paul Haggis' films without caring which religion they take part in.

(Yes, I'm aware that Haggis has left the Church, but the majority of his work occurred before that point.)

For me it's not so much that he's a scientologist, just that he's been such an insufferable douchebag about it that it has tainted everything he has done, even before he got wild into it.

It's not like he is Mel Gibson or Roman Polanski.

That is true. He is worse. Roman Polanski at least doesn't run around and tells other people they should diddle underage girls.
