Title: Disgaea 4
Post by: Bann on September 07, 2011, 12:26:29 PM
So this showed up while I was at work yesterday. Anyone else pickup? I only put in about an hour before bed, and didn't get much past the tutorial levels. Nothing immediately jumped out as a big mechanical change. I just got into my Cam-pain room, which seems like its going to be alot like the classroom in 3. Picked up Etrian Odyssey for the GF as well, and I got the impression that we were each more interested in what the other was playing.

Still, I liked what I played of Disgaea 3, and am looking forward to getting deeper into this. anyone else have any early impressions or things not to miss?

Picked it up yesterday but had to work last night, then again this morning. After I eat I'm going to fire it up though, and I'll report back.

Edit: Ok I'm halfway through Chapter 2 now and enjoying it. The story is as comical as always (Fuka is hilarious) and I've unlocked the Item World so I can start grinding a bit. Got my first game over in there, when I ran into an odd Mystery Room. It was called a Summit I think, and after talking to everyone inside they attacked, including a level 800 (my party is level 13-19). However, getting a game over is a trophy and I had saved right before entering the IW so it wasn't a total loss. I also like that they've eliminated some of the redundant classes, even if they left some in for no reason (fighters, mages) and didn't always keep the gender I prefer (kunoichi > ninja).

My only complaint so far is that all the trophies are Hidden; not that looking them up online is hard, it's just dumb.

So I just finished up chapter 3.

This game. Just keeps getting stranger. Seriously, Japan. I get that this is what happens when Japan goes "lol japan", but still.

What the hell.  :ye_gods:

I'm about halfway through Chapter 4 now, and nothing's struck me as extremely strange. I'm kinda curious as to what scene prompted that response.

I haven't really started any of the CP farming stuff yet, since it seems all you can use it for is making your own maps and I can't be arsed til I'm higher level.

Plot/voice acting early on is pretty bad.  Maybe I'm spoiled by Disgaea 2, I keep hoping it'll be up to that standard.

Game looks solid, otherwise.  I haven't played a lot yet, however.

Most of the desco and sardine stuff is just.. what. Like, what?

I own disgaea 3, but had not really ever sunk my teeth into it. I bought it just before I got superbusy at work, and had always been meaning to get back to get back to it. I started this one with a slight understanding of the mechanics, and knowing that the story can be weird.

Put some more time in this weekend, mostly dinking around in itemworld trying to get a bunch of characters up to level to see what different things can do.

Whats this, I'm being invaded by pirates?  :awesome_for_real:
Wait, theres a new pirate bill in the senate?!  :drill:
Holy crap, I CAN MAKE MY OWN PIRATE SHIP?! :drillf:
Oh wait, my pirates lose to pretty much everyone.  :oh_i_see:

I'm enjoying it so far. Mid chapter 3, but spending alot of time on sidestuff.

I find the Desco stuff hilarious. The sardine stuff is hit or miss, I'll give you that. But then, I'm a huge weeaboo so YMMV.

Reverse Pirating was in D3 as well Bann, but it's mostly a post-game or nearly post-game feature; it's purpose (besides extra item leveling) is the acquisition of rare innocents (Statisticians, Managers, the +aptitude ones) and high rank weapon farming.

Started playing again and found an easy dupe method on GameFAQs. 2 hours later I've got a full set of Statisticians and I'm grinding Mt Ordeal 4. Level 9999 here I come! Once I get there, maybe I'll beat the game before I start actually maximizing characters.

I've been duping innocents too. Where did you find your initial statistican?

Reverse Pirating the 40th floor of some low level legendary spear.
