Edit: his letter to the board: Quote To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community: I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple''s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come. I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee. As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple. I believe Apple''s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role. I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you. Our CEO made a similar transition (CEO->Chairman) after a cancer diagnosis and was dead in a year and a half; if he had been able to work there's no way he would have stepped down, similar workaholic nature.

I have plenty of issues with the man, but he has undeniably had an enormous impact on Apple and the industry and it's sad to see him step down (especially because everything I know about him says that he would not step down if he could possibly avoid doing so).

Announce now, let stocks drop a bit, then stocks soar after launch of iPhone 5. If the launch goes relatively well, stocks will likely stay solid as investors feel confident in Apple without Jobs.
Which likely means Apple is pretty damn confident that iPhone 5 is a solid product. Except if the CEO is routed for harassment and replaced by someone else who was just chased out of his prior corporation, then there's a lot of "We're still executing our awesome plan, nothing to see here, Wall Street".

It suggests to me that Jobs' prognosis isn't good and he wants to see the book launched before he dies.
