Title: Archon: Evolution
Post by: MaceVanHoffen on February 10, 2005, 02:32:54 PM
The grand old game of Archon is being remade. (http://www.archonevolution.com/)  This was probably my favorite game on my old C64.

I only recently discovered this, so I didn't get into the beta.  But just thinking about playing an updated version of this game makes me all warm and gooey.

The best part: network multiplayer!

Ah yes, the old fantasy battling chess peices game.  Loved that back on the Apple IIe.  Archon 2 was a little different with an elemental theme but not as graceful as the original.  A facelift and smoother controls would make for a fun game (i wore out on old joystick but my lowely knight beat the dragon...once).

Wizard's guided fireball for the win.

I always preferred Archon 2 far more.  Maybe it was because I was the Juggernaut mastah, maybe because I just liked how the board was set up better, but I definitely enjoyed it more.  The first Archon was still a great game, though.

Remakes I'd like to see?  Raid on Bungling Bay done up in say, the Apache Longbow Assault engine.  Mail Order Monsters, Law of the West, and most of all, Space Taxi.  Goddamn, I'd love to just find a ROM of that game.

Every chance I get, I'll say this:

A Boy and His Blob.

Good god yes!  Raid on Bungling Bay was beautiful.  I spent many an hour cursing the fact that I couldn't seem get all the battleships before they were completed and launched.

There does seem to be a DTV game (http://www.gadgets.co.uk/commodore-64-c64-computer-dtv-direct-to-tv-games.html) that has lots of old C64 games on it, but no Archon and no ROBB.

EDIT: I did find an indy developer remaking Space Taxi. (http://www.twilightgames.com/spacetaxi/spacetaxi_info.htm)  For $19.95, I think I'll bite.

I want a remake of Sundog already. But if I can't have that I'll settle for Archon.

If it's a new, technically updated version of Archon you're looking for, I'd recommend giving Wrath Unleashed (http://www.gametab.com/xbox/wrath.unleashed/2247/) a try.  It's out for the PS2 and X-Box.   Given a choice between the two, I'd recommend the X-Box version because the PS2's loading time is a bit on the excessive side.

The game itself is somewhat awkward, and the balance could have been better, but it definately has that Archon vibe going on.  They replaced the chessboard with hex-based terrain, but you'll still be able to capture power points and fling spells around between action-based battle sequences just as before.
