Title: Blogs
Post by: Shockeye on February 10, 2005, 12:26:43 PM
I know many of you have blogs and some of you may be considering blogging, but what I'd like to know is if anyone would be interested in free blogging through us.

Running our own server gives us the option of installing blogging software so people can have their own blog sites.

Is there any interest in us setting this up?

Also, we can host domain names for such things as well. So if you have anothersillyblog.com, we can set that up for you.

I'd be willing to move mine to your setup.

You really should be running blog software on your main page anyway. Three reasons why: RSS, Trackbacks, and XML-RPC pings. All of which increase syndication if you're looking to grow the site.

I don't want to do any self promotion here (as I don't know if it's wanted) or I'd link to my own forays into blogging.

We could set up RSS and whatnot. But we'd rather people actually visit than do that feed shit.

That could be fun.  I'd even try to keep the navel-gazing to a minimum.

They have to know your site even exists before they can read it. RSS 0.91 only does the first 512 characters of a post. And you get to use pingomatic.com (read the about page) which tells 12+ blog aggregator sites (blog search engines etc.) that you just made a blog post.

Another example would be my.yahoo.com where you can add an rss feed and it shows you the latest 5 post titles or whatever. You click through to read the full article.

Hard to tell if it would matter though because F13 is more about the forum than the homepage posts at the moment.

Interesting. Very... interesting. I'd consider moving my domain over to that. Then again, I do get my hosting for free so I don't know for sure.

Yes please.  Might as well join the year 2002 and stop living in the wayback machine.

Help! I'm trapped in 1994. What are blogs for again?

If they're something like this (http://www.cesspit.net/), then I advise against it.

I have been pondering setting up a blog for months now. Were blogging to be available here, I would likely consider it even more.

See, I was going to post a link to that, but then I realized that doing that would reveal me as the asshole I am.

(Edit: Wow, I didn't realize Geldon was struggling to reach a 2.0 GPA.)

(Edit: Wow, I didn't realize Geldon was struggling to reach a 2.0 GPA.)

So, I ended up playing hooky. For most of the morning I browsed the forums of Grimwell.com, knowing full well that an additional Math111 assignment was being given and I wasn't there to receive it.

Gee, I wonder why.

I always enjoy Joe's blogs even though they sometimes confuse me.

Thank you. I think the trick is to look at it as though there's some strange inside joke going on within the writer's head, and the hastily written updates don't give the time to actually explain it to the reader.

I was going to post something very critical about failing to maintain a 2.0 in Math 111 which, where I went to school, was College Algebra but I did a quick search through google and found courses labeled Math 111 which were anywhere from Basic Math to Intermediate Calculus.

I'm currently looking into Wordpress, bBlog, Drupal, and Blog:CMS as options. The obvious options are pMachine and Movable Type, both of which I've used and both of which are assloads of uselessness. Joe has had experience with Wordpress as have I, and he can back me up in saying a monkey can run it like a god. Basically, it's weak. It's the blogging equivilent of putting up a .txt.

Drupal and bBlog are far more powerful.

Blog:CMS is overkill.

The other question is, would you all design them yourselves, or, I guess I could do graphics and whatnot and Shockeye could throw some official f13 templates together for whatever software we end up using.

We can also, of course, offer subdomains if you don't have your own domain name. So cheddar.f13.net would work. We can also set you up with mailboxes. I will say this though:

If it's inactive for long periods of time, we'll dump it. I mean like 3-6 months. Character Wipes are common here.

Also, I don't know how long this free blog shit will be offered by Shockeye and myself, but drop me a private message if you are quite interested and we can discuss things. Particularly if you have your own domain name as it takes 12-48 hours to transfer.

I've never really seen the appeal to people setting up web pages to discuss the mundane details of their life which I'd probably tune out if they were talking to me in person.  Still, if it were easy to set up I might be interested in making one to "review" whatever comics I pick up each week since I've never wanted to clutter up the forum with them.  So personally I'd lean toward whatever is the easiest to set up.

Only if the available templates were gothy enough (huh, what?)! I think i would be greately interested in having some kind of centralised place to read all of the crazy personal things you people write. I have my own, but i doubt anyone would want to read a whole lot of stuff about counter-strike strats.  :-D

Like any other media, blogs are only good if the creator knows his target readers.
Blog tools are just low level CMS that enables people to make better looking webpages easier. Some are good and have lots of readers. Others are crap.
Just like the Internet since it's birth.
Blogging is nothing new, just a better tool. And personal webpages are fine, if the person doing them, doesn't expect a lot of people to give a shit.
Mine has a section for friends and family. A section for future employers (now defunct). And a section for (Danish) students of journalism and others with that interest to find out some more about journalism school and whatnot.
In other words I know my audience, I don't expect revenue and I don't really want Google to index most of it, because only a small part of it could possibly matter to people, that don't allready know me irl.
But there's nothing wrong with crappy personal blogs filled with the mindnumbingly boring minutia of the bloggers life as long as it has just one reader - it's just the failure of search engine technology, that other people stumble upon them.

Oh, and I started using Dreamweaver and Flash. Now I use Movable Type, which I like so much I bought the new version. I have hosting though, but it's a good offer.

Title: Re: Blogs

We'd like to offer people a free blog on their own subdomain on one of the domains we own.

We'd also like to give people FTP access to their subdomain with a reasonable quota on space that way you can store images there if you want to link to them in forum posts or blog entries or whatever.

I don't know about the subdomain being on f13.net, however. schild will have to think on this and if there's any "catch" it will probably be in regards to the f13.net domain.

However, we have some other wonderful domains that I'm sure people would stab their siblings to get a subdomain on:

driveling.com
4tehwin.org
thew0rld.com
wordsarehard.cm

For those of you that have a domain name already, there's no problem associating that domain with your spanking new subdomain. We can provide you with the nameservers to point your domain to in order to make everything work automagically.

We're all about love for the users.

There would be some rules of course. Nothing illegal or obscene although immoral is pretty much par for the course when it comes to us. Or maybe that's just me. I think I'm "projecting" again.

Oh, an email address or two on your subdomain/domain shouldn't be a problem either.

Um.. sort of. A lot of the Fries ended up moving to the Euro server when it was put up, and now some of old French guilds have consolidated into some of the larger French guilds so that there aren't as many French guilds as their were, but the concentration of them in the larger guilds they became is higher.

And with the server pop drop, well.. there seems to be a lot of "weeding" going on.

driveling.com, 4tehwin.org, and thew0rld.com can be set up for a subdomain anytime.

In light of this story (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/03/31/196220&tid=217), we may be looking for an alternative to Wordpress. Yes, we're eventually (this coming week or next) going to be getting around to coming up with some f13 templates and whatnot. But now we're going to investigate other options.

Also, a number of you contacted us and didn't follow up. I'd get into details but the names are pretty evident from the last 2 pages. Anyone still interested?

I have a LiveJournal blog that I stopped using because every time I visited the site, I felt obligated to read my all my friends' blogs, and many of them like to post several times a day about what they made for dinner, how they stubbed their toe, and what the latest silly internet quiz thing is.  Despite my love of internet quizzes, all of that stuff kinda drops the signal-to-noise ratio low enough that eventually I gave up on the whole thing.  The main thing about the idea of f13-hosted blogging that appeals to me is getting away from that culture.

Of course, I'm not in charge, so post whatever the hell you want.  That is pretty much the point of a blog in the first place.

And no, I'm not mad at you, and I doubt anyone else is either.  You have to be pretty goddamn bad in this place to stand out from the herd of raging assholes.

Phew! Thanks Samwise. I needed a little validation.

Well, I don't really want to blog about dinner and nonsense like that (unless I make something really stellar like buffalo pot roast with horseradish-mashed parsnips - yum!), I was just more curious about whether or not the content would be restricted somehow.

I saw a commercial recently that they've brought back the Pizza Hut Buffalo Chicken pizza in my area. I'm not sure if this is nationwide. I plan to order one this weekend because of Haemish, who I think should do a Lewis Black type "Things I hate and here's why" blog. That pizza can be first.

Every now and then something truly awful slips through the cracks, but Haemish is there to scoop up the pieces in a segment we call, "I Suffer for Joo!"
