Title: Portable movie players that are not Physical Media based
Post by: slog on June 29, 2011, 06:03:52 AM
Hi,

so I have like 100 kids movies on my Hard drive in .AVI format.  What I would like to do is stick these onto a portable Hard Drive or something so the kid can watch movies in the Car on long drives.  Portable DVD players piss me off because who want's to deal with phyiscal media players?

I tried just having her watch them on a Netbook, but she keeps accidentally pressing buttons which stops the movie.  So I guess here is what I'm looking for

1) Can Play movies in Cars
2) Can hang from the seat in front of it
3) Plugs into a car charger
4) Can use USB sticks/Portable HD/Has some kind of internal storage.

Any Ideas?

iPad.

The problem with the IPAD is the same as a the Netbook:  she will press buttons and mess up the movie.

My buddies 2.5 year old is perfectly capable of not only not messing up the movie but selecting a new one once the old one is finished.  I don't know how old your girl is but, yeah, the iPad is a pretty freaking amazing piece of intuitive user interface design.

While it would probably work, it's a bit out of my price range.

If it is just for kids movies checkout e-bay or some such for a used iPad. My 2.5 year old can start and stop movies, launch Angry Birds, and start up Dr. Seuss books that read themselves. It's also taken a number of hard falls without a scratch. I'm sure there is an Android tablet that could serveras well, although I'm not convinced they match Apple's build quality.

I have a 500GB hard drive connected to my main tv so my daughter can pick from a few dozen films and I don't have to hunt out the right dvd.  The TV has a built in usb media player, looks like you can get similar in the UK for portable players.

The USB port lets you access MP3, JPEG and DivX files from flash drives etc.

I just picked this one at random but from my experience of the tv, you have to check out the USB supports NTFS for larger files and download the technical manual to check out what codecs come with it.

I bought one of the below for the main bedroom but ended up giving it to my father in law just for when my daughter is round there, even a 8 GB USB stick still gives her plenty to watch.

So you could look at something similar to this hooked up to any form of car tv, but you'd need an extra power supply for it.  Not saying an ipad is a bad choice, I just think they are still too expensive and likely to drop a lot.
