Title: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: luckton on June 23, 2011, 06:16:47 PM And the F2P train drives on!
http://www.develop-online.net/features/1325/Free-at-last And yes, this deserved it's own post :P Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Malakili on June 23, 2011, 06:27:38 PM I see a Team Fortress 2 Free Week on Steam right now...but I don't see any mention of a permanent switch. Doesn't mean it isn't true, but I'm slightly skeptical at the moment.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: luckton on June 23, 2011, 06:28:39 PM Go watch the Medic vid. Epic ending is epic.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Strazos on June 23, 2011, 06:37:21 PM Edit: Nevermind Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Malakili on June 23, 2011, 06:41:07 PM Go watch the Medic vid. Epic ending is epic. Fair enough. MYTH CONFIRMED. Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Strazos on June 23, 2011, 06:43:06 PM Fair enough - Valve has probably made loads of money from this game over time. I only play on 2 servers, so I don't see a problem.
Heck, they've gotten enough cash from me just with the stupid keys...I'm a sucker for gambling. Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Jobu on June 25, 2011, 11:04:14 PM The best part about free weekends and hopefully the next month or two of free to play?
The legions of noobs on every server to slaughter and pad your ego. Man, this is gonna be like release month all over again. :yahoo: Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Furiously on June 26, 2011, 03:44:08 AM The best part about free weekends and hopefully the next month or two of free to play? Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Comstar on June 26, 2011, 07:22:42 AM I was very disappointed by Meet the Medic. Didn't seem to be very funny as I expected.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: pxib on June 26, 2011, 09:10:43 AM It was at least twice as long as the other videos have been. There were some very funny moments, but they're farther apart than necessary.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: brellium on June 26, 2011, 09:17:52 AM The best part about free weekends and hopefully the next month or two of free to play? I don't need to pad my ego killing n00bs, sadly I play primarly as a sniper and a bunch of people who don't know what they're doing ends up with me dead. The legions of noobs on every server to slaughter and pad your ego. Man, this is gonna be like release month all over again. :yahoo: Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: koro on June 26, 2011, 04:25:32 PM Was only a matter of time. I've run into this so much today:
http://botchweed.com/game-news/new-team-fortress-2-plugin-blocks-free-players/ Quote Yesterday, Valve began offering their class-based multiplayer shooter Team Fortress 2 for free after four years of offering it as a paid product. At the time, Valve promised that free players would receive “exactly the same” gaming experience, with the exception of a few technical limitations on free accounts related to the game’s item system. However, in less than a day, a user-made server plugin has been created to restrict free players from joining servers altogether. The mod, when installed by a server owner, automatically kicks anyone playing the free version of Team Fortress 2. The only way to play on servers with this plugin installed is to own a premium copy of Team Fortress 2. Players who paid for the full version of the game have premium access, as well as those who have spent money on items at the in-game store. http://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=160049 Quote Are you fed up with your server full of people that don't know one end of the direct miss from the other? People that feel the need to just keep coming back after you permaban them? Or just people that haven't contributed some of their hard earned cash to your favourite war-themed hat simulator? Then you know what you need? This plugin (and SteamTools). Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Malakili on June 26, 2011, 04:27:52 PM I can imagine the frustration, especially given the amount of community servers out there that must have been full and flooded with randoms.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Strazos on June 26, 2011, 04:34:56 PM While I think they're a bunch of whining sissies...it IS their server, which they pay for, so...it's well within their rights to limit access. Sort of like the reserved slots on some servers, which will kick non-donators if the server is full and a donator joins.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Samwise on June 27, 2011, 08:21:34 AM Yeah, while it's well and good for Valve to offer the game for free, I don't think server operators should be obligated to offer their bandwidth for free. Anyone is able to run their own server if they don't like the treatment they're getting on someone else's.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: HaemishM on June 27, 2011, 09:06:27 AM
FPS twats getting all uppity about n00bs playing on their server. Really? Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Samwise on June 27, 2011, 09:11:18 AM The ability to circumvent permabans is on its own a pretty understandable reason to not want f2p players on your server.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: HaemishM on June 27, 2011, 09:16:47 AM That sounds like a bug to me.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Malakili on June 27, 2011, 10:14:26 AM That sounds like a bug to me. How so? Make a new steam account, install free TF2, play. Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: HaemishM on June 27, 2011, 11:07:09 AM Ahhh I see what you're saying. I was thinking they were evading the permaban in the same account.
Still seems like sandy vag. Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Strazos on June 27, 2011, 02:59:46 PM Surprised they don't just ban by IP.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Ingmar on June 27, 2011, 03:10:48 PM Surprised they don't just ban by IP. That often results in things like 'oops we banned the entire population of this university' and things like that, targeted banning is much much better when you can get away with it. Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Mrbloodworth on June 28, 2011, 07:47:54 AM TBH, Valve should have offered this as a setting for personally hosted servers. While increasing the farm of servers they host themselves.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Azazel on June 28, 2011, 10:07:35 PM Good call there.
Title: Re: TF2 Goes F2P Post by: Prospero on June 29, 2011, 11:22:00 AM That's why we have metamod. It's all of one click to add the premiere player mod. Valve has also added a huge number of servers as well to deal with the new players.
There's also a whole system that rolled out with the Uber update for setting up your server to be a "Quickplay" server which is opt in for server admins. Everything I've seen so far is Valve is trying to be good to their server operators. |
