Title: FEAR collection on sale
Post by: jakonovski on June 16, 2011, 12:51:33 PM
Ten bucks for all FEAR games and DLC so far. This is one of my favorite games series ever, so I'm totally buying it. Gotta get up to date for F3AR. Except if it sucks.

More games to add to my huge "I need to get around to playing this some day" list.

You can safely skip the first one, IMO, but the second one holds up well.

I'm going to just disagree with azazel on the first FEAR, simply because I think it's still good and highly playable (and damn scary, duh).

I disagree on all three points. The gameplay is largely dated FPS stuff that doesn't work well and while the atmosphere starts off creepy, but before too long becomes predictable and tedious.

I remembered you disagreeing with me on the atmosphere, but dated FPS stuff? I realize that I've more or less opted out of the last few generations of FPSes, but I'm having a hard time thinking of which parts of the game was "dated FPS stuff". I'm going to have to fire it up again later tonight just to see if I'm going to disagree with my current position.

Also, the first game has a clear Akira influence, which is enough alone to make it cool as fuck.

Moot point since $10 gets you the set. Grab it and make your own decisions then come back and support one of these guys.  :awesome_for_real:

Well, specifically the long, samey levels with little variation for extremely long periods. The typical incredibly long, incredibly linear "office building" level that just goes on and on and on and on full of empty offices that have only just been vacated, followed by a stretch of unfinished office building with walls not quite up yet etc, followed by even more finished building. Typically more modern FPS games - "more modern" going at least as far back as FEAR2 - feature more variance in levels, at least in setting and design. Though admittedly even the early CoD and MoH games featured more interesting levels and variance than FEAR1. It just feels really padded. I'm no fan of 5-hour campaigns like Blops apparently is, but I'll take 8 hours of fun over 16 where 8 of it is just tedious.

It also became really predictable after awhile. The lights flicker, you go around the corner, fight 10 guys, walk forward through empty halls for 4 minutes, then the lights flicker, you go around the corner, fight 10 guys, walk forward through empty halls for 4 minutes.. repeat ad nauseum with an occasional cutscene or secton where you crawl through some ventilation shafts, then repeat again...

The way the whole health and armour system works in it - as much as I used to be critical of regenerating armour/health, it makes as much sense as medikits in videogames anyway (ie neither really makes any) but the result is that if you play like I tend to, you're constantly backtracking to pick up that health pack you left behind you 4 rooms ago because who the fuck knows whats going to come out around the corner?'Fuck that noise. I may as well just pause for 10 seconds behind this corner and go on with, you know, actually playing the game.

There might be more, there probably are, but those are the ones that jump out to my memory right now...

Just checked the sale prices... part 2 isn't on any kind of sale, so you may as well grab the pack. $10 is worth it for the second one alone IMO, and you also get the dlc and you can give the first one a look.

Played some FEAR 2 and fuck me but the atmosphere still works so well. The opening sequence is one of the best ever. Start out with  and you can't go wrong!

Yeah, I started FEAR2 right after playing through the first one and it's DLC.

Damned good game. My only real criticism of part 2 would be that they went to the checkpoint system instead of allowing you to save anywhere and quicksave/load. They still used medikits but they seemed a bit less intrusive to gameplay then aht eones in the original.

If I didn't have so many other things lined up to play, you've nearly sold me on getting this just to have a Steam version of #1 and #2 to play as well.

Must... resist...

Well, tgr and I may disagree on the merits of the first one, but we seem to both agree that the second one is good. For $10, pick up the lot. You get the seocnd one and it's DLC missions for $10, and you also get the first one and it's 2 expansion packs included as a bonus, whether you end up playing them or not... tgr hasn't been back, so he's probably still re-playing and enjoying them.

Sadly, you can put me in the "extremely dated long, pointless, tedious, empty hallway/room levels" camp. I tried to play 1. Maybe someday I'll try 2.

tbh I've no problem with seeing why someone might think it's "empty hallway/room levels", but I don't think it's such a huge problem, i.e. it simply doesn't bother me. I enjoy how the AI flank me, but I'm starting to feel the effects of not having played an FPS game (more or less any of them) regularly for a few years, i.e. I'm rusty as fuck.

Overall, I'd still give this a passing grade, but it isn't quite as awesome as I remembered it. The most disappointing bit, however, is that whenever I remember that something is going to happen, it ruins the scare factor. Every time I forget it, though, it still manages to send chills all the way down my spine. That's my major gripe at this point, though, its replay value isn't the best. vOv

If you get scared by fear, you probably don't ever want to play amnesia. Ever.

I'm getting short bursts in Amnesia. RIght now I'm in a spot where my sanity level is "..." and there is a creature wandering around the level, things are mostly dark and I'm low on tinderboxen. Just the insanity effects alone make it stressful to play. Loving it, and wish Eternal Darkness had played more like this (and I loved that game).

In fact, Amnesia scares the living piss out of me. It's awesome, and I wish to subscribe to their RSS feed.

For FEAR1 go read a plot summary somewhere.  The game was pretty solid when it came out but it did not hold up at all.

FEAR2 is great.  It has possibly the most messed up ending of any game I've ever played.

FEAR 1 is a great laptop game, runs 60fps maxed out on my three year old POS lappy.

Picked up the collection this weekend and dumped about 2 hours into FEAR 1. I think I'll take the advice given here to just read a plot summary and move on. The shooting and level design both felt really dated. Some of things that might have been scary at one point (mutilated corpses, etc.) lost their impact since the graphics felt distractingly dated as well.
