Title: Steam Gifts (Steamgifts.com)
Post by: schild on June 13, 2011, 03:01:25 PM
Oh, you thought there might be info here? Anyone have any invite codes?

I don't quite understand what this site is.  People buy cheap Steam games and then have lotteries to give them away to strangers?

Site where you login with your Steam account and then someone steals it so they get the "gift" of your account?

I assume it's a way to give away games you have doubles of. Like if you already owned Portal when you got a free code for it with Portal 2.

This would be an interesting site if you could get around region pricing by using the gifting mechanism, plus perhaps $5 per transaction for your troubles.

Course, it would be sued into the ground - but still would be a market there.

I have HL2 and Portal, if someone happens to want them.

I wouldn't be surprised if the gifting mechanism isn't allowed to cross regions for that very reason.

I have a Portal code also that I haven't been able to give away.

Unless its changed in the past few weeks, you can cross regions with gifts.  There is an active trade on some forums for those of us in places like Australia buying gifted games off people in more normal regions, normally with $5 or so added on top for the other person's time.  And there are guides out there about using VPNs and 2 accounts to gift yourself purchases from other regions.

As long as it's not too blatant, I don't think Valve really gives too many shits about it...

EA certainly does give a shit about it, but that's not really a huge surprise, so while Valve isn't doing anything about it right now (a sale is a sale, is my personal view vOv), I wouldn't count on it being there forever.

I paid for Portal just last week, you bastards!

Are you talking about gifts, or that website? I'm talking about gifts in general.

Ah. No, I was talking about gifts across regions, although I'm not convinced Valve won't care about the website itself. It obviously has the potential to increase activity on steam, and I haven't really read up on how it works, but my initial reaction was that it would be an account harvesting mechanism. vOv

sorry, I was unclear. Gifting across regions is what I was on about.

I have a Half Life 2 to give away, if anyone wants it.

Edit: This has gone.

Somehow I skipped it.

Only TF2, Spiral Knights and Portal items are visible to other people.

Ugh that's right. You have to be mutual steam friends to see peoples games I think.

Your inventory shows in-game stuff that's tied into Steamworks. Those are the 3 games you have either played or had stuff added to externally. You can't see tradeable games. They need to surface Steam Trading a bit more.
