WHY?

What purpose does this serve for people?

Steam is a fairly social service.  You can see what your friends are playing, chat with them, join groups, coordinate games, that kind of thing.  If you're into Facebook as a social tool, and your Steam friends are mostly your real friends (as I suspect is the case for a lot of younger players), might as well link them together to let people see your vacation pictures or whatever.

I don't see the problem, personally.  I mean, 1) it's optional, and 2) it's only visible to your Steam friends.  If I linked my facebook profile to my Steam account, I think a few guys from the F13 Blood Bowl league might be able to track me down and extract vengeance for chainsawing their running back or something, but that's about it.  If that's too invasive, I don't really have to do it at all.  It's not like WoW's RealID flap where you had to sign your real name to your forum posts, or anything.

I can't find any functionality outside of finding your facebook friends on Steam. Well, except for the feature where it lets Valve snoop through your facebook data.  :why_so_serious:

I just don't understand why I would want people who aren't gamers to know what I'm playing. Or even worse, if people I know start spamming shit from shit their playing to my feed. If I have RL friends who play games, that's what the Steam friends thing is for, right?

This is half of the point of social media for a lot of people.  It's the internet equivalent of driving down the street with your windows open and your stereo at ten million decibels, because everyone will be so impressed with your choice of music.  Of course people would be interested in what I'm playing, I'm awesome, and the only reason people don't realize it is because they don't know me well enough.

edit: that probably comes off as more offensive than I intended it.  What I meant is that a lot of the point of my setting up a facebook (or whatever) account is the idea that people are interested in what I'm doing.  Be it videogames or whatever.

Yes, but you might not know they have Steam accounts and such.  The main part of this for me is the "find your Facebook friends on Steam" which a lot of services do already and it's actually pretty handy.

That said, I'm not really into the whole "post your played/did/whatever" since I don't find it particularly worthwhile content to share so I'm ignoring that part anyway.

There's also the "only having to use one single central social network" aspect for a lot of the stuff out there like this.

That reminds me, I need to block one of my facebook friends who linked is fucking PS3 account to facebook.  It automatically posts to his wall EVERY FUCKING TIME he gets a trophy, and I really couldn't give a shit.

Its Opt-In, so if somebody is that exhibitionistic more power to him.

I save the doomcalling for when those fuckers at facebook make something opt-out.

Off-topic but I'd rather block the person and the app. I find the pattern to be that if someone is annoying me with utterly retarded apps posting to facebook (Farmville, Bejeweled, or PSN) then after I block that app they will find some other app to post on their wall that I don't have blocked, and spam up my wall with. 

How could it ever be anything other than opt-in? Neither valve nor facebook are able to read your mind and acquire your log in details for the other service.

I find app blocking works well as that way you don't need to block everyone using fucking farmville broadcasts. Fuck off I don't care if you found a nail, any of you.

Your mistake is to assume that Valve or Facebook have your best interest in mind. They only want your money, and if they can fuck you in the ass for spare change and get away with it, they will not hesitate to do so.

All of this boils down to cold profit calculation - if focus group studies showed to Valve that backlash and projected loss of revenue would have been less than profit of going "opt-out" you'd all be linked to facebook by now. On a positive side, unlike Facebook, Steam business model revolves around sales and they have to (not by choice, mind you) keep you somewhat happy to keep revenue flowing.

I get that you had a bad time with Steam when it first came out, but now you're just being utterly ridiculous.

It's not what Steam does but there are certain sites that when you go to them it will attempt automatically to connect to your facebook. It's called "Instant Personalization." I think it asks for your permission before it mines your data but it at least knows you have a facebook.

I assume so, I turned it off right when they came out with it.

If it was that easy to do, why would they even ask?  They'd just be getting any data they wanted from your facebook page without even asking you.

The Facebook cookie is probably the best way, as the first two could easily link to incorrect accounts.

Here is chain of events for you:

1. You link your Steam profile to Facebook
2. You happen to play mmorpg(like Rift)/Grand Theft Auto or any other "objectionable" game.
3. Google indexes your Facebook profile, plus links all your game-related banter, including your high-visability "viability of a wizard in end-game dragon killing" thread.
3. You apply for a job or promotion
4. HR person does simple Google search, sees you play WoW-like game and very active at it
5. You don't get position/promotion

Mixing your leisure activities, especially such stigma-inducing activity as PC gaming, with your identity is fundamentally bad idea. After being a raid leader, I would certainly give a raid leader a leg up on paper. In the interview I would determine if they were THAT type of leader.

Depending on his profession, the concerns can definitely be legitimate.  I think he's gone a bit over the top with the doomsday scenario of someday steam connects to facebook and your professional life falls apart, but there are definitely some professions out there where gaming is very looked down upon.

Sure. I personally don't think it's the kind of thing to be flaunting on Facebook, and I'm lucky to be in an unusual situation where the gaming thing is helping my career, but even in situations where it's a negative, I'm not sure that it's quite on a par with being a convicted rapist.

If you do link your FB profile to Steam for the ticket, you can always then deny access to Steam from FB straight away. Nothing gets posted from what I can see.

I had it linked for a day or 2 and it didnt actually seem to do anything other than tell you which of your Facebook friends were also on Steam [and had linked to their Facebook]
