Title: Prey II

E3 2011 Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCEAdr8_VvE

OK, color me intrigued based off the trailer. At least it gave an idea of game mechanics in it.

I saw no resemblance of Prey in any of that.  Granted, it has been a few years since I played the first.

Where's the shaman function?  It looks like humans are now part of a galactic operation?  Where's the Blue Oyster Cult?  Where's the mind-bending, gravity-defying gameplay?

Not knocking it, but it is just a really weird idea.  Its not like the Prey brand name was all that established to begin with, though I had fun with it and beat it.  Odd.

If I had to guess, it's more Cowboy than Indian this time around.

The portal technology was Prey's big thing but Portal has made it seem obsolete and not new, so I think they are attempting to make the Prey universe more viable for I.P. exploitation by increasing the breadth of available stuff. It looks more like Mass Effect meets Prey than Prey.

I have heard the game described as Mass Effect meets Blade Runner in an open world with space cowboys. Or Red Dead Redemption in space.

All of those sound awesome.

Ok, yeah, I'd like me some more of that, please and thank you.

Though, if they're going to do such a paradigm shift from the original game, why not give it a newer title?  The 5 people that played Prey 1 will get confused.  :awesome_for_real:

I dunno, visually if they're going for a Wild West theme, I think it could do well with less Mass Effect and more Firefly.  If you subtract that song, it looks like Generic Badass Surly Space Marine shooter number ten million and one.  You can't take Metroid and turn it into a Western by playing Johnny Cash over it.

Which isn't to say that the game will suck, but I'm skeptical of this setting being RDR in space.

I'll bet if Rockstar was actually doing RDR in space you wouldn't have a problem.  :oh_i_see:

You say that like it's unreasonable to raise or lower your expectations based on the developer.

I just wanted to say I think I am one of the few people I know who played through the entire first Prey, and enjoyed the whole thing.

Interview says "Totally open world, narrative is linear.  You don't like a quest, move on."  Also, Tommy is part of the game and "is crucial".  Very, interesting.

Sounds good, but it still doesn't sound Prey. I'm really not sure why they even bothered using the IP, as it's not exactly a big name title. But that could be a good thing, I suppose, if it means they're actually doing some interesting evolution of the idea and setting, and not just pumping out Generic Namedrop Sequel 172.

Mass Effect meets Blade Runner seems totally apt. I was able to witness the Prey II demonstration at E3. Gun-play seems solid but lacked a visceral quality to it. I didn't really "feel" the guns, but I wasn't the one playing. They have first-person platforming elements, which will be interesting to see how that translates to the final product. I was thinking Brink with how easy it was to vault over cover and run forward, I was thinking Mirror's Edge as well... I have mixed feelings until I see how it handles but it looked smooth.

I'm glad Tommy's in it. They do make some connections to the first title but it's been so long since Prey 1 that I would need a refresher on critical plot elements, like a plane crash that your main character for the second game was in the middle of.

I didn't get enough information that would make me confident in the other non-core game systems to know how compelling it will be. They did show some interesting solutions to problems -- you can be a good cop or a bad cop. One particular mention was getting information for a bounty -- you could pay the guy, or you could blow away his bodyguard and hold him at gunpoint for it. In fact, your weapon is holstered most of the time because they felt your character would look like he was intimidating everyone he met, so they made pulling the gun (but not shooting) a mechanic, which I thought was nice.

No multiplayer mention, and I hope they aren't focusing on it since that can distract from single player.

I hope the red dead redemption in space example extends to the multiplayer.

I don't think RDR in space is as fitting a descriptor from what I saw. RDR was... very special.

Add me to the list of people that loved the first Prey.  This looks like an entirely different kind of awesome.

(First Impressions)

Movement like Brink, sci-fi setting sandbox, moral choice system, and coming out on PC...

It's tempting enough that now I wish I could go back and buy the first one, but I guess it's not on Steam.

http://www.direct2drive.co.uk/2373/product/Buy-Prey-Download if D2D will do. No DRM as far as I can tell. With lol-azz-rape DRM.

That's weird, I bought it on Steam and still own it, but there's no more store page for it.  I guess they had a finite number of licenses of them available and sold out?

It's still loaded on my PC, I've upgraded the machine three times since that, so it may not play... Still, I played the shit out that game.
