Title: So Nintendo is following up the Wii with a new console next year....
Post by: CmdrSlack on April 25, 2011, 07:14:20 AM
http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/gaming.gadgets/04/25/nintendo.wii.successor/?hpt=C2

I'm really not quite sure what to think about this. There's no details yet, so unless they've been working on this for a year or two, will it just be a re-packaged Wii with closer-to-next-gen hardware?

Maybe Ninty is really out of touch and this is just them trying to stick with the 5 year cycle for consoles no matter what.

Rumors:
Quote
Controller
- 6" touchscreen, not HD, not multitouch
- D-Pad, L, R, two triggers, others
- 'Front-facing camera'
- A sensor roughly analagous to the Wii sensor bar is incorporated in the controller - i.e. some kind of IR beacons/transmitters. Purpose isn't clear.

Specs
- Custom triple-core PowerPC
- AMD/ATI GPU. 'Probably' derived from R700 series.
- RAM unknown
- Developer quotes: graphics capabilities "roughly equal to those of the Xbox 360", performance "over the Xbox 360, but just a notch"

Rumored controller mock-up:

Lies.  Why would Nintendo make a powerful console?

That's a bit of a radical departure from the current Wiimotes. I don't think its real.

Because I would buy one!  :drill:

Explain!

Honestly they had to do something since Zelda is the only decent upcoming Wii game left; hopefully whatever they make has a normal enough controller that the big name 3rd party titles can release on it and and play as they do on Xbox/PS3.

Yay another system that won't have any good games for it!

Looking forward to the following lazy ports:

Mario Kart Wii HD
Metroid Prime HD
Mario Galaxy HD
New Super Mario Bros HD
Ever Mario sports game...HD!
Mario Party HD

And so on.....god I hat Nintendo

I have more Wii games than PS3 games. It depends on what you like, Nintendo is a very different platform than the others.

Example, I think I have every harvest moon ever on that Wii.

Those rumors are tied to a system called "Project Cafe".

And someone found this header on Nintendo's WarioWorld dev site.

So the basic gist Nix posted up there could be correct.

Ditto here.  Though in large part I blame the shitty RPGs on the PS3 for that.  If I wanted RPGs where 2d animation boxes have conversations at each other, I'd buy them for my DS, not waste the processing power of the PS3 on them (not to mention the extra expense.)

Oh, don't get me wrong, the Ps3 games are mostly mine, the Wii games are the ladies. However I do play them too. I'm just saying the catalogs are vastly different.

Heh, I own games on both, but yeah the bulk of the Wii games are the kids.

After the searing disappointment that the Wii became about a year after release, I find I don't really give a fuck. Virtual Console games? Virtually abandoned. Actual games that weren't wiggle shovelware? About 2-3 a year? Third party support? Barely on life support.

Fuck Nintendo in their tiny money-filled earholes.

They talking any backwards compatibility on this thing?

The only reason I'd buy one of these is on the off chance it has a new (and good, don't forget that) Metroid and maybe Fire Emblem. That gets my interest. If you can play the Metroid (first one) and Fire Emblem games that came out on the Wii (still a stupid name), then I might part with cash. Maybe. It'd be nice if some other stuff that was actually interesting came out on it as well, but seeing as this is Nintendo, that is asking too much.

Doubt it'll sell Wii numbers after all the casuals bought one, messed about with Wii Sports then shoved it under the TV to collect dust.

I can't underestimate the ability of normals to get frothy about stupid shit.

Just to play along, something looking like a crap iPad with a IR sensor and the dev name "cafe" obviously means Nintendo is bringing themselves into the networking age by having people bring around oversized handhelds to play together, like Pokemon.  I mean, really, the Wii just isn't portable enough.  The GameCube had a handle but would have needed a car battery to play on a train.  The Wii doesn't have a handle or a battery.  The peanut-butter-and-chocolate solution to this is to make a new GBA that can download WiiWare and VC games if you happen to be inside a GameStop or a McDonald's McCafe, after which you can sit in the shade facing your opponent and do pokemon battles.

I highly doubt that touch controller is real.  It would be enormously expensive that it wouldn't make sense for an in person social console (like the Wii is).  Remember, Nintendo has to make a profit on each console sold, they don't sell them for a loss like Sony/Microsoft does.

I'm inclined to agree in general, but that's not to say they couldn't do both kinds of controllers on the same system.

Unless they don't have a Zelda game.

This. If the Wii was a slightly more powerful Gamecube, then the WiiS360 will be a slightly more powerful Wii with 3D, twitch, and a Duke Nukem exclusive.

Hm. New Nintendo console, slightly more powerful than the 360. Colour me indifferent - I've already got a 360/PS3/PC for real games, a Kinect for "move my boo-tay games" aka gathering dust since we don't have space to use it properly) and a Wii which mostly gathers dust along with a pile of games for it which also gather dust. Also have a near-complete indifference to portable and mobile games, and already have a DS and iPhone if I ever travel and need some portable gaming or have a head injury which makes me give a shit about portables otherwise. I also don't much care for Mario/Zelda/Metroid.

I reckon I've got my bases covered, there. No need for Ninty's latest whatever.

Could be a sign that Nintendo wants to move against the iPad / apps gaming market and don't think the DS can cope in that area.

Of course, this would require Nintendo to start caring about third party and independent developers, which hasn't happened yet.

I do not. I have access to a Wii, though. I just don't really buy the "motion" stuff. I liked the gamecube, and I own that. I love that controller btw.

I'd be surprised if motion went away.  That would eliminate any backward compatibility as well as any potential link to the WiiWare store.  I'll not completely disbelieve the idea of a third and unrelated game platform, though.  Anything's possible when you're Shigeru Miyamoto.

Everyone I know with a Wii who wasn't a gamer before it came out ONLY has WiiSports because that's literally all they like/care about.

Yes, they paid $250 to play Wii Bowling every once in a while with family members. Much like I paid $250 to play Smash Brothers Brawl.

Then I stopped playing Brawl and started playing Melee again with my friends because we all thought Brawl kinda sucked.

So basically I paid $250 for a non-cubey gamecube.

I already owned a gamecube.

I'm a cunt.

Yep, my folks played Wii bowling at our house and *had* to have it.  They bought about three games that were all shovelware and never spent another nickel on the system.  I'd be surprised if they bought into a game system again because they felt burnt a bit by the games they bought.

Your average Wii buyer isn't checking ratings or forums to see how a game is.  I suspect my folks won't be the only ones that won't buy in the next generation because Nintendo allowed anyone and everyone to release games on their system.

I played one at Best Buy, Street Fighter and Pilotwings.  SF was easier to play in 2d and Pilotwings was neat for about 5 minutes in 3d.  Then the shiny wore off and I realized that I'm not going to play anything in 3d anyways because I get mild headaches from it.  Nintendo has been all gimmick lately since R.O.B..

I've read that the Wii is the first platform in history where game ratings and sales don't have a significant positive correlation.

Regardless, Nintendo still 'won' this round of the console wars (the Kinect won't pull the Xbox 360 to the lead, but it sets up an interesting next gen battle) and showed that if you can release an affordable console with a good hook, you will get a lot of people to buy it. Key thing: the Wii reduced game complexity a whole heap. Anyone can pick up a Wiimote and get some idea of what it does; other console controllers are viewed as too difficult / complex.

The racing games both look much better in 3D than SF, even though SF is the major selling point (from a marketing perspective) of the system.

Post by: Rendakor on April 28, 2011, 12:42:56 AM
That's why I bought one Marg; I've played my DS much more than my PS3 and my 360 combined. The price tag was pretty steep and the lack of a big name, first party title is a little weak but I know they'll support it well. Besides, 3D is a much less annoying gimmick than waggle or touch screen.

An overpriced handheld with the gimmick of 3D added? Oh and it pretty much just seems like an overpriced iteration of a system that has already had too many releases with that brand name as it is? I imagine to most people (you know, fucking idiots), the 3DS sounds a lot like "this is the 3rd version of the console" more than "WOW 3D YOU BUY FUCKITY FUCK BLOW YOU MIND!"

Without some serious marketing, a dirt cheap (like $200) price tag or some big time games available at release, I don't see the Wii2 doing diddly squat with the market we have now.

Can we stop putting 3D on things, tech producers? It's not working for TV and it won't work here. I'm not going to wear retarded looking glasses to watch sports or play games, and no ESPN, I don't give a shit that you are broadcasting in 3D. This is not like HD. You can't sell me on this. Whatever happened to holograms? That shit was supposed to revolutionize entertainment when I was growing up... that and the flying car.

You know I ask out of pure curiosity but why do you use the flying car comment?   We could make a fully functional one as early as the 70's.  Useful Holograms we can't do.    Fusion power we can't do.   There are a lot of better examples I can think of.

Also Pokemon is terrible and you shouldn't play it.
