Title: As you may have noticed...
Post by: Shockeye on February 06, 2005, 11:58:36 PM
We have changed forum software. Our new software is Simple Machines Forum 1.01 and it offers a butt-load of advantages over phpBB. We have tried to copy the look of the previous forum while adding a number of new features. Go ahead and poke it with a stick and see where it breaks. Let us know if you run into any problems.

It's pretty.

The first thing everyone is going to want to do is hit "mark as read" on the frontpage near the bottom right. It's an icon, and as you can see, your old cookies didn't carry over, so at the moment everything is "new." We'll be incorporating icons for new stuff asap so you don't have to look for the "new" icon next to stuff.

We're also going to be working on an even more in depth theme than this one including all new icons and sleek shit. Basically, we had to make the move to SMF. It's faster, more robust, and most importantly - can handle a heavy load of users without choking.

Feedback, now!

Can you eliminate the line between every thread?  It's really distracting.

Also, I had to reset my timezone; it defaulted to -3 for some reason. (Edit: Okay, so that was right.  Instead of setting your timezone relative to GMT, you set it relative to the message board time, which seems to be Eastern.  That's counter-intuitive but I assume you can't do anything about tht.)

I see you disabled the
tag.

*squints*

It would be possible to use the previous font and size?

The black is killing me. With all the lines everywhere, even more irritating on the eyes than the last one.

Our new software is Simple Machines Forum 1.01 and it offers a butt-load of advantages over phpBB.

Does that mean we get to do the banpoll again?

telewhat?

Oooh, shadow...?

The quick brown fox does something or other.

I don't like it.

Too many lines.
The text arrangement on the forum selection page seems jumbled.
Many of the buttons are too small.
On my screen, Shockeye's avatar has a slider bar along the bottom, for shit's sake.

In response, I expect no one will care and nothing will happen.

Okay, something isn't right.  When I bring up the top-level forum view, it correctly shows me which boards have new posts in them, but when I open a new window on one of the board links, the threads that have new posts in them are marked with a little "New" button, but not a checkmark.

Wow, that's a whole lot of new functionality and icons all over the place.  Looks nice but I also liked the clean, simple look from before.

The first time I logged in I was sent to a Forbidden access error page.  I logged out and back in and it hasn't happened since, probably just a fluke.

I don't remember if I had the permission to make a poll before, we do now.
I don't like the show ip icon in every single post, I don't think non-admins need to see that and it's worrisome that one mistake by an admin with the permissions could expose everyone's ip to the world.
Is there an ignore user function in this anywhere?
Most importantly what is the Den of Iniquity for?  :-)

This is just a check to see if I can make a smiley without it going to an icon :).  Oh, never mind the additional options dropdown has a don't use smileys checkbox.

Edit: I don't think I should have been able to change the message icon to that thumbs up either, do all those icons turn yellow for unread posts?

Title: Re: As you may have noticed...
Post by: Paelos on February 07, 2005, 07:00:26 AM
The fonts are a bit small on standard, and as mentioned before there are way too many lines. If there is a way to turn off the subject header on every post, I think that would go a long way to combatting the jumble.

The New Posts graphic shows up fine on the forum listing, but when I enter a particular forum, the New Posts graphics does not show next to the threads that have been replied to since I last checked. I cleared all cookies from my browser, accepted the new ones. I even did the Mark All Read thing. Any ideas?

Like I said, there's a little Icon that says "New" after a thread name, but the checkbox doesn't seem to be working inside forums.

There is an ignore user function but it has been disabled.

I dislike the small, dark [new] after threads with new posts. I like a big bright shiny something-or-other to direct me to new posts.

Also... quoting someone else's post isn't set off nearly as well as it was in the old software.  It doesn't have a different background, it's not indented at all, it's just really hard to tell where the quote ends and the new text begins.

Doesn't do nested quotes either. I had clicked Quote on the previous post.

I have to agree that quotes are much harder to see now. Other than that it's just getting used to little changes.

Title: Re: As you may have noticed...
Post by: Alkiera on February 07, 2005, 08:26:19 AM
Hrm.  There does appear to be a box now, it's just so close to the normal background color it's hard to discern.  Make it a bit lighter, and intented, and it's be golden.  Oh, and fix that non-nesting quotes thing from the quote button.  Needs to quote the whole message...

Alkiera

Odd.  When I hit submit on this the first time, it didn't go thru... but reported an 'error' indicating that someone else had posted since I hit the reply button, and that I might want to review the thread at the bottom of the page first before hitting submit... I scrolled down and saw Riggs' post, which hadn't been there before.

Cute.

Yep, the threads seem much longer than they are due to all of the junk between posts.

Maybe it's the new software, but it just feels...wrong.

Perhaps it takes getting used to, but I second all the stuff above re: look and feel.  Oh yeah, that "insert flash" function just seems grieftastic.

Nested quotes are working. Not sure what you jackals are doing wrong.

Also, the little checkboxes showing new messages are back in.

Flash is also turned off, although only an admin could actually add flash before.

Ok, I see that nested quotes are ugly as sin. Give me a minute or two.

Heh, got me trying to foist off specifics on the posts above.   :-D

It's all of the lines man.  And maybe the layout a bit too...so many grey and black lines and thin headers and whatnot.  The posts just seem farther apart, which causes some feeling of "wow there's a lot of stuff between the content."  It makes me wish I had a screen cap of the phpBB forums to put next to the current forum look so I could be more specific.  It could just be similar to the disorientation I feel when going from my contacts to my glasses or vice versa.

Well, the title isn't doing too much because of the icons on the right. If I remove the title info the space would still be there due to the icons.

But it's still drawing attention to the title text, you know?  I think it would look a lot "cleaner" without it, regardless of whether or not it actually frees up any vertical space.

Almost all the stuff you people are complaining about, PHPBB did as well. And the old forums had more black.

Did everyone wake up with a little sand in a few select crevices or something?

Thank god someone noticed it!

I'll be updating it with frontpage news each day. So you regular lazy assholes don't have to visit the frontpage. We'll see if we can get links working in there as well. I suspect these smilies will last a total of 1 day before I get really fucking angry at them.

As you may have noticed there's a little arrow button (shown in picture) near the top bar. Pushing it will make the header disappear. Your cookie remembers this. Everything under it will still update, but it provides a much cleaner look while browsing.

I will, however, be updating news - so you may want to check it a couple times a day. Also, the easiest way to access private messages is up in that area.

How about a small section on the front page with notable offerings from the forums? TWoP does it, and I think it helps guide new people to the forums and gives them an idea of what they are in for. Think of it as a sig quote on steroids.

Title: Re: As you may have noticed...
Post by: HRose on February 07, 2005, 03:42:23 PM
The fonts, they are the biggest problem. You should increase the size and use the bold tag in the thread listing. As per old layout.

Title: Re: As you may have noticed...
Post by: Trippy on February 07, 2005, 03:58:51 PM
I prefer the old text font as well. And could you also get rid of the link underlining?

The smileys look like they've been anti-aliased against a different color background so they have fringe around them which make them look "hairy". You may want to redo the anti-aliasing or get rid of it entirely given you have two different text background colors (4 if you count the quoting) so it'll never look quite right.

Also, the phpBB list code didn't translate properly into the new form as you can see here:

http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=2010.70#msg55021

or maybe I made my lists in a non-standard fashion in which case I can edit my posts manually.

And I'll add my usual request here which is to copy the drop down forum navigator menu to top of the page as well.

Would it be possible to put "f13" back in as the prefix to the forum names in the page titles? E.g. right now I see "World of Warcraft" as the page title instead of something like "f13 - World of Warcraft" and it's confusing me since I have other pages open with similar titles.

Ya know, if you're gonna do the smilies thing... why not go all the way?  There are a few from this site (http://www.buzzlife.com/forums/misc.php?do=showsmilies) that you could grab and implement.

Some that might actually be worth having here (imo) are:

But, these not so much....

Now you've done it.  Schild really will disable our paltry collection of smilies now.  You bastard!

Okay, this is starting to piss me off. The "Return to this topic." checkbox doesn't stay checked and isn't remembered.

The Xbox live forum is now a child board of PC/Console Gaming.

We now have a dedicated board for thew0rld.com game servers. The Half-Life 2 DM server will be running later tonight as soon as I get the game installed on my machine to test it.

For those of you that think bold white on black is hard to read.

Check this out: http://404gaming.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=40

Those people got funding for an MMOG too.

Yes. It's in your profile settings. Look and Feel options. Set it there for always returning to topic.

If it doesn't work, the problem is you because it works fine for me at home and at work and with various other accounts for testing.
