Title: Mafia 2 on sale
Post by: Ginaz on March 08, 2011, 04:16:31 PM
Mafia 2 and the digital deluxe edition or both on sale right now for $7.50 and $10, respectively.  A guy I work with raves about this game and I enjoyed the 1st game but I've seen some mixed reviews.  Still, I think for $7.50 it'll be worth it.

I got halfway through mafia 2, but the problem is that it's "Driving around town: The game". So much time is spent driving from place to place, albeit while your passenger chatters away, but I ended up getting really tired of it.

I'm the Mafia fanboy here. If you want to know about the game, check out the debate here (http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=20285.0). Azazel and I go back and forth on it a bit, and Jeff K says some dumb stuff.  :why_so_serious:

For $7.50 I think I could give "driving around town: the game" a shot.  I still remember playing GTA3 for the first time and carefully obeying traffic laws because I thought I'd get pulled over if I ran red lights, and how disappointed I was when I found out that the game didn't care.  Mafia might be right up my alley.

The game doesn't seem to care about some traffic violations.  You can weave through traffic and even run red lights without a problem - although, curiously, your passenger will comment on running the red light, but the police never chased me for it.  Speeding is the big no-no though.  Also bumping into another car leads to them going after you for hit-and-run.

I liked the game and I liked the story, though I doubt I would be interested in replaying it, hence I'm passing on this sale (I rented it on 360).

That actually doesn't sound tremendously different from RDR, maybe I will give this a shot. I guess it will probably be on sale again sometime when I have more free time though.

As Koyasha says, this game is FAR looser about traffic laws compared to the original (which was totally hardcore about both lights and speed). Sometimes the cops would let me slide on running lights, sometimes they'd pursue. Sometimes I could go ten over, sometimes I couldn't. A bump always lit up the cops, though.

Also, the 'driving around town' part was enjoyable for me, the music tracks are great. The game is just long enough and the tracks just varied enough that you can enjoy them without getting tired of them, unlike say, Fallout:NV. I probably own at least half the tracks they licensed, though

For $7.50 or $10, I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending "driving around town: the game".  :awesome_for_real:

If you haven't got Mafia 1, and you've only got room for one of them and aren't as fussy on graphics as you are on gameplay, then I'd suggest getting mafia 1 instead of mafia 2, though.

I'd agree with that, though a lot of people had trouble with the difficulty level in the original. Personally, the race mission was one of my favorites.

I hated that mission. I don't think I've ever raged so much at a section of a game.

If the driving physics had been better and more predictable (and I didn't have to steer with a damn keyboard) then I'd probably be loving the shit out of that mission. As it was it was something to power through and get over with.

I'm currently stuck on the mission where I blow up a hotel and have to escape via the rooftops into the church. I keep having to restart because I only had 31 health when I got there, but that's not as annoying as the mission where I had to beat up the gang that was bothering the woman we're banging.

I'll shoot with a controller before I'll drive with a keyboard. Though I think back then I had both set up, I'd grab the controller when I jumped in a car and drop it when I got out. Also played GTA:VC that way, iirc. GTA:SA's lockon worked much better and since then I'm all controller. Wished for the KBAM a few times in shootouts in Mafia 2 (I played on hard), but with cover and the (goddamned) aim helper it worked out ok.

After playing three GTA games on the PC with KB+M, I actually had a harder time driving with the controller in GTA4 on the PS3.

Ditto, I suck at driving with a controller. Keyboard is way easier for me.

Should install a left and right button in your car. Silly analog steering wheel

Better make sure everyone have a button interface for their legs, don't want to give anyone an unfair advantage.

If you know of any openings, let me know.

Actually, I want to move into Iain's neighborhood, it's pretty amazing. Even with the crazy parades (or especially so).
