Title: Alternatives to the PS3's sixaxis or dualshock controllers?
Post by: Jeff Kelly on February 18, 2011, 06:24:51 AM
I own both a PS3 and XBox 360. I never particularly liked the sixaxis but only after buying a 360 do I know just how much the sixaxis does suck in comparison

I despise the sixaxis so much now that I'd rather play on the 360 even though I own a particular game on the PS3.

Ideally I'd like to use the 360 Controller on the PS3 (buttons are the same) which as far as I know doesn't work not even with third party help.

So are there alternatives to the sixaxis out there that suck less?

I asked this once and was highly dissatisfied with the lack of response.

I haven't used any of these but you can search up some reviews somewhere:

http://www.madcatz.com/productinfo.asp?page=347&GSProd=4711&GSCat=130&CategoryImg=PS3_Controllers

I know that the madcatz pads are considered functional by the FGC.

If you didn't care about the triggers (which for me is why the ps3 pad is fucking worthless, the shoulder buttons are a joke).

http://stores.shophoriusa.com/-strse-25/PlayStation-3-HORI-PAD/Detail.bok  <-- that company makes quality arcade sticks so maybe this is good.

Here's a 13 page thread on the subject that isn't too out of date.

I have the exact opposite problem; when I owned a 360 I hated playing it because the controller (specifically the awkwardly placed analog sticks) never felt natural compared to the Playstation controller which I've been comfortably using for three generations.

As I said I only realised it when I used the 360 controller which is really great except for the D-Pad.

The PS3 controller is too light, too small, the analog sticks have too much tolerance and I'm rather fond of the asymetrical placement of the analog sticks on the 360 controller. Also the trigger buttons are much worse. Plus replacable batteries.

If I could use the 360 controller on the PS3 I would.

The 360 controller is also ass, that is one of the worst dpads ever made. But the triggers on the ps3 controller esp the L2/R2 are essentially useless.

I more or less have the same issue. I'm more used to, and also strongly prefer the 360's controller. I'd use it on the PS3 if I could, and probably play more PS3 games. Which is interesting, because I felt the exact same way about the PS2/XBox1 controllers, except I wanted to use the PS2 controllers since the original XBox controllers were arse. I even bought an adaptor.

I do remember having a deep hatred of the controllers for the original XBOX; I never found the Playstation controllers too bad by comparison, and my preference has stuck ever since.

In all my experience I have never seen a third-party controller which isn't complete arse though

Ideally, for me, I would like a controller which was basically the Sixaxis with 360 triggers instead of L2/R2.  Apparently some people like the "hat switch" dpad, but being an actual gamer I prefer the discrete buttons.  In any event, a mix-n-match device would be great.

I found that these snap-on trigger extensions (http://www.amazon.com/PS3-Dual-Triggers-Playstation-3/dp/B001IAOEXU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298141001&sr=8-1) made the L2/R2 buttons on the Sixaxis/DS3 much better for me.

That's brilliant, although it's a shame they do not do them by default.
