Title: Bulletstorm
Post by: Evildrider on February 10, 2011, 06:18:46 PM
Soo never really heard of this game til all the "its the evilest game ever news".  Anyone have any word on it?  It actually looks interesting with the whole "skill shot" idea behind it.

Seems all very gears-of-war-esque

Not that that is a bad thing; but I guess the media always need a moral punching bag.

edit:
This game looks pretty un-serious, and possibly quite fun in fact (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HfCqw_8iKo&feature=relmfu)  :why_so_serious:

The aesthetics are like Gears, but the gameplay isn't even close. By which I mean it looks like fun. :why_so_serious:

The gameplay looks like Unreal Tournament. Which makes sense as its an Epic game. I think it looks fantastic. A nice change from all the realistic shooters like CoD and Battlefield.

I am amped for this and will be getting it for sure. I just wish they had it on steam.

Demo has been available on PS3 and 360 for a couple weeks now I think.  The lack of a PC demo leaves me a little wary of the PC version.  The game has gotten some decent buzz, although mostly the conversation tends to stay focused on the Skillshot system which awards you points based on how creatively you kill your enemies.  Seems like a fun game, but not something I'd buy.  Also, on the PS3 it's going up against Killzone 3 which is being released on the same day, while the 360 version gets early access to the Gears 3 beta.  Not sure what the multiplayer is like in this game, but I expect it to only have a decent amount of people playing on the 360.

Game is a lot of fun, and a refreshing change from your typical serious-business FPS.

It fondly reminds me of games like Rise of the Triad in the variety of ways people can be killed and whatnot. It's not a hard game per se (you are deliberately the most badass thing on the map, and could ordinarily run and gun the whole mission with ease), the challenge comes from an arcade-style points system. Killing people is relatively easy, killing them in a way that generates a high score is not.

Nothing like Gears of War at all.

This is from the 360 demo, btw.

I read something about this, ages ago. Apparently they're a Croatian or Polish dev house, they had a demo and Epic took them under their wing/bought them out/brought them in along with their game.

People Can Fly made Painkiller back in 2004. Is it really that unknown? That makes me sad, because it was a very unique and awesome shooter.

Edit:
That is to say, it's pretty apparent given their history what they're going for.

Most people probably only know it as the game with the cinematic that Yahtzee made into that PUFFERFISH video.

Nah, I don't think so, Painkiller was hyped and talked about everywhere back in the day. I'd say they are pretty well know. People might have forgotten they were behind Painkiller, but people haven't forgotten Painkiller itself.

He also gave it a blow job in a full review.

I want to say Penny Arcade did some comics for it too?

Indeedio. (http://www.penny-arcade.com/presents/painkiller/)

Anyway, after Painkiller I'm prepared to cut them quite a bit slack for the fairly generic trailers.

Ah yes, Painkiller.
I bought it years before Yahtzee gave it a blowjob. I found it a bit meh and boring. I tried it again after his review, just to see if I missed anything, but found it the same. Personal opinions and all that.

I've seen some videos of the game and it looks decent.  My feeling is "wait for Steam sale," but I think I'll pick it up eventually.

The environment detail on the PS3 demo is gorgeous. I'm still leaning towards Killzone 3, but I can see myself flipping at the last moment for this.

I won't get it on release, but when it hits $35 or so from the UK, I'll be all over it. If it's got some kind of amazing co-op, I'll grab two on 360.

If Steam has it for a good price on PC, I might get it there as well.

Either that or your XBOX Live account will work. Unless they're the same thing for you.

Games for Windows Live means clumsy implementation and an ass backwards interface that adds extra steps just to do something simple. If you want me to try something new, you're going to have to make it as accessible and easy as possible. Sorry.

"Poop passage" jokes makes everyone feel old.

The kills for high scores gameplay reminds me strongly of the Wii's MadWorld. This brief comparison (http://www.bitmob.com/articles/bulletstorm-and-madworld-a-match-made-in-hell) echos my thoughts. MadWorld clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2MYPmbgrI0).

I cannot stop seeing the main character as Jack Black.

edit: took a stab at multiplayer. While fun.. people don't GET how this game works, and it's a multiplayer mode where someone not getting it messes everything up. A lot like AC2's multi: someone just running around spamming low point kills is doing it wrong.

Title: Re: Bulletstorm
Post by: Tarami on March 01, 2011, 05:00:34 PM
Yeah. I found it... amusing and ironic how while they've been hyping the whole "kill with skill" thing, they've removed every goddamn shred of classic FPS skill. You can't even JUMP for Christ's sake. When I was supposed (you know, in that "you have five seconds to comply, or we'll make you start over from the checkpoint ten seconds back!"-way) to jump off a platform I couldn't even walk off the edge, I had to walk up to it and press "R" to... interact with the edge or something. That was about the point I gave back the controls.

And it's a terribly shitty console port when played on PC.

I thought you were good guys, People Can Fly. I really did.

Wait? What? No Jump? Press X to interact by Jumping?

paging Tgr and Consolitis in 3.. 2.. 1..

Title: Re: Bulletstorm
Post by: Tarami on March 01, 2011, 07:11:52 PM
No, no jumping. There are hotspots you can interact with to jump somewhere specific (down a hole et c.) but you can't jump unless the game needs you to. Nor can you vault over things in general, or walk off edges or fall off cliffs. Ladders you've climbed down you can't climb back up. Et cetera. If they had figured out a way to stop you from turning around, I'm sure it would have been implemented.

You can slide though, like your pants were made out of Crisco. Kinda fun, but lacks utility in terms of maneuverability. Just don't slide too far ahead, if you get beyond a given point you're insta-killed.

Basically you run through a pretty corridor and follow instructions, like a single, long quicktime event.

That's sorta the impression I got from the gameplay trailer I saw, but you put it in words better than I could.  All I could think was that it looked really console-y somehow but I couldn't figure out how.

Don't need to, everyone else is doing that job for me without using that specific word.

I fell off the buyers list the instant its steam store page said windows live, looks like the only thing it even has going for it (from my POV) is "hey, dicktits" etc. Oh well, back to arena. vOv

Yes. While you in theory can run past all the mobs that spawn, every combat section has a hard line you cannot cross or you will be insta-killed. It's basically an invisible wall that kills you, to stop you from progressing without clearing out all mobs.

Just mucked about with the demo on 360, which I must have downloaded when it first became available, since I'd forgotten I already had it.

I had been hyped for this game a few weeks ago. After playing the demo, and completely aside from all the shit being slung about the game in this thread, this game is shit. It looks good for what it is, albeit like every other Unreal Engine game, ever. A bit busy, maybe. But really, gameplay is where it's at. The lack of jump button wasn't that bad or even noticable in practice, since it's just context-sensitive leaps over chest-high barriers. Nor did I see the "run too far - die" invisible barriers. Even the "Tough guy for 14-year-olds" theme didn't break it for me.

The game was simply shit. Not fun to play as a shooter. Too concerned with being Scorpion's long-lost half-brother, saying "Get over here!" sinking in the slipper, and shooting in 3 seconds of slow-mo. I just found it to be an overly-busy but poor shooter. I don't even hate console shooters. But my god, do not buy this on PC! It's clearly a heavily console-centric game, and not fun at that. I can't imagine how appalling this would be on PC. Tgr will visit you in your sleep.
