Title: Rango
Post by: ghost on February 07, 2011, 02:01:34 PM

I'm pretty excited about this.  I like Johnny Depp and putting him in a cool three amigos type setting should be funny.  It will be interesting to see what he's like in a non-Tim Burton animated film.

This also has an interesting production method for modern animation. They blocked, rehearsed, and acted the entire film on video with simple props and sets and then went through and copied all the performances and interactions as talking animal charicatures. It'll be interesting to see if the experiment bears fruit.

Hey, you can't go wrong with an owl mariachi band.

This seems to have a little "Kill Bill" feel to it.  I'm not sure it will be at all appropriate for children.

This movie was a great comedy.  Lots of little references to Depp's old movies and westerns in general. (Look for the cameo of Depp as another character early on.)

I got lots of laughs and a few "wait, wha?" moments and felt it was worth the cash (well, ok Gift Card in my case, but still.)  Like any good flick there's plenty for the adults as well as the cute animal story for the kids.

The main plot has a nice tie-in to a reality-based eco. message but only if you know the story of Las Vegas.  Most will just brush it off or not realize what happened.

The Spirit of the West was  and the Don Quixote armadillo was.. interesting.

Raoul Duke, perchance?   :awesome_for_real:

Kid friendly at all?

My 6 year old saw it with his cousins and grandma with apparently no ill-effects. He is usually rather sensitive to intensity in movies too.   He said he liked it but my MIL said it was incomprehensible (although given who she is that is probably an endorsement).

Indeed!

Totally Kid Friendly, Snake.  It's a kids movie, after all.

Yeah, I'd say the problem is her, not the movie.  It's a pretty simple plot ripped from several westerns.  Guy has control of a city, lone hero shows up and makes things right. (Although the hero is a faker and not a real badass, making it a comedy.)

I expected it to be good, I didn't expect it to be as good. Absolutely fucking inspired from beginning to end, and the aforementioned Depp reprise of that older role had me in stitches.

Free form, beautifully rendered in a hyper-realistic manner, the character design is jaw-droppingly good and willfully uncommercial. I would never have thought this could have been done by Gore Verbinski, but it seems those little fleeting flashes of genius in PotC III (ie: the completely bizarro purgatory sequences) were the springboard for something so much greater.

Proof that depp can be a good actor without tim burton.

I've always been very impressed with Depp once I saw Sleepy Hollow.  He was even good in the 9th Gate, which was awful.

Well depp gets in some stinkers from time to time and seems to need to remind people he's actually a talent.

That's why he gets into those stinkers. "look at me, I saved this piece of shit"

I thought it was a little too existential and trippy to be able to maintain a 9 year old's attention span. Maybe I'm underselling the kids?

I thought it was great, but a little slow in some bits. It felt like a personal project/art film that somehow Nickelodeon got tricked into making a big budget production out of. Definitely not what I expected given the ratings and the commercials. Loved all the colorful background characters!

Just finally got to see this. Loved it. Yes, way too deep for most kids, but it had enough slapstick visuals to keep them occupied.

My 10-year old thought it was great. I did too.
