Title: Portfolio Sites/ web templates
Post by: Merusk on February 04, 2011, 10:14:44 AM
So it occurs to me that I should probably put together an online portfolio to keep up with the 'kids these days.'  Plus printing and then scanning all my work into a .pdf to send out with resumes seems dumb if I could just drop a link instead.   Bonus if I could somehow get a 3d-dwf file in there for the BIM stuff I'm starting to do. (Tho I don't know if there's a web plugin for AutoDesk's design review. hrm.)

The problem is I've never coded or modded a bit of .html or flash in my life.   I'm willing to learn, but I think it'd be better if I started off with a template and worked my way up from there.  Particularly since I should get this done in the next few weeks.

Anyone have experience with such sites or suggestions?  My work would be in .dwf or .pdf format, though I could convert it to .jpg if I'm stuck with just using a photography template.  Doing a little bit of searching all I've found is wix.com and then a bunch of photography places like zenfolio.  I'm thinking wix.com would suit me best, but does anyone know of other places?

Thanka.

wix.com looks handy. However any real-time rendering display of your model files will likely be prohibitive using that wix.com system, unless they have a 3d flash plug in already provided by them.

You options for real-time rendering of 3d models are VRML (rather old), A flash 3d engine (Like Swift 3D (http://www.erain.com/), or some other flash engine), QuickTime VR (If your 3d app can make such files), WebGL (http://www.khronos.org/webgl/) and I'm sure a few others I don't know about.

It is infinity simpler to simply use images at varying angles. You avoid slowdowns, compatibility, and the requirement of plug ins.

EDIT: I also believe Cs3 and 4 can import common 3d file types right into Photoshop, such as .obj or COLLADA.

If he hasn't ever done any html or flash he is better off just setting up a wordpress site and putting some screenshots up with maybe a link to the 3d source file.  There are thousands of free templates to choose from and it is very easy to update or add content.

I agree. However that Wix site also seems to be about as complicated. But sexier.

Hmmm.  That Wix site is interesting...

I thought about WordPress, but I didn't want the Blog feel for my portfolio.  Like BW said, the Wix stuff is pretty slick.

I think I'll just drop a link to the .dwf file.*, combined with the multi-image approach.  I can't drop the raw 3d file out there beceause the designs are owned by my previous employers. Dropping a fully functional working model out in the public like that is a good way to get blacklisted.

I hadn't considered the slowdown/ plugin problem since this isn't something I've done before.  Thanks for the tips, guys.

* .dwfs are AutoDesk's version of a .pdf file but it uses vectors instead of rasters.  The 3-d versions have all the info of a model and the ability to cut live sections without any ability to extract that data and use it. (Well, outside of a printer, but without annotations you may as well model it up again yourself.)
