Title: NFL Playoff Picks: Super Bowl Finale!
Post by: HaemishM on February 03, 2005, 01:08:00 PM
Time to pick the WINNAR of the Playoff Pick 'Em. This is for all the marbles, the Super Bowl. Pick who wins, and you get 2 wins counted to your total instead of 1; picking the loser will be worth only 1 loss. Also, pick a score, and in case of a tie, the closest score pick is the tiebreaker. Looks like DV and Sidereal are in the driver's seats; just pick the winner and hope your score is right. EDIT: If the score itself doesn't provide a sufficient tiebreaker, the person whose score pick's total is closest to the total number of points in the actual game will be declared winner.

I'm taking New England, somewhere around 24-17. Philly will make it respectable, and the score will be lower than most expect.

EDIT: For those with 5-6 wins who didn't notice the way the rules are set up, here is a tip on strategy for you....if sidereal takes New England, you may as well take Philly. It's your only shot to win.

If the Pats win, that will put us both at 9 wins, with the score as our tiebreaker. If the Pats lose, we're both stuck at 7 points, and any 6-win person with the insight to take Philly jumps to 8 points and a win. If none of the 6-win folks choose Philly, a 5-win person with Philly (like Paelos) could tie it up at 7 wins, and take the crown based on score.

OTOH, if sidereal picks Philly, you are all fucked.

Bring the noise.
Cheers.............

Would ANYONE really pick Philly though? As other than a last ditch desperate effort to win the no-prize?

Eagles, 24-20

Edit: Sorry Paelos, I didn't even look at the predictions that went before me. I just figured Philly is the only chance I'd have and the score just became one with my brain.

I'm ambivalent.  Belichick is a preparation machine, but Philly has many more horses.  I think T.O. will want to prove something and the depleted NE backcourt will matter much more than it did against a rookie quarterback.

I'm taking Philly.  There will be no ties.

Edit: In honor of Lexicos, the God of reading comprehension, I shall include a score: 24 - 21 Philadelphia

Going with the Pats since Tom Brady's a local boy (well as local as you can be growing up in a major metropolitan area) and I disliked T.O. when he was a 49er and am greatly amused that even with his broken leg he's made the Super Bowl all about himself.

Score: 24-19 Pats

It's a good thing I have a massive pool bet going on the game since I'm out now. Funny that so many people are picking the Eagles because of the longshot factor, but that's the nature of the beast.

I want both teams to come down with a violent case of food poisoning before the game because of my love for both of them.

Halftime -- Considering the defense we've seen thus far, I think it's safe to say that all of your scores are way off.

When my high school played Abeline Cooper in the state championship in 1997 and Drew Brees was our QB, the score was 15-15 at halftime.  My school went on to win the game 55-15.

Granted. That was high school.  ;)

I think nearly everyone thought this game would be a defensive struggle; most of the scores I heard from talking heads in the media were in the 17-24 point range for each team.  And I felt the same way, but sometimes my dreams come true, so I had to go with it.

Well...That was a good game. I wanted the Eagles to win, but wasn't really expecting much. To be honest, I was afraid they weren't going to score even once. McNabb made enough big plays to keep 'em going, but just as many turnovers as well. But I'm glad that at least it turned out to be very close.

One thing I'll say about McNabb , he, at times, makes some horrible passes. Like real stinkers with absolutely no spiral, he got intercepted on two of em and threw one for the last touchdown. Damn wierd.

And did someone forget to tell the Eagles that they were in the 4th quarter of the superbowl and down by two scores? Um you might wanna hurry it up a little!

You aren't kidding man.  I think this game could have gone the other way if they would have played the clock correctly.  Eagles' defense should be given a chance to take the red shirt off of McNabb for one practice because they played a hell of a game.

As to what happened in the last 1/2 of the 4th quarter, that was all on Andy Reid. He was majorly outcoached. That onside kick with 2 TOs was really stupid.

And 3 Interceptions.

Throwing for a bunch of yards isn't that hard compared to making good decisions.

It was just dumb of them to run the offense so slowly at around the 4 minute mark. The might not have even considered an onsides kick if they had played the previous possession faster. It was also dumb to not have anyone back to field the final punt. That I cannot believe. They weren't even playing all 11 guys to block, there was a guy on the far left who was lined up about 20 yards away. Why wasn't that guy (or someone else) playing back? The ball rolling around takes up time, and of course you could get much worse field position.

My theory on most sports is that coaching the actual game mostly matters in the post-season. During the regular season coaching is about motivating people, running practices, teaching guys, evaluating talent, etc. It's only during the post-season of most sports where in-game decisions make a huge difference. That is one place the Patriots excel.

And btw, that half time show was a bit depressing.

Not that I don't like the Beatles: I love them. It's just kinda sad to see that nowadays, it's considered the first choice in what's safe and family friendly entertainment. Then again, this was Paul, not the Beatles. I couldn't help but imagine what Lennon would have been like up there. Most likely even more confrontational than a Justin Timberlake or Janet Jackson could ever hope to be.

edit: damnit, typos in three consecutive posts

It wasn't their fault they lost.  They had cramps.

The over/under was 48, so the experts expected a fairly high scoring game.  I though the Pats played pretty sloppily, Brady was off all game and their play calling was not so hot.  When they ran the ball with Dillon regularly and played their 8 man zone on defense, they were dominant.  So they decided not to do either of those things very often.  Maybe Romeo has already become afflicted with Browns Suckitis.  I was shocked at Dillon making yardage running outside on sweeps.  I expected the Pats to make some hay running up the middle, where the Eagles are small, but not running outside, where the Eagles are fast.

McNabb was hot and cold.  He made some bad throws, but he also made some incredible throws.  The touchdown where he rifled the ball between two defenders was one of the best passes I have ever seen in my life.  The last touchdown had nice touch too (though WTF were the pats doing playing man to man in that situation?).

Eags clock management was pure comedy.

On the more important issue, did anyone else think this year's crop of commercials was pretty weak?

The monkies commercials were pure gold. Other than that, suckage.

I dunno; making fun of idiot co-workers is old hat to me.

My favorites were the FedEx Kinkos commercial (Ten things that make a SuperBowl commercial great!), and the Fargo-like Ford Mustang commercial (although did they have to show it, like, four times?).

Good Christ- this looks like I am posting using a spreadsheet. I fear change!

Goddamn that was a boring game. McNabb crapped the bed- he threw some passes that a good high school quarterback would never throw. Also, the commercials were by far the weakest lot I can remember for a Super Bowl.

And one more thing- Gus Hansen is the luckiest man who has ever sat at a poker table.

Ha ha, damn that Gus Hansen. Not only does he win, but he wins in a way that pissed people off.

I also liked the FedEx commercial. Some of the monkey ones were good. Most of them were awful, and a bunch of them weren't even new.

And did someone forget to tell the Eagles that they were in the 4th quarter of the superbowl and down by two scores? Um you might wanna hurry it up a little!

You ain't kidding. That was absolutely horrible two-minute play. It was like they'd never practiced or even discussed the possibility that they'd need to run the two-minute drill. Mosey up to the line, call the play slow as possible. They could have had an extra minute or more of play had they actually managed that effectively.

EDIT: The game wasn't very exciting to me, but it might have been because I was only emotionally invested in seeing T.O.'s leg get snapped in half and him laying on the field shrieking in career-ending pain. Sigh. The commercials were for the most part tepid crap. Some of the most bland, boring, unmemorable pieces of advertising shite ever trotted out. The fact that the only Budweiser commercial worth commenting on was the salute to the troops tells me the ad guys got shit-scared and bailed on the whole Super Bowl thing.

BTW, Haemish....just as an FYI, you tallied the records wrong. I was 6-4 over the first 3 weeks.

Luckily, Rasix was the only other 6-4 who picked the Pats, and I was closer on score. So I still won. Just figured I'd do the honest thing and point that out.

Oh, and let Shockeye know he still hasn't got the settings right yet for blacklisting.

Bring the noise.

Anyone know what the whole deal is about the NFL not allowing champagne in the Patriots dressing room after the game was over? I mean, c'mon! It's tradition in ANY sport for the champagne to flow in the locker room after the game.

Sometimes the NFL takes it's No Fun League moniker a little too seriously imo.
