Title: If it were my home
Post by: murdoc on January 20, 2011, 10:24:21 AM
http://www.ifitweremyhome.com

Website that compares the country you currently live in to others around the world.

Interesting stuff. For example:

If The United States were your home instead of Canada you would...

spend 82.93% more money on health care
experience 40.19% more of a class divide
have 34.53% more babies
have 23.05% more chance of dying in infancy
use 21.38% less electricity
make 20.83% more money
die 3.05 years sooner
have 9.41% more chance of being unemployed
consume 6.11% less oil
be 50% more likely to have HIV/AIDS
work 4.17% more hours each year

Does Canada use a lot of oil for heating or something? I didnt get how they use more oil than a typical US person does.

Yes but their winters versus our cars?

Yes but their winters versus our cars?

I read it as an individual comparison, not an overall comparison, i.e. Canada as a whole doesn't use 6% more oil than we do, but each individual person there uses 6% more than a given individual in the US.  Canadians drive almost as much as we do and then they will use more in utilities so it makes sense.

Hmm I was thinking percapita total usage. And figured our driving out would out weight their oil use for heating. Oh well live and learn.

Check out Singapore. The oil is just per capita, so it includes stuff like shipping which is not directly used by people living there.

Canadians don't drive?  How do they get all their cars with the Ontario license plates to Florida then?

Probably an issue of miles driven per capita.  Canada has a lot of space and not many major cities.

Living in the 3rd2nd world is awesome!

If The United States were your home instead of Hungary you would...

consume 3.8 times more oil
use 3.3 times more electricity
spend 4.5 times more money on health care
make 2.5 times more money (lol)
experience 60.71% more of a class divide
be 6 times more likely to have HIV/AIDS
have 46.66% more babies
live 4.55 years longer
have 20.26% less chance of dying in infancy
have 13.89% more chance at being employed
work 0.62% more hours each year

Bolded the :awesome_for_real: /  :ye_gods: part.

Ho ho ho.  Who's laughing now Canada???

use 41.89% less electricity
have 34.34% more babies
make 28.91% less money
spend 33.35% less money on health care
have 14.12% more chance at being employed
experience 12.77% more of a class divide
be 75% less likely to have HIV/AIDS

Public Transit here tends to be pretty good and there's less suburban sprawl per capita.

If Poland were your home instead of The United States you would...

consume 77.47% less oil
use 73.07% less electricity
make 61.42% less money
spend 86.32% less money on health care
have 27.4% less babies
experience 22.44% less of a class divide
die 2.39 years sooner
have 8.47% more chance of dying in infancy
be 83.33% less likely to have HIV/AIDS
work 7.96% more hours each year
have 4.3% more chance at being employed

Poland is one of the LANDS OF MY FOREBEARS, which is why I picked it.  :why_so_serious:

I'm a little wtf that the US is apparently really, really full of AIDS.

The things I found on the internet says that Canadians drive 80-85% of what we drive.  None of them were worth linking though, because they were either old or dubious quality.

It's not. It's just relative. It's about 1.2M cases in the US or .06% of the pop v. .02% of the pop in France or Italy.

Compare that to the problem in all of Africa and it's just not even close.

All that matters is that people living in the US make more money on average than people outside the US.  All these other figures are meaningless.

Tonight's low where I live will be -36° C / -32.8° F without windchill, with windchill both units of measurement are around -40°.  Some parts use a lot of fuel oil during the winter.

For me that would be cold. After finding this picture of some Canadians on a summer fishing trip, I guess it wouldnt be that cold for you.

This. Someone make it happen.

Also the AIDS stat is fucking retarded as others have pointed out. 6 times more likely than .02% is still insanely unlikely. Something like chance of cancer would be more interesting or life expectancy after you get HIV or cancer would be much more telling.

Wow!

If the United States were your home instead of Austria:

You would make 17,77% more money

Yay?

have 97.87% more chance of being unemployed

Well, thats ok, I'm certain that I'm in the 2.13%, cause I'm awesome.

work 21.17% more hours each year

For 17,77% more money. Well, thats a bit unfair isn't it?

spend 86.23% more money on health care

Hey, where did my 17% money just go?

If The United States were your home instead of Norway you would...
have 2.9 times more chance of being unemployed
experience 80% more of a class divide
have 72.96% more chance of dying in infancy
use 54.67% less electricity
be 6 times more likely to have HIV/AIDS
consume 33.49% more oil
have 26.88% more babies
spend 48.68% more money on health care
make 20.82% less money
die 1.84 years sooner

I think I'll stay in Norway.

This is kind of retarded since the percentages don't tell you anything.  If my my healthcare costs would go from 10 dollars a year to 20 dollars a year!  and my taxes go down from 60,000 a year to 50,0000 a year they would show as:

Healthcare costs go up 100%
Taxes go down 17%.

Which implies I'd be better off, when in fact I'm out $9,990 a year.

Except of course you would generally be expected to know something about the country you live in so as to make the comparison.

Well, thats a fair assumption. Lets see:

USA 46400 -  6719 = 39681 / 1797 = 22,082 / hour

Austria: 39400 - 3608 = 35792 / 1483  = 24,139 / hour

Guess I'll have to work 3 more hours per week now to catch up to you moneywise. So please, everybody post more here on f13 so I don't get bored.  :awesome_for_real:

Cost of health care also doesn't count the quality or availability of treatment. There's something to be said for walking into a hospital and getting treatment without having to take out a loan for it. I don't understand why that's such a difficult concept for people.
