Title: DS Games for kids (screw Christmas)
Post by: slog on December 13, 2010, 06:16:04 AM
I got my marching orders today from my better half.

Quote
Go get a couple DS games for the kid.  They better not suck

So F13, what do we think?  The kid is question is 6, reads on a second grade level, likes to color, and only has a couple games right now.

Basically, you're presented with a puzzle (e.g.:  get a kite out of a tree) and then you enter nouns/adjectives to create items (e.g.:  a ladder) to solve the puzzle.  Items and creatures have behaviors that are generally appropriate, so if you toss a 'policeman' next to a 'criminal', they'll chase each other around and fight, while anything made of wood burns, etc.

There's a ton of puzzles, and you get additional rewards/points for creative solutions and lower item counts, so there's a fair amount of replay value there too.

I liked the first Scribblenauts, but the tap to move controls for Maxwell were terrible.  The sequel lets you use the d-pad instead.

I think she's a little young for that.  It's rated 10+ and she still spells phonetically.  It looks pretty cool for her in a year or 2 though.

My five year old likes Pokemon HG/SS - she is almost reading, so she doesn't quite get the story yet.  But she's got some wicked lvl 20 pokemon she was showing me - kid loves grinding!

Mario Kart DS is good, too.  Super Mario Bros.  Animal Crossing, maybe?

Etrian Odyssey?

That's rated for Teens.

Drawn to Life, Spongebob Squarepants edition looks interesting.

Etrian Odyssey?
I handed that to my 14 year old, and she's been slowly plowing through it.  I can't decide if that makes me an evil dad, or a good dad.

I'd definitely go with HG/SS.  Especially if you can get the pokewalker set up.  She can take her favorite pokemon for walks!

Rune Factory/Harvest Moon games.

Nintendogs.

I'm not presuming to know her better than you do, but I think that it has the potential to be a great bonding/educational experience if you guys were to play it together.  :)

Anyway, Drawn to Life (also 5th Cell) would be a great call as well, Spongebob or no.  :)

If you can find a copy of Soul Bubbles, that's great stuff, as well.
