Title: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: apocrypha on December 03, 2010, 10:51:42 AM I have just discovered internet radio. Specifically, I've discovered it because I've been given a network media player that also does internet radio. My problem is one of too much choice. I hit "English language" music stations and there were 15000 in the list! I don't really know where to begin!
So, does anyone have any radio stations that they love? I'd prefer stations that don't have adverts, and I'd prefer ones with as little talking as possible - just music! That said, if you have a particular favourite that does have ads or talking I'll give anything a try. I also have *zero* preferences as to musical genres or station locations/nationalities. I'm all about broadening my musical tastes and if the spoken language for Awesome-FM23 is Swedish or Farsi then I'm cool with that too. I had a happy half hour doing the dishes whilst listening to a Chinese classical music station last night and this morning I ate breakfast with a Bluegrass station in Alabama entertaining me. So hit me up folks, share the musical love! Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: Chimpy on December 03, 2010, 12:51:41 PM For electronica/dance music Di.fm has a lot of different stations which even in their "free" versions play like 1 commercial every 2 hours or so. Their psy-chill and ambient stations are nice non *thump*thump*thump* music.
Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: rattran on December 03, 2010, 01:04:23 PM I listen to the Secret Agent stream on http://somafm.com/ (http://somafm.com/) occasionally. Mostly I listen to Radio1, which is exotic and fun here, probably not so much were you are.

If you find yourself wishing you were ever in Austin, KGSR is a good way to feel the Austin music scene's vibe. Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? http://www.purerock96.com/ It's not clearchannel owned, so you don't get the mix of Hendrix, Godsmack, Metallica, Ozzy, GnR, Nickelback etc that CC stations try to pass of for rock. Instead you get Crash Kings, Kings of Leon, Muse, Stone Sour, Anberlin, Blue October, Avenged Sevenfold, The Black Keys, Cage the Elephant, etc. Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: apocrypha on December 03, 2010, 09:41:47 PM Brilliant, thanks folks, nice little list added to the favourites. I shall spend some time with all of them this weekend!
I am really enjoying being able to listen to radio like this. This is what DAB should have been like! Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: 01101010 on December 04, 2010, 04:43:58 AM Strangely enough, if you can put up with iTunes, that radio selector has a shit load of music by genre. IF there aren't any restrictions on it... my last job forbid putting iTunes on your work pc.
Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: apocrypha on December 04, 2010, 06:13:02 AM Ah, unfortunately the media player doesn't like iTunes. Streaming from a PC it'll take Twonky or WMP libraries, but the internet radio is built-in, so I'm limited to the stations it finds. Although using the word "limited" seems inappropriate given the 10s of 1000s of stations it seems to have listed :awesome_for_real:
Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: naum on December 04, 2010, 09:24:23 AM I used to do this but Pandora and last.fm and podcasts have mostly supplanted the practice.
Though, I still have record a few esoteric radio programs (like this one, for example (http://www.echoes.org/)) via Radioshift (http://rogueamoeba.com/radioshift/) and dump into an iTunes playlist for driving & ipod usage… Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: apocrypha on December 06, 2010, 09:53:09 PM Well, so far Grassy Hill, KGSR, Vinyltap and Frisky have all refused to work. Don't know if that's because those radio stations have bad internet feeds or if it's the vagaries of the device.
All the rest work nicely though, thanks! Anyone know any good folk stations? I'm sad that Grassy Hill is just silence, I had high hopes. Oh, and a good classical station would be awesome - Radio 3 has too much opera and the UK's Classic FM has FAR too many adverts for itself..... "You're listening to Classic FM!" every 10 minutes ffs. Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: FatuousTwat on December 07, 2010, 01:48:28 PM +1 for soma. Groove Salad and Space Station Soma are both great.
Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: Tale on December 07, 2010, 02:12:33 PM I'm in Sydney, Australia. The best radio station here is FBI 94.5. Check it out: http://www.fbiradio.com/content.php/753.html
Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: Fraeg on December 07, 2010, 02:28:30 PM not true radio but: http://www.blackmetalradio.com/
If you are interested in checking out the more extreme side of music. Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Might be because you're in the wrong part of the world. Which is unfortunate, because Vinyl Tap usually delivers a loosely connected set of music from a couple of genres, along with some interesting commentary. Title: Re: Radio stations worth listening to? Post by: apocrypha on December 07, 2010, 10:55:03 PM Ah good point, yeah. Didn't occur to me that some of them might location-filter.
