Title: Krome Studios collapsing... UPDATE: as is Emergent (Gamebryo)
Post by: UnSub on November 09, 2010, 08:42:16 PM
Not know for anything good in a while, Krome Studios looks to be on its last legs (http://au.psp.ign.com/articles/113/1132912p1.html).

Probably Krome's last title will be Blade Kitten (which got panned) that was based on a web comic... written by one of Krome's owners and its chief creative.

If you want to get some local impressions of the closure, here's a closer link (http://www.tsumea.com/australasia/australia/news/151010/serious-trouble-at-krome-studios?page=3) than IGN that features posts from ex-Krome people. I've posted a long quote below, so I've spoilered it for size.

UPDATE: Emergent, who run Gamebryo, are also now in administration (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/31513/Emergent_Technologies_Assets_Including_Gamebryo_Engine_Up_For_Sale.php). They'd actually had a deal moving ahead with Krome to merge (or similar) when Krome collapsed.

An interesting side note: while Krome employees wonder if they are going to get their entitlements, Krome's former CEO has apparently headed to a US studio (Blue Diamond Studios) founded (http://www.sos.wa.gov/corps/search_detail.aspx?ubi=602975437) in Nov. 2009. He registered the name about when Krome entered its first wave of layoffs.

Who?

I saw a trailer for Blade Kitten.  I'm not the least bit surprised it was panned.  It looked like some anime fan's worst fan wankery.

They mostly made ports of games (like Force unleashed for Wii iirc).

Most people I knew that worked for them didn't enjoy it much except for the fact that it was "stable work during the recession"   :oh_i_see:

Apparently back in the day isn't as back as it used to be.  :oh_i_see:

Yeah, you'll notice that keeps happening the older and older you get.  Strange!

Ty the Tasmanian Tiger or some Spyro titles were probably the best known Krome outputs. Krome was (at one time) one of the largest Australian dev houses.

I'd forgotten they'd done Hellboy: Science of Evil. Lords, that was a poor game.
