Okay, I am in need of a bit of help here. Could somebody please suggest any kind of funny world war 2 films? Comedies in a world war 2 setting to be more precis. Or something similar? Possiblely something a girl would enjoy.

I know this forum has a quite a few movie buffs, so dont be shy to share!

Why WWII?  Might help with coming up with "something similar" that still serves your nefarious purposes.  The only WWII comedy I can think of is Hogan's Heroes, but that's a TV show.  The Great Escape, maybe?  It's not exactly a comedy (the end is pretty depressing), but it's got funny bits.

It's only funny in the parts it's not tragic - but  Life is Beautiful  (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118799/) is really worth seeing if you haven't already.

Top Secret

1941, directed by Spielberg and starring Belushi/Akroyd kind of fits that bill.  It is the story of a bunch of folks hastily preparing for a non-existent Japanese invasion of California, and hijinks ensue.  It sounds better than it really is though, sadly.

Yeah  - this film had a lot more promise than delivery. But it does kind of fit your criteria.

Adolf Hitler - My Part in His Downfall (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068171/) is an ok movie. Its based on Spike Milligans war momoires (which are a howl btw) Its a bit more like a carry on film and it is old but its pretty watchable. One of the things against it is that the subtext of Milligan having a terrible time during the war comes out far stronger in the films than the books, so the film lurches between comedy and tragedy.

MASH (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MASH_%28film%29) is probably the essential black war comedy. Its a bit different than the TV series and is pretty funny. I actually watched it with my mom and we both enjoyed it tremendously, so its probably a good date movie.

Carry on Sergeant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carry_On_Sergeant) was the first carry on film and is very different to what the later carry on films turned out to be. I've only seen it once and it was very funny.

I almost forgot: Catch-22.  There is a pretty good version from 1970 or so starring Alan Arkin.

Stripes is almost in WWII. It's in the 80s.

I've never seen it, but if you're looking for a more recent date movie, maybe, Captain Corelli's Mandolin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238112/)? I heard it's not that good though. The Eagle Has Landed (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074452/) is strictly a guy movie. Kelly's Heroes.

Casablanca has a fair amount of funny, plus it is one of the best movies ever made and the womens like the romance.

Or...Overdrawn at the Memory Bank....if you like Casablanca....

Catch 22 is a funny film but it goes so off the rails at the end that I'm not sure it's an entirely appropriate date movie if that's what you're after.  Also, peoples guts spilling out tends to dampen the atmosphere.

Kelly's Heroes, is tremendous and very funny to boot. One of Donald Sutherland's more interesting performances. Bit of a blokes film though. Similarly The Dirty Dozen is also quite amusing in places but definitely more of an action film than a comedy.

I can't think of many recent WW2 comedies but you could probably get a few laughs out of Captain Corelli's Mandolin but more because of Nic Cage's terrible Italian accent than anything else. It is terrible but the scenery is very nice. (Can't remember if my missus enjoyed it or not.)  Other than that, you've got to go back 60+ years. I echo "Casablanca" and add:

A Matter of Life and Death is a wonderful 1946 Powell & Pressburger fantasy/romance film about a British pilot (David Niven) who cheats death and then has to stand trial in heaven to justify why he should stay alive.

Whisky Galore is an amusing 1949 British film about some scottish islanders who try to retrieve and hide 50000 bottles of whisky from a ship sunk during the war. Based on a true story.

Mister Roberts is a 1955 comedy about life on a cargo ship in the pacific, starring Henry Fonda, James Cagney and Jack Lemmon. Has been available on DVD and occasionally gets shown on UK TV.

Operation Petticoat is a 1959 film about the captain of a pink submarine (appropriately directed by Blake Edwards who went on to direct The Pink Panther) starring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis.  Was available in a Cary Grant DVD collection a couple of years ago but don't know if it's still around.

Sir T mentioned MASH which is a great film and one of my all time favourites but if WW2 is an absolute pre-requisite then I should point out it's set during the Korean war. (Also, while I love it, my wife can't stand it but mainly beause she doesn't like Robert Altman's trick of having lots of overlapping dialogue as it annoys her).

A few people said a few nice words about some movies that probably aren't funny.  Chimpy hit the nail on the motherfucking head.  Top Secret is one of the all time greats, in the vein of The Naked Gun.  Set very much in WWII.  Starring Val Kilmer, of all people, back before anyone knew who he was.  On my top 10 list of all time favorite movies.

Catch-22, Mr. Roberts and Casablanca would have been my recommendations, yeah.

The film of the Spike Milligan books is ok, but damn, the books are hilarious.

Hope and Glory isn't a comedy exactly, but there's some very amusing stuff in it, and it's a completely different angle on WW2.

"What Did You Do in the War Daddy?" is a good comedy starred a young James Coburn. It involves Italy, soccer, wine, chicks, and a big drunken misunderstanding, all in a WW2 setting.

I have to second or third the recommendations for both Top Secret and Casablanca. If you have never seen all of the latter, you owe it to yourself to do so. It really does deserve all the praise it gets.

While not WWII, Dr. Strangelove (Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb) needs to be on any list.  It's cold war, but black and white, so it counts damnit.

Must third (fourth?) Kelly's Heroes. Talk about an all-star cast. Clint Eastwood, Don Rickles, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, &c. make for a killer film.

Funnier, but not as epic, but still awesome... I have to also agree with Top Secret. As far as Val Kilmer vehicles go, it is on a par with Real Genius, but it goes to eleven.

Not WWII, but avoid On The Beach.

Stalag 17 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046359/).  It's not really a comedy but they do manage some humor in this WWII prison camp flick.  It is a great movie that you should see if you haven't but not sure it is what you are looking for.

Francis is the story of a talking mule in WWII it is great.

Dad's Army was a TV show in Brittan that was pretty good.

Some of these suggestions are so far outside the criteria that I'm going to have to submit The Producers.

I doubt a woman would enjoy 1941 or Top Secret unless she has a warped sense of humor.

And it's also not particularly funny. It does have Treat Williams in it though.  And Christopher Lee.

While Inglorious Basterds is not a comedie in itself, she did enjoy the "funny" moments in it. Hence I do believe there is some room for trying something a little bit exotic.

And with all the good suggestion there has to be atleast one that she likes.. Just have to find it first  :grin:

The only problem being that 1941 is terrible.

She asked if there were any true world war 2 comedies. I said yes without being truly sure :facepalm:. And then she of course wanted to see one. Wops. So now I have to come up with something that just remotely fits the criteria.. or look stupid.

If she out and out asked for a WW2 comedy, then you have to get Top Secret.  Right now.  Does she like Naked Gun?  Does she like Airplane?  Those kinds of movies?  If so, this is perfect.  If she hates it, it will be her own damn fault for asking.  At least YOU will get to see it, and unless you hate things that are funny, you will love it.  It's a classic.
