Title: Ascendency (1995 space 4x) porting to iPhone/Pad
Post by: Stormwaltz on October 12, 2010, 03:20:04 PM
This game was mentioned in some long-ago thread about another space 4x. Back in college it impressed me with awesome music and lever race concepts, but it was crippled by miserably stupid AI.

Original developers The Logic Factory are porting it to iPhone with little more than a UI update, which says how far computing technology has increased in the last 15 years.

I really liked the way they did technology and research in that game.  And the star map really was 3d... which may have had a great deal to do with why the AI was so stupid.

As you mentioned, the aliens were varied and interesting.  A shame they could never pull it all together.

This was a seriously awful game. You're forgetting it wasn't just the AI that was 100% broken. A lot of the tech trees led to things that didn't do anything meaningful or anything at all--the longer you played, the more things you found that weren't even really implemented. It was an interesting UI and graphics design with a missing game inside.

I remember the tech trees were different everytime you played because they connected to different node points.

I remember that the environmental/infrastructure tech often did nothing (or appeared to do nothing).  Weapon and ship techs did stuff (opened up weapons and hulls).

I remember being undecided on whether I liked the way they did building out planets or not (map with slots for placing buildings, some slots had bonuses for some building types).  As long as the game wasn't huge, it was manageable.

I do remember that it was broken and they never fixed it, but I liked the concepts that they were going for.  I remember the AI being the most egregious failing.

From that and the name I at first confused it with Supremacy (Overlord in the US) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overlord_%281990_video_game%29). Back ~20 years ago we spent many many nights playing that one on Amiga, until eventually it became too easy on all difficulty levels except the hardest, which was nearly impossible to win (not because of the AI, but the time limit).

Okay, seriously.  Where the fuck are all the good Droid games at???   You can get Civ Rev for the iPhone, but we're stuck with fucking Bejeweled and an snes emulator?  I know most Droid phones can handle as much or more than the iPhone can.

"Most" is exactly the problem I guess. Especially the different displays.

Apple holds the money. Android games don't sell nearly as good as iPhone ones.
