Title: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Sky on September 22, 2010, 06:59:00 AM My favorite time period. Some great casting. Amazing costuming and sets. Buscemi puts on a great performance, such amazing subtlety and some good writing.
We were pretty worried given the intro music being some sixties rock piece, but the actual show was great. No idea who's bright idea the completely inappropriate intro music was, but it should really be dropped asap. Tommy from Snatch as Capone was awesome. Although I kept wanting Jimmy to say "You took the fucking jam outta my doughnut, Tommy. You did." Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Arthur_Parker on September 22, 2010, 12:53:07 PM Thought it was mostly great, only bit I didn't like was the little girl crying, she seemed too young to understand acting, bit disturbing.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Sky on September 22, 2010, 12:59:53 PM Yeah, I remember thinking she was a genius actor for the pause in crying when the father sat down...then thinking she's way to young to be consciously acting that good.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Slayerik on September 23, 2010, 06:02:22 AM I like this show. Hope it stays strong.
Never been the biggest Buscemi fan, but I think he's good in this role. Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Rasix on September 23, 2010, 11:12:27 AM Best part of the first EP:
OMAR! :drill: This could be very good. If nothing else, the setting is incredibly interesting. Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Ard on September 23, 2010, 02:24:08 PM This show managed to teach me something. That I never, ever, want to see Steve Buscemi naked and having sex, ever again. Liked it a fair amount otherwise though.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Sky on September 24, 2010, 06:55:32 AM Buscemi was naked? I never noticed. I guess.....BOOBIES!!!!
Were you saying something? Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: FatuousTwat on October 01, 2010, 03:04:59 AM I was out of town and missed the second episode, bleh.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Tarami on October 03, 2010, 08:37:36 AM Fantastic.
Curiousity: Is Nucky's deceased wife "played" by Molly Parker (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0662504/)? There was a photo of her shown in the second episode and I could have sworn it was her. Edit: The Interwebs appear to agree with my observation. Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on October 11, 2010, 02:02:18 PM Haven't seen last night's ep yet, but the first three were very good. Definitely enjoying it. And wow, does Nucky's moll make me glad this is on HBO. :drill:
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Slayerik on October 12, 2010, 07:11:30 AM Yeah, this show is pretty cool. Lots of good looking women, and well casted.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Mrbloodworth on October 13, 2010, 06:41:46 AM Really enjoying this show.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Ginaz on October 13, 2010, 09:10:41 AM Apparently the character Steve Buscemi plays, Nucky, was completely different physically than Buscemi IRL. The real Nucky was well over 6' tall and around 225-230. I can understand, though, why they went they way they did with the role. If they got some big dude to play the part, people would be comparing him to Tony Soprano. Besides, it makes for a better story to have a weasley guy like Buscemi be the boss instead of someone who's just physically imposing.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on October 13, 2010, 10:03:35 AM Plus Buscemi fucking rules.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Tarami on October 13, 2010, 11:29:39 AM Indeed. The casting is, as so often with HBO, impeccable.
Also, I want to see more of the IRS agent, Nelson. He's fucken awesome. "The roast tastes good." Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Slayerik on November 15, 2010, 08:04:55 AM I still like this show. It's not awesome, but I DVR and enjoy it.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Mrbloodworth on November 15, 2010, 08:06:52 AM Indeed. The casting is, as so often with HBO, impeccable. Also, I want to see more of the IRS agent, Nelson. He's fucken awesome. "The roast tastes good." I'm starting to think he is a very damaged person. Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: voodoolily on November 15, 2010, 11:09:06 AM Best part of the first EP: OMAR! :drill: This could be very good. Plus, Michael Pitt has never been hotter. :drillf: Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: proudft on November 15, 2010, 08:27:30 PM Eddie is the best butler in the history of manservants.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on November 19, 2010, 03:39:29 PM Nucky really needs to let him finish up his business at the bordello next time- Eddie has definitely earned it.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Zaljerem on November 30, 2010, 06:23:18 PM I still like this show. It's not awesome, but I DVR and enjoy it. Agreed. Liked the last episode a lot, a few things coming to a head .... Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Ruvaldt on November 30, 2010, 06:44:09 PM I should like this show more than I do.
I'm on episode 8, and none of the characters or conflicts have quite 'stuck' for me. It's still better than most TV, but that isn't saying a whole lot, I guess. Hoping that I become less tepid within the next few episodes. Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on December 02, 2010, 09:12:36 AM I have liked it along along, but the end of the season rush is amazing. I love Harrow as a character. And wow. Van Alden snapped a lot sooner than I thought he would.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Ard on December 02, 2010, 09:39:42 AM You're making the assumption he actually snapped and that he wasn't completely crazy all along. The flogging and stalking earlier kinda lends itself to that. Jimmy becoming a mess, however, I didn't see coming this early, and even Nucky is falling apart some. It'll be interesting to see how the last episode goes down, and I hope this doesn't follow the trend of HBO prematurely killing a series mid-stride.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Abagadro on December 02, 2010, 10:11:06 AM They renewed it after its second episode.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Ard on December 02, 2010, 10:27:27 AM Doesn't mean they'll get a third though, and they might have to pull a Rome and vastly accelerate the timeline to finish the story.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: HaemishM on December 06, 2010, 08:34:41 AM I finally caught up with all the shows except last night's finale. I really wasn't too sure I was going to stick with it after the first 2 or 3 episodes, but it really picked up about mid-season. I was a bit disappointed that they portrayed Van Alden as so bugfuck nuts but the actor pulled it off so well, I got over it. I love the line in the Chinese restaurant - "The thought of what foul ingredients have gone into this filth repulses me."
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on December 06, 2010, 02:34:37 PM Gonna be an interesting start to season 2. Great thing about HBO is that there are good shows staggered through the year so there is almost always something to watch.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: voodoolily on December 08, 2010, 03:41:01 PM I'm gonna go ahead and girl up the thread once more and say  Gawsh, I hope Nucky and Margaret get married and have babies!! I actually thought he was going to propose to her already as a strategic move, but I somehow think he cares for her too much to use her so literally. And I think he knows she's too smart to fall for it.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: HaemishM on December 09, 2010, 07:43:10 AM Season finale was kind of flat. No big revelation moments, even the return of Eli as the sheriff. The whole betrayal cabal thing I'm not quite convinced on. Still a good show, and one I look forward to seeing another season from.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Slayerik on September 23, 2011, 10:38:56 AM Just a reminder, this starts back up Sunday (9/25) at 9pm EST.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on September 23, 2011, 10:50:22 AM Looking forward to Nucky pwning the triumvirate of dumbshits all season long.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: HaemishM on December 07, 2011, 07:11:09 AM Ummm, holy shit. Just caught the last episode and...
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on December 07, 2011, 08:47:36 AM Yeah, the last two episodes have been full of :ye_gods: moments. Show is SO good right now.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Threash on December 07, 2011, 08:52:31 AM I don't get why Jimmy was such a complete dick to the guy who ended up killing his wife. I hate what they are doing with Margaret, other than that the show has been great.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on December 07, 2011, 10:16:57 AM Jimmy is in WAY over his head, and let the Manny thing go too long. Then he got some suspect advice and was too weak willed/dumb to go against it. I am looking forward to Richard Harrow paying ol Manya a visit. That should be good times.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: HaemishM on December 07, 2011, 11:15:28 AM I don't get why Jimmy was such a complete dick to the guy who ended up killing his wife. I hate what they are doing with Margaret, other than that the show has been great. All I could get was that maybe he didn't like the guy from the get-go and once he had people starting to call him the King of Atlantic City (thanks to Nucky's abdication), he got the big head and didn't think he needed Manny. Nothing else makes any sense because otherwise, why the fuck would you make an enemy like that? Or maybe he didn't like him because he was Jewish and kept calling him "Boychik" to dick him down. Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on December 07, 2011, 11:31:24 AM That was definitely part of it....he hates being talked down to or patronized.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on December 09, 2011, 02:02:57 PM Had to share this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-Iwio2YH1I&feature=channel_video_title). Good times.

Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Abagadro on December 11, 2011, 06:50:23 PM Well that was pretty ballsy.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Threash on December 11, 2011, 06:52:25 PM That would have been a good series ending.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: AcidCat on December 12, 2011, 08:30:37 AM That would have been a good series ending. Yeah. I'm bummed, I thought Jimmy was the most interesting character on the show ... but it made sense and was a real gut-punch moment, great TV. This whole second season really impressed me. Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Threash on December 12, 2011, 09:27:11 AM It's definitely gonna be hard to keep rooting for Nucky anymore.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Abagadro on December 12, 2011, 10:06:51 AM Not sure you were ever really supposed to be.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Tebonas on December 14, 2011, 07:38:45 AM Jimmy could at least have killed his mother and saved his son from her. Since he already knew he was a dead man walking.
Nucky is a vindictive bastard, that much is clear for some time now. Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on December 14, 2011, 08:41:37 AM I was pretty shocked, but going back through the episode it was foreshadowed pretty heavily. Jimmy was exhibiting a lot of signs of suicide victims- saying 'goodbye' to this son (and giving him the dog tags), extra money for Chalky's people, not wanting Richard to come...he knew what was coming and accepted it.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Slayerik on December 14, 2011, 10:47:55 AM Jimmy could at least have killed his mother and saved his son from her. Since he already knew he was a dead man walking. I'm torn on this one....Is she worse than being completely orphaned? Angie was already murdered.... Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on December 14, 2011, 11:12:05 AM If she gets him drunk and fucks him, then yeah, probably worse than being orphaned.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: HaemishM on December 14, 2011, 12:28:34 PM Yeah, I kept thinking there was no way they'd off Jimmy... and then... BAM. Nucky's final comment was fucking awesome. It explained the whole goddamn season in one sentence.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: voodoolily on December 16, 2011, 03:36:19 PM Jimmy could at least have killed his mother and saved his son from her. Since he already knew he was a dead man walking. I'm torn on this one....Is she worse than being completely orphaned? Angie was already murdered.... At least she's more than thirteen years older than the kid. :ye_gods: Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Slayerik on December 18, 2011, 08:16:54 PM You guys do get what I am saying though, right?
Hey she's pretty hot, I'd be glad to fuck grandma. Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Tebonas on December 18, 2011, 10:47:01 PM No you wouldn't. See how it screwed up Jimmy.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: WayAbvPar on December 20, 2011, 10:35:30 AM You guys do get what I am saying though, right? Hey she's pretty hot, I'd be glad to fuck grandma. I still hold the opinion that if Gretchen Mol had gotten naked a couple of times in Rounders, it would have been the perfect movie. Also would have made her character a lot more tolerable. Especially if she would have hooked up with Famke Janssen... Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: HaemishM on November 07, 2014, 07:58:24 PM So this ended a few weeks ago. I finally got around to binge watching the last 8 episodes. That was a really, really good ending and if you missed it, you should go watch it. The show definitely dragged a bit in S4, with the whole Chalky White storyline but it all ended very well. I must admit that each successive character death (whether I expected it or not) really made me sadder than I would have expected. This was one of those shows that got its hooks in me very subtly. I didn't think I'd miss it or care about the characters as much as I did.
The people they brought in for the last season to play the younger versions of established characters were eerily excellent. Hearing what might as well have been Dabney Coleman's voice out of a younger man was surreal. Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Azaroth on November 08, 2014, 04:49:45 PM I feel like this show got no love. I really enjoyed it.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Rendakor on November 08, 2014, 04:56:42 PM I liked the first two seasons but when they killed off Jimmy I feel like it lost it's way. I can't remember where exactly I stopped watching; I remember Nucky getting nearly blown up. I guess I could wiki the interim and watch the last season.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: satael on November 09, 2014, 07:15:50 AM I thought that the last season of Boardwalk Empire was ok but I enjoyed the second season of Peaky Blinders (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2442560/) alot more when it came to gangster epics this fall. :drill:
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: HaemishM on November 09, 2014, 05:56:58 PM How did I never heard about a gangster show starring Tom Hardy in 1919 Birmingham, England? That sounds right up my alley.
Title: Re: Boardwalk Empire Post by: Amarr HM on November 10, 2014, 05:26:06 PM Just flew through all 5 seasons in the last few weeks. Best show I've seen since Sopranos, ending was perfect. All the younger versions were impressively cast and acted out.
