Title: TGS 2010 quick news roundup
Post by: Velorath on September 16, 2010, 03:09:35 AM
Quick rundown of what I found to be the notable stuff that's come out of TGS so far.  Not going into a lot of detail here.  Most of this stuff is niche enough that the  4-5 people here who are interested in the developers involved should be capable of looking up the trailers on 1Up, Gametrailers, or various other sites, and the people who aren't interested likely won't give a shit after hearing descriptions or watching trailers anyway:

Project Dark (PS3/360) announced.  Action RPG from the Demon's Souls team.  Potential spiritual successor to Demon's Souls.  Placeholder site is up, but says there won't be more information until early next year. (http://www.fromsoftware.jp/game/projectdark/)

Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection (PS3) - Officially announced and due out in Spring.

Last Guardian (PS3) - New trailer shown and announced for Holiday 2011.

Some interesting niche stuff for Kinect got announced (still currently have no intention of buying it, but it's nice that they have some talent lined up).  Panzer Dragoon creator Yukio Futatsugi announced Project Draco, Capcom and From Software announced a new Steel Battalion game, Suda 51 announced Codename D, and Parappa the Rapper creator Masaya Matsuura announced Haunt.  Trailers for these are up on various game sites.

Level 5 showed off some gameplay of their upcoming RPG Ni no Kuni (PS3).  I'm not a fan of anime (and in this case an art style that looks like it's for a younger audience) but damned if the art isn't extremely well done in this game, even if it's not my cup of tea.

Devil May Cry (PS3, 360) reboot being developed by Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory.

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater is being remade for the 3DS.

Sega's Yakuza (PS3) franchise is jumping on the zombie bandwagon with Yakuza: Of The End.

Suda 51 and Shinji Mikami announced Shadows of the Damned (the gameplay looks like a very stylized RE4 in some ways).

Probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.

You can't talk about DmC without showing a picture of the new Dante. It's mandatory on the internet right now.

Enjoy:

Project Dark is well, something.

Edit: Also, Ni No Kuni isn't just anime. That shit is straight up Ghibli. Day Zero Purchase.
Edit 2: Thank god the combat looks more like Rogue Galaxy than WKC.

Edit 3: Disgaea 4 leaked by Japanese retailer:

No wonder I don't know what TGS means.

No wonder I don't know what TGS means.

It's the Tokyo Game Show.  Not really an event where they show off a lot of PC stuff.

At least new Dante smokes.

Need more characters that smoke in video games. 100% serious about this.

All the smoking characters are coming out of Japanese-made games.

Hell, I think any change made to Dante can only be positive.

Also, Ni No Kuni isn't just anime. That shit is straight up Ghibli. Day Zero Purchase.

It's the first time in a good long time that I have genuine anticipation for a console game. I bought my friends' old 40gig PS3 a few months ago and have been catching up with some of the cheaper gems out there (Brutal Legend, Batman: Arkham Asylum, InFamous, Drake's Fortune etc) but I've not felt compelled to pick up anything recent at all (happy to wait for Red Dead Redemption to drop in price, for example).

TGS revealing not just Ghibli in fucking playable form but also The Last Guardian and the opportunity to catch up on HD Ico and SotC? Day Zero's damn right. It's just not damn near enough.

Holy crap, GT5 stuff (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/09/16/gran-turismo-5-at-tokyo-game-show-community-features-legacy-tracks-weather-effects-x1-prototype/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=gran_turismo_5_091610).

Quote
These functions will also be available for use in a web browser on Gran-Turismo.com as well as your PS3. You’ll also be able to “gift” cars or car parts to your PSN friends.

Quote
Inside Community is “My Lounge,” in which up to 16 friends can gather to hold online races. Lounge rules are up to you and can be changed from lounge to lounge: A Spec allows you to race from behind the wheel, while B Space allows you to give commands to an AI driver as a sort of “director’s mode.” The AI driver feature also allows you to “rent out” AI drivers, and they’ll gain experience as they race.

Remote Racing is a special mode in Commmunity that also ties into the AI drivers and web browser support. In Remote Racing, you can set up an AI driver as “public,” and he may race against one of your PSN friends while you’re away. When you return, he’ll have gained experience while you were away. In Remote Racing, you’ll be able to watch these races, but not give AI commands like you would in the standard B Spec mode.

Going to have to bite the bullet and buy a PS3 soon for the Team ICO stuff alone!
I'm also excited for the PSN "import game downloading" capabilities I've heard rumors about.
Thanks for the rundown.

Disgaea 4 trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsdxO-xZgDQ)

Also a lot this same footage of El Shaddai was shown off at E3 also, but got overlooked a bit.  Worth checking out for the art style (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skBolKJQzsQ).

Demon's Souls 2 Project Dark Trailer (http://tgs.gamespot.com/video/6276384/)

I pressed pause at exactly 0:28 because my synapses were overloaded with awesome (you'll see why if you watch the clip).  I won't watch the rest so I don't know what else happens in the trailer but just be ready to duck the fragments from your screen exploding.

Looks pretty Demon's Soulish from what little gameplay they showed.   Wish that trailer was a bit clearer (was it being projected onto a wall or something?).  Can't tell if that's supposed to be the main character they show at the end with his face looking like he's undead or something.

Some of it is.  You can see a 9min vid of someone playing it here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OWs2KCqJL8).  The first half of this clip shows off some of the combat (and cutscenes), and the last few minutes show off some of the zoomed out stuff.

That picture of Dante screams, "I cut myself just to feel like I'm alive!"

That picture of Dante screams, "I cut myself just to feel like I'm alive!"

To be fair, would that be any worse than "I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"?

At any rate, a lot of good stuff was shown at TGS this year.  Not really hard to beat last year since, looking back at last year's thread, we got a teaser for The Last Guardian, and a release date for GT5 that was off by almost a year.  Lot of stuff here that's on my radar now that wasn't before (I'd be a lot more excited about Phantasy Star Online 2 though if Universe hadn't been such utter shit).

PSO2 sounds like it has as much in common with Universe as PSO. At least them calling it PSO is an acknowledgement that Universe was a failure on some level.

Catherine (Atlus JRPG?) Second Trailer (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/18/these-catherine-trailers-arent-getting-any-less-bizarre/)

I have no fucking idea what the holy monkey fuck is going on in this trailer, but I WANT this game. Persona 3 has made me able to tolerate the Weeboo, and this thing looks so whacked out I can't even begin to figure out what's going on. It's also full of awesome.
